Film theorist and filmmaker Laura Mulvey is the big guest of this programme parallel to the exhibition on Chantal Akerman. She is one of the most important theorist of the theory of the gaze and, more particularly, the 'male gaze'. The theories of Mulvey had a great influence on Akerman. For the book 'Chantal Akerman Retrospective Handbook', Mulvey wrote the foreword, where she underlines the effects of Akerman's cinema on the film community.
On 11 May, Laura Mulvey will give a speech on Chantal Akerman, on her influence in cinema from theory till filmmaking practice. After the speech, she will have a conversation with Daniella Shreir, member of selection committee of the Quinzaine des Realisateurs and co-founder of Another Gaze magazine, before launching the screening of Frida Kahlo & Tina Modotti by Laura Mulvey and Peter Wollen.

This tautly structured documentary sheds light on the work of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo and Italian photographer Tina Modotti, women icons of the Mexican Renaissance. The film not only explores the two women's artworks, but also includes rare footage of Modotti in the 1920 Hollywood film The Tiger's Coat and offers some exquisite home movie shots of Frida Kahlo and Mexican muralist Diego Rivera at their Blue House in Mexico City.

La théoricienne du cinéma et réalisatrice Laura Mulvey est la grande invitée de ce programme organisé en parallèle à l’exposition sur Chantal Akerman. Elle est l’une des plus importantes théoriciennes de la théorie du regard, plus particulièrement, du « male gaze » (regard masculin). Les théories de Mulvey ont eu une grande influence sur Akerman. Pour le livre « Chantal Akerman Retrospective Handbook », Mulvey a écrit l’avant-propos, dans lequel elle souligne l’influence du cinéma d’Akerman sur la communauté cinématographique.
Le 11 mai, Laura Mulvey prononcera un discours sur Chantal Akerman, sur son influence dans le cinéma, de la théorie à la pratique cinématographique. Après ce discours, elle s’entretiendra avec Daniella Shreir, membre du comité de sélection de la Quinzaine des Réalisateurs et cofondatrice du magazine Another Gaze, avant de lancer la projection de Frida Kahlo & Tina Modotti de Laura Mulvey et Peter Wollen.

Ce documentaire méticuleusement structuré met en lumière le travail de la peintre mexicaine Frida Kahlo et de la photographe italienne Tina Modotti, deux femmes emblématiques de la Renaissance mexicaine. Le film n’explore pas seulement les œuvres d’art des deux femmes, mais inclus également des images rares de Modotti dans le film hollywoodien de 1920 The Tiger’s Coat, ainsi que de superbes images personnelles de Frida Kahlo et du peintre muraliste mexicain Diego Rivera dans leur maison bleue à Mexico.

Filmtheoretica en cineaste Laura Mulvey is de hoofdgast van dit programma parallel aan de tentoonstelling over Chantal Akerman. Ze is een van de belangrijkste denkers binnen de theorie van de blik, en meer in het bijzonder de ‘mannelijke blik’. De theorieën van Mulvey vonden veel weerklank bij Akerman. In haar voorwoord op het boek ‘Chantal Akerman Retrospective Handbook’ benadrukt Mulvey de invloed van Akermans werk op de filmgemeenschap als geheel.
Op 11 mei geeft Laura Mulvey een lezing over Chantal Akerman en over haar invloed op de filmwereld – van theorie tot praktijk. Na de lezing gaat ze in gesprek met Daniella Shreir, lid van de selectiecommissie van de Quinzaine des Réalisateurs en
medeoprichtster van het tijdschrift Another Gaze. De vertoning van Frida Kahlo & Tina Modotti van Laura Mulvey en Peter Wollen vormt de afsluiter.

