A long poem to the mountains, Let us Flow is a two-part feature that explores
the isolated mountainous region of Tusheti, in North-east Georgia. It considers
the importance of ritual, the maintenance of community ties, and how
modernisation and migration are transforming rural landscapes. Shot over several
years, Let us Flow uses innovative audio-visual techniques to make visible the
symbolic and physical division of sacred spaces within the community and offers
a nuanced perspective on a culture where ancestral shrines are only accessible
to men.
Medoidze is interested in linguistic parallels between Tushetian dialect and
filmmaking jargon, between ‘hunting’ and ‘shooting’: Tushetians believe that odd
years are governed by Goddess Dali, the protector of wild animals, and even
years are St George’s years. Let us Flow follows this structure as its two parts
are shot in 2021 and 2022 respectively.

Xitana (ხითანა), 6min HD color, sound, 2019, with English subtitles
The first film in Medoidze’s Tusheti Trilogy, Xitana is centred around a
bareback horse race tradition in Tusheti mountains – a display of masculinity as
much as of the fragility of the community trying to maintain its cultural
integrity. Nowhere else is this conflict of desires more pronounced than during
Atengenoba, the region’s traditional summer festivities, with young Tushetians
looking increasingly more like the teenagers anywhere else, ditching their
traditional dress for Norm-core.

Sophio Medoidze’s (b. Tbilisi, Georgia, lives and works in London) practice
encompasses film, photography, writing and sculpture and explores the poetic
potential of uncertainty. For a time she worked anonymously as part of the Clara
Emigrand collective, disseminating her work outside the gallery context. The
desire for a community (both actual and imaginary) drives her narrative work, as
she questions the interplay of rural and urban, languages and translations, as
well as gender politics and dynamics. Her works often emerge from writing and
unfold as installations incorporating moving image, sculpture, and text.
Medoidze’s films are known for their use of innovative audio-visual techniques,
they have been screened at the international film festivals including short film
festival Oberhausen and EMAF European Media art festival. Her work has been
shown at Tate Modern, Centre d´art Contemporain de Brétigny, LUX London,
Fondation Vincent van Gogh, Serpentine Gallery, Whitechapel Gallery, amongst
others. A collection of her short stories Bastard Sun will be published by
Distanz and Kona books in 2023. Medoidze’s films are distributed by LUX, London.

Longue ode aux montagnes, Let us Flow est un documentaire en deux parties sur la
région montagneuse isolée de Tusheti, dans le nord-est de la Géorgie. Le film
considère l'importance des rituels, le maintien des liens communautaires et la
façon dont la modernisation et la migration transforment le paysage rural.
Tourné sur plusieurs années, Let us Flow mobilise des techniques audiovisuelles
innovantes pour révéler la division symbolique et physique au sein des espaces
sacrés de la collectivité, et offre une perspective nuancée sur une culture où
les sanctuaires ancestraux ne sont accessibles qu'aux hommes.
Medoidze s'intéresse aux parallèles linguistiques entre le dialecte tushetien et
le jargon cinématographique, entre la « chasse » et la « captation » : dans la
croyance des Tushetiens, les années impaires sont gouvernées par la déesse Dali,
protectrice des animaux sauvages, tandis que les années paires appartiennent à
Saint-Georges. Let us Flow suit cette structure puisque ses deux parties ont été
tournées en 2021 et 2022 respectivement.
Xitana (ხითანა), 6min HD couleur, son, 2019, sous-titrage en anglais
Xitana, premier film de la trilogie Tusheti de Medoidze, s'articule autour de la
tradition des courses de chevaux à cru dans les montagnes de Tusheti, à la fois
démonstration d'une certaine masculinité et des faiblesses d'une communauté qui
tente de préserver son intégrité culturelle. Ces désirs conflictuels ne sont
nulle part plus évidents que lors d’Atengenoba, le festival d'été traditionnel
de la région, où les jeunes Tushetiens, de plus en plus semblables aux
adolescents du monde entier, troquent leurs vêtements traditionnels pour des
tenues Normcore.
La projection sera suivie d'une séance de questions-réponses avec l'artiste.

Sophio Medoidze (Tbilissi, Géorgie, vit et travaille à Londres) combine le
cinéma, la photographie, l'écriture et la sculpture pour explorer le potentiel
poétique de l'incertitude. Elle travaille un temps de manière anonyme en tant
que membre du collectif Clara Emigrand pour diffuser son travail en dehors du
contexte de la galerie. Le désir de communauté (réelle et imaginaire) anime son

Let us Flow, een lange ode aan de bergen, is een tweedelige speelfilm die de
afgelegen Tusheti bergregio in Noordoost-Georgië verkent. De film onderzoekt het
belang van rituelen, het onderhouden van gemeenschapsbanden en hoe modernisering
en migratie het rurale landschap veranderen. Let us Flow werd over meerdere
jaren gefilmd en maakt gebruik van innovatieve audiovisuele technieken om de
symbolische en fysieke verdeling binnen de heilige ruimten van de gemeenschap te
onthullen. Zo biedt het een genuanceerd perspectief op een cultuur waar
voorouderlijke heiligdommen alleen toegankelijk zijn voor mannen.
Medoidze is geïnteresseerd in de taalkundige parallellen tussen het Tushetisch
dialect en filmjargon, tussen 'jagen' en 'schieten': in het Tushetisch geloof
worden de oneven genummerde jaren geregeerd door de godin Dali, beschermer van
wilde dieren, terwijl de even genummerde jaren toebehoren aan Sint Joris. Let us
Flow volgt deze structuur, met twee delen die respectievelijk in 2021 en 2022
werden opgenomen.

traditie van paardenraces zonder zadel in de bergen van Tusheti – zowel een
vertoning van mannelijkheid als van de kwetsbaarheid van een gemeenschap die
haar culturele integriteit probeert te behouden. Nergens anders komt dit
conflict van verlangens duidelijker naar voren dan tijdens Atengenoba, de
traditionele zomerfeesten van de regio, waar jonge Tushetiërs er steeds meer
uitzien als tieners overal ter wereld, en hun traditionele kleding inruilen voor
Normcore.
