Sequenze - Alexander Vantournhout & Not Standing

With Staging the Concert, Bozar introduces a new format in which visual art and music enter into dialogue. New dimensions of the concert experience are explored through the interplay with space, light and materials.
Between 1958 and 2002, Italian composer Luciano Berio composed 14 groundbreaking Sequenze for solo instruments, in which he radically pushed the boundaries of virtuosity and expression. In each Sequenza, Berio develops a complex musical idea beyond mere technical mastery. Alexander Vantournhout selected five of them - for violin, voice, trombone, accordion and harp - and, together with four performers of Not Standing, created a performance exploring the physical possibilities of Berio's music. During a unique tour through the Palace of Fine Arts, a fascinating dialogue emerges between Horta's iconic architecture, the musicians and the performers' acrobatic movements. Music, space and movement merge perfectly.

Avec Staging the Concert, nous proposons un nouveau format où les arts visuels et la musique, entrent en dialogue. En jouant avec l'espace, la lumière et les matériaux de nouvelles dimensions dans l'expérience du concert sont explorées.
Entre 1958 et 2002, le compositeur italien Luciano Berio a composé quatorze Sequenze révolutionnaires pour instruments solos, dans lesquelles il repousse radicalement les limites de la virtuosité et de l'expression. Dans chaque Sequenza, Lucinao Berio développe une idée musicale complexe qui va au-delà de la maîtrise technique. Alexander Vantournhout en a sélectionné cinq — pour violon, voix, trombone, accordéon et harpe — et, avec quatre interprètes de Not Standing, a créé un spectacle explorant les possibilités physiques de la musique de Berio. Lors d’une visite unique à travers le Palais des Beaux-Arts, un dialogue fascinant se crée entre l'architecture iconique de Horta, les musiciens et les mouvements acrobatiques des performeurs. Musique, espace et mouvement fusionnent harmonieusement.

Met Staging the Concert introduceren we een nieuw format waarin beeldende kunst en muziek met elkaar in dialoog treden. Nieuwe dimensies van de concertbeleving worden verkend door het spel met ruimte, licht en materialen.
Tussen 1958 en 2002 componeert de Italiaanse componist Luciano Berio veertien baanbrekende Sequenze voor solo-instrumenten, waarin hij de grenzen van virtuositeit en expressie radicaal verlegt. In elke Sequenza ontwikkelt Berio een complex muzikaal idee dat verder reikt dan louter technische beheersing. Alexander Vantournhout selecteerde er vijf — voor viool, stem, trombone, accordeon en harp — en creëert samen met vier performers van Not Standing een voorstelling waarin de fysieke mogelijkheden van Berio’s muziek worden onderzocht. Tijdens een unieke rondgang door het Paleis ontstaat een fascinerende dialoog tussen de iconische architectuur van Horta, de muzikanten en de acrobatische bewegingen van de performers. Muziek, ruimte en beweging smelten naadloos in elkaar over.
