Michal Batory

Born in Poland in 1959 and a former student of the Lodz Academy of Fine Arts, Michał Batory is part of the great tradition of avant-garde graphic design among Polish poster artists. After moving to Paris in the late 1980s, he went on to work for the Théâtre national de Chaillot, the Théâtre national de la Colline, IRCAM and Radio France's “Signature” collection. For many years now, Ars Musica music lovers have been able to admire his personal style, as he signs the festival's graphic design and poster. Also, for Urban Nature, the Odradek Gallery presents an exhibition by Michał Batory, focusing mainly on his posters and the record sleeve covers he has created over the years. The graphic line of the visual communication he invented is revealed in all its coherence. Against a bright monochrome background, a body or object stands out, always poetic, between surrealism and abstraction, surprise and sometimes cruelty, off-beatness and misappropriation. The exhibition will also be accompanied by three concerts. Fabian Coomans on piano at the opening, Jean-Louis Marchand on clarinet on November 22, and saxophonist Jan Rzewski will perform in succession in the Odradek gallery, amidst the works of Michał Batory... Like a revelation, definitive, of the innovative relationship between image and music.

Né en 1959 en Pologne, ancien étudiant de l’Académie des Beaux-Arts de Lodz, Michał Batory s’inscrit dans la grande tradition de l’avant-garde graphique des affichistes polonais. Après s’être installé à Paris à la fin des années 1980, il travaille successivement pour le Théâtre national de Chaillot, le Théâtre national de la Colline ou encore pour l’IRCAM et la collection « Signature » de Radio France. Depuis de nombreuses années, les mélomanes de Ars Musica peuvent admirer son style, si personnel, puisqu’il signe le design graphique et l’affiche du festival. Aussi, pour Urban Nature, la Galerie Odradek présente une exposition de Michał Batory, essentiellement axée sur ses affiches et les couvertures de pochettes de disques qu’il a réalisées au fil du temps. La ligne graphique de la communication visuelle qu’il a inventée s’y dévoile dans toute sa cohérence. Sur un fond monochrome éclatant, un corps ou objet se détache, toujours poétique, entre surréalisme et abstraction, surprise et parfois cruauté, décalage et détournement. De plus, trois concerts accompagneront cette exposition. En effet, Fabian Coomans au piano lors du vernissage, puis Jean-Louis Marchand à la clarinette le 22 novembre, et, enfin, le saxophoniste Jan Rzewski se produiront successivement dans la galerie Odradek, au milieu des œuvres de Michał Batory… Telle une révélation, définitive, des rapports innovants entre image et musique.

Michał Batory (Polen, 1959) studeerde aan de Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Łódź en maakt deel uit van de grote traditie van grafische avant-garde van Poolse posterkunstenaars. Nadat hij eind jaren 1980 naar Parijs verhuisde, werkte hij achtereenvolgens voor het Théâtre national de Chaillot, het Théâtre national de la Colline, IRCAM en de "Signature" collectie van Radio France. Aangezien Batory de vaste grafisch ontwerper is van de festivalaffiches van Ars Musica, kunnen muziekliefhebbers zijn uitgesproken stijl al vele jaren bewonderen.

Ter gelegenheid van de 2024 editie van Ars Musica stelt de Odradek Gallery een overzicht tentoon van de posters en platenhoezen die Michał Batory door de jaren heen heeft ontworpen. Dit overzicht laat zien hoe zijn unieke grafische lijnvoering leidt tot een grote coherentie in zijn visuele taal. Tegen een heldere monochrome achtergrond tekent een lichaam of object zich af, altijd poëtisch maar zwevend tussen surrealisme en abstractie, verrassing, soms zelfs wreedheid, contrast en verdraaiing. Bovendien zullen maar liefst drie concerten in de Odradek-galerij de tentoonstelling opluisteren. Bij de vernissage (10/10) speelt Fabian Coomans piano, vervolgens zijn Jean-Louis Marchand (klarinet) en Ruben Tenenbaum (viool) te gast op 22 november. Jan Rzewski sluit af op 30 november. De muziek weerklinkt telkens te midden van de werken van Michał Batory. Een mooie uiting van de bijzondere relatie tussen beeld en muziek.
