Dichterliebe

When 18-year-old Robert Schumann met the great poet Heinrich Heine, he had expected a bitter misanthrope. Nothing could have been further from the truth: before him stood a friendly man ‘with an ironic smile on his lips’. That same irony surfaces in Heine’s poetry collection Lyrisches Intermezzo, in which a sombre, versifying knight locks himself up in his room as he pines for a lost love. With a sense of drama, he decides to place his ‘angry old songs’ in a coffin. Carried by giants (the coffin weighing a ton), he lets his great sorrow sink to the bottom of the sea. In the space of a few days, the newly-wed Schumann spun sixteen of Heine’s poems into a lied cycle about the opposing forces of love. Dichterliebe depicts all the romantic clichés with equal eagerness, from the initial butterflies to the bitter pill of rejection. The song cycle was an ode to two women: Schumann’s wife Clara, whose music resonates at the beginning, and soprano Wilhelmine Schröder-Devrient, for whom the composer intended his songs. Today, internationally renowned soprano Elsa Dreisig follows in their footsteps to immerse listeners in the Sehnsucht of German Romanticism with pianist Romain Louveau. 

After the interval, the duo will take you across the Rhine to the Paris of the late 19th century. They will plunge you into the delicate, intimate world of Gabriel Fauré and his friend Rita Strohl.

Lorsqu’il fait la connaissance du grand poète Heinrich Heine, Robert Schumann, alors âgé de dix-huit ans, s’attend à rencontrer un misanthrope rongé par l’amertume. Rien n’est moins vrai : devant lui se tient un homme jovial, « avec sur les lèvres un sourire ironique ». C’est cette même ironie que l’on retrouve dans Lyrisches Intermezzo, un recueil en vers dans lequel un sombre chevalier féru de poésie se cloître dans sa chambre pour ruminer ses amours perdues. Il décide, non sans un certain sens du drame, de remiser ses « chants d’amour, tourment de [son] âme » au fond d’un cercueil, avant de charger douze géants (c’est que le cercueil fait son poids !) de jeter le tout à la mer. Quelques jours suffiront à Schumann, marié de frais, pour tirer des seize poèmes de Heine un cycle de chansons qui traduit toute la versatilité du sentiment amoureux. Dichterliebe égrène avec un égal empressement tous les clichés propres au romantisme, des premiers émois printaniers à la pilule amère du refus. L’œuvre est une ode à deux femmes : Clara, l’épouse du compositeur, dont la musique résonne dans le premier chant, et Wilhelmine Schröder-Devrient, la soprano à qui Schumann destinait ses chansons. C’est aujourd’hui au tour d’Elsa Dreisig, soprano de renommée internationale, de marcher sur les traces de ces femmes en compagnie du pianiste Romain Louveau pour plonger l’auditeur dans cette Sehnsucht si chère aux romantiques allemands. 

Après l’entracte, le duo vous fait traverser le Rhin et voyager dans le temps jusqu’au Paris artistique de la fin du XIXe siècle. Il vous plonge dans l’univers du mouvement impressionniste, avec des œuvres délicates et intimistes de Gabriel Fauré, ainsi que de son amie Rita Strohl.

Toen de achttienjarige Robert Schumann de grote dichter Heinrich Heine ontmoette, had hij zich aan een bittere misantroop verwacht. Niets was minder waar: voor hem stond een vriendelijke man “met een ironisch lachje om de mond”. Diezelfde ironie is te bespeuren in Heines poëziebundel Lyrisches Intermezzo, waarin een sombere, dichtende ridder zich opsluit in zijn kamertje, malend om een verloren liefde. Met gevoel voor drama besluit hij om zijn “boze oude liederen” op te bergen in een doodskist. Gedragen door reuzen (de kist is immers loodzwaar) laat hij zijn grote verdriet zinken naar de bodem van de zee. Op enkele dagen tijd spon de pasgetrouwde Schumann zestien van Heines gedichten tot een liedcyclus over de tegengestelde krachten van de liefde. Dichterliebe verklankt alle romantische clichés even gretig, van ontluikende lentekriebels tot de bittere pil van de afwijzing. De liedcyclus werd een ode aan twee vrouwen: Schumanns echtgenote Clara, wier muziek aan het begin doorklinkt, en de sopraan Wilhelmine Schröder-Devrient, voor wie de componist zijn liederen bestemde. Vandaag treedt de internationaal gerenommeerde sopraan Elsa Dreisig in hun voetsporen om samen met pianist Romain Louveau de luisteraar onder te dompelen in de sehnsucht van de Duitse romantiek. 

Na de pauze nemen ze je mee over de Rijn naar het Parijs van de late 19de eeuw. Ze dompelen je er onder in de delicatie, intimistische liederen van Gabriel Fauré en zijn artistieke vriendin Rita Strohl.