Deze strak gestructureerde documentaire belicht het werk van de Mexicaanse schilderes Frida Kahlo en de Italiaanse fotografe Tina Modotti, vrouwelijke iconen van de Mexicaanse Renaissance. De film verkent niet alleen de kunstwerken van de twee vrouwen, maar bevat ook zeldzame beelden van Modotti in de Hollywoodfilm The Tiger's Coat uit 1920. Daarnaast passeren een aantal prachtige zelfgemaakte opnames van Frida Kahlo en de Mexicaanse muurschilder Diego Rivera in Casa Azul (het Blauwe Huis) in Mexico-Stad de revue.

It is just before Christmas, a few weeks before the elections and the people struggle to access electric light. Kudi mobilises the residents of his Kisenso neighbourhood to collect money for a new power cable. On Mount Mangengenge, a holy place overlooking the city, Pastor Gédéon delivers a sermon about the light of Christ as the path to life and truth. After his house is flooded by the Congo River, Davido searches for a place to stay. He kills time with other young men, working out and dreaming of a better future. Nelson Makengo is a Congolese director and visual artist oscillating between contemporary art and cinema. With Tongo Saa (Rising up at night), he signs a masterpiece of moving images and poetical narration. It is presented in the space and darkness of Les Brigittines' ancient chapel, in an immersive form of expanded cinema specially designed for the festival. Between hope, disappointment and religious faith, Tongo Saa paints a subtle and fragmented picture of a population that, despite the challenges, is sublimated by the beauty of Kinshasa’s nights. Nelson Makengo is een Congolese regisseur en beeldend kunstenaar die werkt op het snijvlak van hedendaagse kunst en film. Met Tongo Saa (Rising up at night) levert hij een meesterwerk af vol ontroerende beelden en poëzie. Het wordt gepresenteerd in de mysterieuze ruimte van de oude Brigittinenkapel, in een immersieve vorm van expanded cinema speciaal ontworpen voor het festival. Tongo Saa toont ons de schoonheid van Kinshasa’s nachten en brengt een gevoelig en gefragmenteerd portret van een bevolking tussen hoop, teleurstelling en geloof. Over het licht dat blijft branden zelfs wanneer een stad in duisternis is gehuld.

Next Generation, Please! is focused on the moving image this year. Five groups of young people present the films they have been creating together with professionals for a year. Discover the ideas, wishes, and dreams for the future of these young creatives with a fresh perspective on society.  On May 19, we will get to see the results of one year of hard work in the form of 4 screenings and 1 video installation. The theme of the film points to a law still in force in Italy, which prohibits a child who is not recognized at birth from knowing the identity of his or her biological parents, at least not until he or she is 100 years old. This is the element that unites the two protagonists, played by the partly perfect Valerio Lundini and always impeccable Sergio Castellitto (whose performance is enhanced by Andréa Leanza's impressive prosthetic make-up). 2023, VO IT, ST EN, 90' ********** Nederlands ********** De jongeman, die nog een eeuwigheid voor zich heeft, klampt zich vast aan zijn wortels met de frustratie niet te weten van welke boom ze zijn. Dit is het element dat de twee hoofdrolspelers verenigt, gespeeld door de deels perfecte Valerio Lundini en de altijd onberispelijke Sergio Castellitto (wiens optreden wordt versterkt door de indrukwekkende prothetische make-up van Andréa Leanza). 2023, VO IT, ST EN, 90' ********** Français ********** Le jeune homme, qui a une éternité devant lui, s’accroche à ses racines avec la frustration de ne pas savoir à quel arbre elles appartiennent. Le thème, abordé par le film pointe du doigt une loi toujours en vigueur en Italie, qui interdit à un enfant non reconnu à la naissance de connaître l’identité de ses parents biologiques, du moins pas avant ses 100 ans. C’est l’élément qui unit les deux protagonistes, interprété par le parfait en partie Valerio Lundini et toujours impeccable Sergio Castellitto (dont les performances sont enrichies par l’impressionnant maquillage prothétique de Andréa Leanza). 2023, VO IT, ST EN, 90'
