What a person needs in 2024, according to singer-pianist An Pierlé? "Less regret. Less fake. Less fear. And the courage to live in the now." She sings about it all with the wisdom of a woman who no longer has to be a girl. Four years after Wiga Waga, the An Pierlé Quartet (APQ) is back with Ultimate Survival, its second album already on the prestigious W.E.R.F. records. Compared to the APQ debut, the grooves are deeper and the lyrics more confronting. That has in part to do with the turn that Pierlé’s life took. The illness with a capital C was warded off and the realisation that you can best enjoy your days while you have them has been all the more urgent since. Pierlé doesn’t let something so dark dominate the new album though: the title doesn’t refer to that period, but was given to her as a gift by artist Patrick Van Caeckenbergh, who designed the cover. Pierlé: “He drew his inspiration from an old book about animals that take care of other animal species. We all need some of that these days.” Ultimate Survival is an experiential album that takes you along on the undulations of a tale. First single The Sting immediately sets the tone. The song is about accepting the stupid things people do, even though they know better. The album celebrates the liberation of being able to start again with a clean slate, alternating husky warmth with the virtuoso outbursts of a seasoned voice. This is not classical jazz, but it is the work of a bona fide jazz band. With keyboard player Hendrik Lasure and drummer Casper Van De Velde (together: Schntzl), APQ pretty much has the core of ‘The New Wave of Belgian Jazz’ in its ranks. The godfather of that jazz wave is producer/reed-blower Koen Gisen. "Casper and Hendrik are international class acts ", says Gisen. "The great thing is: they almost never play the same thing twice, not even in the studio. Live, this will be a wonderful derailment. In the knowledge that, thanks to these two, they will always land on their feet." Pierlé: "Our boys also have old souls. And that is exactly why they’re our mentors, instead of the other way around. So we can opt for adventure. And to live in the now."

Quatre ans après Wiga Waga, le groupe An Pierlé Quartet (APQ) revient avec Ultimate Survival, son second opus sur le prestigieux label W.E.R.F. records.Au regard du précédent album, les grooves ont gagné en profondeur et les textes en impact. C’est dû en partie au tournant pris par la vie de la pianiste. La traversée de la maladie au grand C lui rappela l’urgence du carpe diem. Mais elle ne voulait pas que la noirceur du mal domine l’album : le titre ne renvoie pas à cette période. C’est un cadeau de l’artiste Patrick Van Caeckenbergh, créateur de la pochette. Pierlé : “Il l’a puisé dans un vieux livre sur des animaux qui prennent soin d’autres espèces animales. C’est ce dont nous avons tous besoin aujourd’hui.”Ultimate Survival est plus qu’un album. C’est une expérience qui vous embarque sur les vagues d’un récit. Le premier single “The Sting” donne d’emblée le ton : il porte sur l’acceptation de nos bêtises commises au mépris du bon sens. Quant à l’album, il célèbre la libération. De sa voix marquée par la vie, entre chaleur rauque et envolées virtuoses, Pierlé chante le soulagement de pouvoir repartir de zéro. Le bol d’air de la table rase. Ceci n’est pas du jazz classique, c’est l’œuvre d’un jazz band à part entière. D’ailleurs, avec dans ses rangs le claviériste Hendrik Lasure et le batteur Casper Van De Velde (l’une et l’autre moitié de Schntzl), APQ abrite le noyau dur de la New Wave of Belgian Jazz.“Casper et Hendrik sont des artistes de calibre international”, note le producteur et multi-instrumentiste Koen Gisen, parrain de cette nouvelle vague du jazz. “Ce qui est merveilleux, c’est qu’ils ne font jamais deux fois la même chose, même pas en studio. Sur scène, ça part formidablement en vrille – mais on peut compter sur eux pour tout mener à bon port.” Pierlé : “Nos garçons sont de vieilles âmes. C’est pourquoi ce sont eux, nos mentors, et non l’inverse. Ils nous apprennent à choisir l’aventure. Et à vivre l’instant présent.”

Vier jaar na Wiga Waga is het An Pierlé Quartet (APQ) terug met Ultimate Survival, het tweede album al op het prestigieuze W.E.R.F. records.In vergelijking met het debuut van het APQ zijn de grooves dieper en de teksten confronterender. Dat heeft deels te maken met de bocht die Pierlé’s leven nam. De ziekte met de grote K werd bezworen en het besef dat je maar beter van de dag kunt genieten is sindsdien des te urgenter. Maar Pierlé laat niet toe dat zoiets donkers het nieuwe album zou domineren: de titel verwijst niet naar die periode, maar werd haar cadeau gedaan door kunstenaar Patrick Van Caeckenbergh, die de hoes ontwierp. Pierlé: “Hij haalde zijn inspiratie uit een oud boek over dieren die voor andere diersoorten zorgen. Daar hebben we vandaag allemaal behoefte aan.”Ultimate Survival is een ervaringsplaat die je meeneemt op de golven van een vertelling. De eerste single The Sting zet meteen de toon. "Casper en Hendrik zijn internationale klasse", vertelt Gisen. "Het prachtige is: ze spelen nooit twee keer hetzelfde, ook niet in de studio. Live wordt dit een wonderlijke ontsporing, in de wetenschap dat het dankzij die twee altijd op zijn poten terechtkomt." Pierlé: "Onze jongens zijn ook oud van ziel. En precies daardoor zijn zij onze mentoren, in plaats van omgekeerd. Om te kiezen voor het avontuur. En te leven in het nú."
