Italy, the late 1990s. Olga, a 40-year-old woman with two children, is a devoted mother and wife. She does her best to lead a life in perfect harmony with what society imposes on her. One day, her husband leaves her for a young woman. As in the most pathetic soap opera. Her whole world collapses. In the grip of a permanent feeling of danger, Olga sinks into a state of rage. She becomes vulgar, violent, grotesque.

After she has removed her make-up and given up appearances, an unexpected woman emerges. Scandalous and powerful. Almost mythical, she steps forward in all her tragedy: a contemporary Medea, who no longer needs to kill to exist.

In this adaptation of Elena Ferrante’s book, actress and director Gaia Saitta plays this woman, accompanied by her children and her dog. Trading her oppressed body for a resistant one, she lets herself go, finally liberated. 

Everything has to be rebuilt, starting with language. The audience, scattered on and off the stage, is both part of and witness to this transformation.

Dans l’Italie de la fin des années 1990, Olga, 40 ans et deux enfants, est une mère et une épouse dévouée. Elle tente de mener une vie en parfaite adéquation avec ce que la société lui impose. Un beau jour, son mari la quitte pour une jeune fille. Comme dans le plus pathétique des feuilletons. Et tout son univers s’écroule. En proie à un sentiment de danger permanent, Olga sombre alors dans un état de rage, elle devient vulgaire, violente, grotesque.

Une fois le maquillage retiré et les apparences dissipées, c’est une femme inattendue qui prend place. Scandaleuse et puissante. Presque mythique, elle apparaît dans toute sa tragédie : une Médée contemporaine, qui n’a plus besoin de tuer pour exister.

Dans cette adaptation du livre d’Elena Ferrante, l’actrice et metteuse en scène Gaia Saitta (dont Je crois que dehors c’est le printemps a marqué les esprits) incarne cette femme, accompagnée de ses enfants et de son chien. Délaissant un corps opprimé pour un corps résistant, elle s’abandonne, enfin libérée. 

Tout est à reconstruire, à commencer par les mots. Le public, dispersé sur le plateau et en dehors, est à la fois partie et témoin de cette transformation.

In het Italië van het einde van de jaren 1990 is Olga met haar 40 jaar en twee kinderen een toegewijde moeder en echtgenote. Ze probeert een leven te leiden dat perfect past bij wat de maatschappij haar oplegt. Op een dag verlaat haar man haar voor een jong meisje. Zoals in de meest pathetische soapseries. En haar hele wereld stort in. Ze valt ten prooi aan een gevoel van permanente dreiging en glijdt af naar een staat van woede. Ze wordt vulgair, gewelddadig, grotesk.

Als de make-up is verwijderd en de schijn is opgeheven, neemt een onverwachte vrouw haar plaats in. Schandalig en machtig, haast mythisch verschijnt ze in al haar tragiek: een hedendaagse Medea, die niet meer hoeft te doden om te bestaan.

In deze bewerking van het boek van Elena Ferrante speelt actrice en regisseuse Gaia Saitta deze vrouw, vergezeld door haar kinderen en haar hond. Ze wisselt haar onderdrukte lichaam in voor een weerbaar lichaam, en laat zich gaan, eindelijk bevrijd. 

Alles moet opnieuw worden opgebouwd, te beginnen met de woorden. Het publiek, verspreid over en naast de scène, is zowel deel als getuige van deze transformatie.
