Claude Renard. Star and shards.

Claude Renard has left an indelible mark on Belgian comic book history. Yet he is not so well known to the general public. He was an illustrator, sculptor, graphic designer, designer, scenographer and set and costume designer for theatre, but above all he was the extraordinary inspirer of the Atelier R in St-Luc Brussels. There, in the 1970s, he trained an exceptional generation of comic book creators, whom he introduced to the world in the legendary magazine Le 9è Rêve.

Six years after his death, his son Romain, together with Thierry Bellefroid, is reviving the worlds of this aesthete, whose whole life was a work of art. From his bustling studio that he transformed into a cabinet of curiosities to the furniture of his home, from the graphic design of his covers to the posters for his shows, from futuristic comics to history books, from his mineral sculptures to his fascination with Galileo, from his multifarious collections to his countless tools, Claude Renard is elusive. Like the exhibition showcasing his work, he is both whole and fragmented.

Claude Renard, disparu en 2019, a laissé une trace indélébile dans l’histoire de la bande dessinée belge. Il est pourtant peu connu du grand public. Dessinateur, sculpteur, graphiste, designer, scénographe, créateur de décors et de costumes pour la scène, il est avant tout celui qui a formé une génération exceptionnelle à la bande dessinée, dans les années 70, au sein de l’Atelier R, à St-Luc Bruxelles, les révélant au travers d’une revue devenue mythique : Le 9è Rêve.

Six ans après sa disparition, son fils Romain s’associe à Thierry Bellefroid pour faire revivre les mondes de cet esthète dont la vie était une œuvre d’art. De son foisonnant atelier transformé en cabinet de curiosités au mobilier de sa maison, du graphisme de ses couvertures aux affiches de spectacles, de la bande dessinée futuriste aux livres d’histoire, de ses sculptures minérales à sa fascination pour Galilée, de ses collections en tout genre à ses outils innombrables, Claude Renard est irrésumable. Comme l’exposition qui présente son travail, il est à la fois entier et fragmenté.

Avec la contribution des anciens élèves de l’Atelier R publiés dans Le 9èRêve, parmi lesquels François Schuiten, Andréas, Sokal, Berthet, Chantal De Spiegeleer, Séraphine, Foerster, Alain Goffin, Anne Baltus et bien d’autres.

Claude Renard heeft een onuitwisbare stempel gedrukt op de Belgische stripgeschiedenis. Toch is hij niet zo bekend bij het grote publiek. Hij was tekenaar, beeldhouwer, grafisch ontwerper, designer, scenograaf en decor- en kostuumontwerper voor toneel, maar bovenal was hij de bijzondere bezieler van het Atelier R in St-Luc Brussel. Daar leidde hij in de jaren ‘70 een uitzonderlijke generatie stripmakers op, die hij aan de wereld voorstelde in het legendarisch geworden tijdschrift Le 9è Rêve.

Zes jaar na zijn overlijden brengt zijn zoon Romain samen met Thierry Bellefroid de werelden van deze estheet, wiens hele leven een kunstwerk was, opnieuw tot leven. Van zijn bruisende studio die hij omtoverde tot een rariteitenkabinet tot het meubilair van zijn huis, van de grafische vormgeving van zijn covers tot de affiches voor zijn shows, van futuristische stripverhalen tot geschiedenisboeken, van zijn minerale sculpturen tot zijn fascinatie voor Galileo, van zijn veelsoortige verzamelingen tot zijn ontelbare werktuigen, Claude Renard is ongrijpbaar. Net als de tentoonstelling die zijn werk toont, is hij zowel heel als gefragmenteerd.
