Conflicted Embodiment

Together with 15 participants, caterina daniela mora jara delves into her essay Conflicted Embodiment. Notes from Dancing on Both Sides of the Atlantic, published in September 2023. What do 'folklore', 'popular' and 'academic' mean within the different dance contexts of the global North and South? What mother tongues inhabit dance and performance? And what role can translation play? Embracing the complexity of the untranslatable, it explores how 'conflicted embodiment' can be a research tool for how a body navigates through migration, colonialism and dance.From 2021 to 2023, caterina daniela mora jara was one of workspacebrussels' resident artists. Her trajectory culminated in a publication that inspired this reading group. At home in both academic and folkloric dance, caterina's work questions dominant ways of producing work and the colonial legacy in the representation of Western dance. She is currently a doctoral student at Uniarts / Stockholm University of the Arts.

Avec un petit groupe de participant·es, caterina daniela mora jara s’immerge dans son essai Conflicted Embodiment. Notes from Dancing on Both Sides of the Atlantic (Incarnation conflictuelle. Notes prises en dansant des deux côtés de l’Atlantique), publié en septembre 2023. Que signifient « folklore », « populaire » et « académique » dans des contextes de danse différents, au Nord et au Sud ? Quelles langues maternelles habitent la danse et le spectacle ? En embrassant la complexité de l’intraduisible, elle explore de quelle manière « l’incarnation conflictuelle » peut être un outil de recherche sur la façon dont un corps navigue à travers la migration, le colonialisme et la danse.• De 2021 à 2023, caterina daniela mora jara était l’une des artistes en résidence à workspacebrussels. Son parcours a abouti à une publication qui a inspiré ce groupe de lecture. Aussi à l’aise dans la danse académique que folklorique, son œuvre interroge les modes de production dominants de créations artistiques et l’héritage colonial dans la représentation de la danse occidentale. Elle est actuellement doctorante à Uniarts/Stockholm University of the Arts. Elle n’a pas de compte Instagram et n’est jamais entrée dans un magasin IKEA.

Wat betekenen ‘folklore’, ‘populair’ en ‘academisch’ binnen de verschillende danscontexten van het globale noorden en zuiden? Welke moedertalen huizen in dans en performance? En welke rol kan vertaling spelen? Door de complexiteit van het onvertaalbare te omarmen, wordt onderzocht hoe ‘conflicted embodiment’ een onderzoekstool kan zijn voor de vraag hoe een lichaam doorheen migratie, kolonialisme en dans navigeert. Van 2021 tot 2023 was caterina daniela mora jara een van de vaste huiskunstenaars van workspacebrussels. Haar traject werd afgerond met een publicatie die de inspiratie vormt voor deze leesgroep. Thuis in zowel academische als folkloristische dans, bevraagt caterina in haar werk de dominante manieren van werk produceren en de koloniale erfenis in de representatie van westerse dans. Ze doctoreert momenteel aan Uniarts / Stockholm University of the Arts.
