Mahler’s Blumine started out as a work for the theatre before becoming a movement in his First Symphony and, ultimately, a piece in its own right in which the trumpet really comes into its own. A passionately lyrical dialogue emerges with the other wind instruments in this symphonic serenade. The Norwegian trumpet player Tine Thing Helseth revels as much in Blumine as in Doom Painting, newly composed by Nico Muhly. The American composer is supported by a counterpart who was far ahead of his time, Hector Berlioz. In the adventure for the ears that is his Symphonie Fantastique, he revolutionises orchestration, introduces new playing techniques and uses an idée fixe to portray the tortured artist’s beloved in sound. And he did it all in 1830, just six years after Beethoven’s Ninth!

La genèse de Blumine de Mahler passe par plusieurs étapes : d’une pièce théâtrale à un mouvement de sa Première Symphonie puis à une œuvre à part entière dans laquelle la trompette s'épanouit pleinement. Avec un lyrisme passionné, cette sérénade symphonique crée un dialogue avec les autres instruments à vent. Outre Blumine, la trompettiste norvégienne Tine Thing Helseth interprète Doom Painting de Nico Muhly, une œuvre écrite spécialement pour elle. Le compositeur américain est accompagné par un collègue en avance sur son temps : Hector Berlioz. Dans sa Symphonie fantastique, véritable aventure auditive, l'artiste tourmenté révolutionne l'orchestration, introduit de nouvelles techniques de jeu et déploie une idée fixe pour symboliser sa bien-aimée. Tout cela en 1830, six ans seulement après la Neuvième de Beethoven !

De ontstaansgeschiedenis van Mahlers Blumine gaat van een theaterwerk tot een beweging in zijn Eerste Symfonie en uiteindelijk een zelfstandig werk waarin de trompet helemaal openbloeit. Met passionele lyriek ontstaat er een dialoog met de andere blazers in deze symfonische serenade. De Noorse trompettiste Tine Thing Helseth mag zich niet alleen uitleven in Blumine, maar ook in het nieuw gecomponeerde Doom Painting van Nico Muhly. De Amerikaanse componist wordt geschrankt door een collega die zijn tijd ver vooruit was: Hector Berlioz. In zijn luisteravontuur Symphonie Fantastique revolutioneert hij de orkestratie, introduceert hij nieuwe speeltechnieken en zet hij een idée fixe in om de geliefde van de gekwelde artiest te verklanken. Dat allemaal in 1830, slechts zes jaar na Beethovens Negende!
