HP24 - A Study of Power

Nino Wassmer invites us to share a participatory experience in a closed space. Standing in the middle of a circle that we form, the artist gives us the opportunity to manipulate his body using 6 lengths of wood. From being mere spectators, the audience find themselves at the heart of this creation, connected to this dancing and juggling body through big sticks. The mechanisms of power and consent are tested. How does it feel directing the performer? Can we resist? What are the boundaries?

This performance is inspired by studies into human behaviour in the face of authority, like those of Stanford and Milgram. A Study of Power questions – from within – dominant/submissive relationships, the power of the group over the individual, as well as the roots of obedience. A captivating experience of sound and the senses.

Nino Wassmer nous invite à vivre une expérience participative dans une pièce close. Debout au milieu du cercle que nous formons, l’artiste nous met en situation de manipuler son corps au moyen de 6 tasseaux de bois. De simple spectateur·ice, le public devient sujet de la création, connecté à ce corps dansant et jonglant par le biais de grands bâtons. On teste les mécanismes du pouvoir et du consentement. Quel est le ressenti en dirigeant le performeur ? Peut-on résister ? Quelles sont les limites ?

La performance s’inspire d’études comme celles de Stanford ou Milgram sur le comportement humain face à l’autorité. A Study of power interroge de l’intérieur les relations de domination/ soumission, le pouvoir du groupe exercé sur l’individu ainsi que les racines de l’obéissance. Une expérience sensorielle et sonore captivante.

Nino Wassmer nodigt ons uit voor een participatieve ervaring in een afgesloten ruimte. De artiest staat in het midden van een cirkel die we vormen en laat ons zijn lichaam manipuleren met 6 houten balken. Het publiek is niet langer een gewone toeschouwer, maar wordt deel van de creatie, verbonden met dit dansende, jonglerende lichaam door middel van lange stokken. Men test de mechanismen van macht en toestemming. Hoe voelt het om de performer te regisseren? Kun je weerstand bieden? Wat zijn de grenzen?

De voorstelling is geïnspireerd op studies zoals die van Stanford en Milgram over menselijk gedrag tegenover autoriteit. A Study of Power werpt een blik van binnenuit op de verhoudingen tussen gezag en onderwerping, de macht van de groep over het individu en de wortels van gehoorzaamheid. Een boeiende zintuiglijke en auditieve ervaring.
