BelgianArtPrize 2025: Suchan Kinoshita

Suchan Kinoshita received the BelgianArtPrize 2025 and is invited to create and present new work at the Centre for Fine Arts Brussels / Bozar.
Suchan Kinoshita (Tokyo, 1960) lives and works in Brussels. She studied rhythmics and later contemporary music theatre at the music academy in Cologne from 1981 onwards. 
Kinoshita’s works deal with combinations of several disciplines. Throughout her oeuvre, one can find elements from theatre and experimental music, two fields in which she was active for some time. Duration (time) and a conscious approach regarding the position of the viewer are two important aspects in her work. No themes, rather an interest in reading between the lines would describe her engagement. Kinoshita considers her work as a space where different works interact with each other but also with the viewer. How these different roles are taken by different players within a specific spatial condition is something she continues exploring. Her work was shown in several international exhibitions.

Suchan Kinoshita (Tokyo, 1960) vit et travaille à Bruxelles. À partir de 1981, elle étudie la rythmique puis le théâtre musical contemporain à l'académie de musique de Cologne.
Les œuvres de Kinoshita combinent plusieurs disciplines. Dans l'ensemble de son œuvre, on trouve des éléments de théâtre et de musique expérimentale, deux domaines dans lesquels elle a été active pendant un certain temps. La durée (le temps) et l'approche consciente de la position du spectateur sont deux aspects importants de son travail. Son engagement ne s’articule pas autour de thèmes spécifiques, mais invite plutôt le spectateur à une ‘lecture entre les lignes’. Kinoshita considère son travail comme un espace où différentes œuvres interagissent entre elles, mais aussi avec le spectateur. Cette interaction des différents rôles joués par différents acteurs dans un espace spécifique est une constante dans son travail. Son travail a été présenté dans plusieurs expositions internationales.

Suchan Kinoshita (Tokio, 1960) woont en werkt in Brussel. Ze studeerde ritmiek en later hedendaags muziektheater aan de muziekacademie in Keulen.
In haar hele oeuvre zijn elementen terug te vinden uit theater en experimentele muziek, twee vakgebieden waarin ze geruime tijd actief was. Duur (tijd) en de bewuste benadering van de positie van de toeschouwer zijn twee belangrijke aspecten in haar werk. Geen thema's, eerder een interesse om tussen de regels door te lezen beschrijft haar engagement. Kinoshita beschouwt haar werk als een ruimte waarin verschillende werken met elkaar en met de kijker interageren. Deze verschillende rollen die worden ingenomen door verschillende spelers binnen een specifieke ruimtelijke conditie is iets waar ze mee blijft werken.
