Motherbaby

‘Everyone relates to a mother’, thinks theatre duo Marieke&Sophia. Together with actress and theatre-maker Kristien de Proost, they explore the mother-daughter relationship. As (young) women who will (or will not) one day become mothers, they discover their own expectations and fears around motherhood.   Through popular culture, they expose the brutal clichés surrounding the mother figure: From the Holy Mother-Madonna, through the evil stepmother to the maneater. What are we trying to hide when we burden the mother figure with our expectations of unconditional love? And why does she become the scapegoat when society fails?  The result of their research is Motherbaby, a ‘DIY musical’, in which the actors sing about the relationship between mother and child in all its contradictory facets. Accompanied by pianist and musician Alan van Rompuy, they intermix homemade songs - a kind of new lullaby or folk tale - with spoken text. Oscillating between suffocating love and tender aggression, they aim to break free from the constraints of these (societal) roles. In just a handful of sentences, the trio exposes the oppressive dynamics and destructive dependency between mothers and daughters. — Charlotte De Somviele, Etcetera   • The leitmotif throughout the work of Marieke&Sophia is a fascination with the (female) body and the imagination and meaning ascribed to it. They go looking for the cultural scripts that mould and discipline our bodies, and the possible opposition within those scripts. They previously created Guilty of Love, a piece about the imagination of the raped body and the clichés about it. In Motherbaby, Kristien De Proost joins them on the stage. She is a theatre-maker and actress, who has worked at, among other venues, Bronks, Het Toneelhuis, and Victoria, and was part of the artistic heart of Tristero from 2004 to 2017. She is currently focusing on writing, solo work, and encounters with new artists.

« Tout le monde a un lien avec une mère », pense le duo de théâtre Marieke&Sophia. Avec l'actrice et metteuse en scène Kristien de Proost, elles explorent la relation mère-fille. En tant que (jeunes) femmes qui deviendront (ou non) un jour mères, elles découvrent leurs propres attentes et craintes vis-à-vis de la maternité.A travers la culture populaire, elles exposent les clichés brutaux qui entourent la figure maternelle : De la Sainte Vierge à la croqueuse d'hommes, en passant par la méchante marâtre. Qu'essayons-nous de cacher lorsque nous chargeons la figure maternelle de nos attentes en matière d'amour inconditionnel ? Et pourquoi devient-elle le bouc émissaire lorsque la société échoue ?  Le résultat de leurs recherches est Motherbaby, une « comédie musicale bricolée », dans laquelle les acteurs chantent la relation entre la mère et l'enfant dans toutes ses facettes contradictoires. Accompagnées par le pianiste et musicien Alan van Rompuy, elles mélangent des chansons faites maison - de sortes de nouvelles berceuses ou de contes populaires - avec des textes parlés. Oscillant entre amour étouffant et tendre agression, elles cherchent à se libérer des contraintes de ces rôles (sociétaux). En une poignée de phrases, le trio expose la dynamique oppressive et la dépendance destructrice entre mères et filles. — Charlotte De Somviele, etcetera • Le leitmotiv du travail de Marieke&Sophia est la fascination pour le corps (féminin), l'imagination et la signification qui lui sont attribuées. Elles explorent les scripts culturels qui façonnent et disciplinent nos corps, ainsi que la résistance possible à ces scénarios. Elles ont créé Guilty of Love, sur l'imagination du corps violé et les clichés qui s'y rapportent. Dans Motherbaby, Kristien De Proost les rejoint également sur scène. Metteuse en scène de théâtre et actrice, elle a travaillé avec Bronks, Het Toneelhuis et Victoria, entre autres, et a fait partie du noyau artistique de Tristero de 2004 à 2017. Aujourd’hui, elle se consacre notamment à l'écriture, au travail en solo et aux rencontres avec de nouveaux·elles artistes.

‘Iedereen heeft een verhouding met een moeder’, denkt het theaterduo Marieke&Sophia. Samen met actrice en theatermaakster Kristien de Proost onderzoeken ze de moeder-dochter relatie. Als (jonge) vrouwen die (n)ooit moeder zullen worden, ontdekken ze hun eigen verwachtingen en angsten rondom moederschap.  Via de populaire cultuur leggen ze de brute clichés rond de moederfiguur bloot: Van de Heilige Moeder-Madonna, over de boze stiefmoeder tot de mannenverslindster. Wat proberen we te verbergen als we de moederfiguur belasten met onze verwachtingen van onvoorwaardelijke liefde? En waarom wordt zij de zondebok wanneer de samenleving faalt? Het resultaat van hun onderzoek is Motherbaby, een ‘gebricoleerde musical’, waarin de spelers de relatie tussen moeder en kind in al haar tegenstrijdige facetten bezingen. Onder begeleiding van pianist en muzikant Alan van Rompuy wisselen ze zelfgemaakte liedjes - een soort nieuwe slaapliederen of volksvertellingen - af met gesproken tekst. Schommelend tussen verstikkende liefde en tedere agressie willen ze loskomen van de beperkingen van deze (maatschappelijke) rollen. Met slechts een handvol zinnen legt het trio de beklemmende dynamiek en destructieve afhankelijkheid tussen moeders en dochters bloot. — Charlotte De Somviele, etcetera  • Het leidmotief doorheen het werk van Marieke&Sophia is de fascinatie voor het (vrouwelijke) lichaam en de verbeelding en betekenis die daaraan worden toegeschreven. Ze gaan op zoek naar de culturele scripts die ons lichaam kneden en disciplineren, en het mogelijke verzet binnen die scripts. Eerder creëerden ze al Guilty of Love, over de verbeelding van het verkrachte lichaam en de clichés daarover. In Motherbaby komt ook Kristien De Proost mee op het podium. Ze is theatermaker en actrice, werkte onder meer bij Bronks, Het Toneelhuis en Victoria en maakt van 2004 tot 2017 deel uit van de artistieke kern van Tristero. Vandaag richt ze zich onder meer op schrijven, solo-werk en ontmoetingen met nieuwe kunstenaars.
