Perzen. Triomf van Empathie

One of the focal points of Ben Chika's theatre company Action Zoo Humain is confronting Western cultural heritage with the reality of a pluralistic world. The performers look at the long-running struggle between Israel and Palestine through the lens of the oldest tragedy in the theatrical canon: The Persians by Aeschylus. Did Aeschylus, who himself fought against the Persians, write about the Persians with genuine empathy or did his tragedy actually affirm the superiority of the Greeks? What are the parallels that we can draw between that world and ours?  In this multidisciplinary theatre performance, Ben Chikha challenges the younger generation to sharpen their personal, political and artistic visions on the two main elements of tragedy, empathy and pride. This challenge is given added focus by a polyphonic chorus of Palestinians and Israelis who were interviewed by Ben Chikha when he was in that region in January 2024. Perzen forms the second part of the triptych Trilogie van de Empathie. As in the acclaimed and much-discussed first part Flemish Primitives - performed at Kaaitheater in 2022 - the multilingual and interdisciplinary performance balances between art and reality, opportunism and empathy.  • Action Zoo Humain is an independent, dynamic and committed theatre company. It is focused on artistic development and produces performances. It examines the extent to which theatre can intervene directly in reality without losing sight of its poetic potential and self-criticism. It thus increases the playability of society. To this end, the organisation uses the historical concept of the 'zoo humain' as a (research) tool to interrogate ethnic, religious, political and economic zones of conflict. Action Zoo Humain works both locally and internationally, encouraging and developing collaborations with both autonomous artists and organisations.

L'un des fers de lance de la compagnie théâtrale de Ben Chika, Action Zoo Humain, est de confronter l'héritage culturel occidental à la réalité d'un monde pluriforme. Les artistes examinent la longue lutte entre Israël et la Palestine à travers le prisme de la plus ancienne tragédie du canon théâtral : Les Perses d'Eschyle. Eschyle, qui a lui-même combattu les Perses, a-t-il écrit avec une véritable empathie à leur sujet ou sa tragédie a-t-elle plutôt affirmé la supériorité des Grec·ques ? Quels parallèles pouvons-nous établir entre le monde d'aujourd'hui et celui d'alors ?  Dans cette représentation théâtrale pluridisciplinaire, Ben Chikha met la jeune génération au défi d'aiguiser ses visions personnelles, politiques et artistiques sur les deux principaux éléments de la tragédie : l'empathie et la fierté. Ce défi est encore accentué par un chœur polyphonique de Palestinien·nes et d’Israélien·nes que Ben Chikha a interviewé lorsqu'il se trouvait dans cette région en janvier 2024. Perzen constitue la deuxième partie de la Trilogie van de Empathie. Comme dans le premier volet, Flemish Primitives, qui a été présenté au Kaaitheater en 2022 et a fait l'objet de nombreuses discussions, la performance multilingue et interdisciplinaire oscille entre art et réalité, opportunisme et empathie.  • Action Zoo Humain est une compagnie de théâtre indépendante, dynamique et engagée. Elle s'engage dans le développement artistique et produit des spectacles. Elle explore dans quelle mesure le théâtre peut intervenir directement dans la réalité sans perdre de vue son potentiel poétique et son autocritique. Elle renforce ainsi la jouabilité de la société. À cette fin, l'organisation utilise le concept historique du "zoo humain" comme outil (de recherche) pour interroger les zones de conflit ethnique, religieux, politique et économique. Action Zoo Humain travaille à la fois au niveau local et international, encourageant et développant des collaborations avec des artistes et des organisations autonomes.

Eén van de speerpunten van Ben Chika’s theatergezelschap Action Zoo Humain wil het Westerse culturele erfgoed confronteren met de realiteit van een pluriforme wereld. De performers kijken naar de langdurige strijd tussen Israël en Palestina door de lens van de oudste tragedie uit de theatercanon: De Perzen van de Griekse tragediedichter Aeschylus. Schreef Aeschylus, die zelf tegen de Perzen vocht, over hen met oprechte empathie of bevestigde hij met zijn tragedie juist de superioriteit van de Grieken? Welke parallellen kunnen we leggen tussen de wereld toen en vandaag?  In deze multidisciplinaire theatervoorstelling daagt Ben Chikha de jonge generatie uit om hun persoonlijke, politieke en artistieke visies aan te scherpen door middel van de twee belangrijkste elementen uit de tragedie: empathie en hoogmoed. Deze challenge zet hij in de verf door een meerstemmig koor van Palestijnen en Israëliërs, geïnterviewd door Ben Chikha tijdens zijn bezoek aan de regio in januari 2024.    Perzen vormt het tweede deel van het drieluik Trilogie van de Empathie. Net als in het bejubelde en veelbesproken eerste luik Flemish Primitives – dat bij Kaaitheater was te zien in 2022 – balanceert de meertalige en interdisciplinaire performance tussen kunst en realiteit, opportunisme en empathie.   • Action Zoo Humain is een onafhankelijk, dynamisch en geëngageerd theatergezelschap. Het zet in op artistieke ontwikkeling en produceert voorstellingen. Het gaat na in hoeverre theater direct kan ingrijpen op de werkelijkheid zonder daarbij haar poëtisch potentieel en zelfkritiek uit het oog te verliezen. Zo vergroot het de speelbaarheid van de samenleving. De organisatie gebruikt hiervoor het historische concept van de ‘zoo humain’ als (onder)zoek(s)instrument om etnische, religieuze, politieke en economische conflictzones te bevragen. Action Zoo Humain werkt zowel lokaal als internationaal en stimuleert en ontwikkelt samenwerkingen met zowel autonome kunstenaars als organisaties.
