L'ancien artiste associé Rand Abou-Fakher invite la cinéaste syrienne Hala Abdallah autour d'une projection et d'une discussion. À la fois masterclass et remise en question de celle-ci, il s'agira pour les deux cinéastes d'aborder leurs œuvres respectives et la question de l'exil, à partir d'un passé commun et du point de vue de leurs deux générations distinctes.

Cela fait 25 ans que la réalisatrice Hala Abdallah est bannie de Syrie. Dans son premier documentaire, qui est salué par la critique, elle présente une étude intensément personnelle de son pays natal, et réfléchit non seulement au deuil subi par tant de ses compatriotes, mais aussi à leur incroyable résilience. Le documentaire intègre les interviews de trois ami·e·s ayant quitté la Syrie pour la France, ainsi que des images de son mari Youssef Abdelke, un peintre qui retrouve sa mère après une longue période.

De vorige geassocieerde artiest Rand Abou-Fakher nodigt de Syrische filmmaker Hala Al-Abdallah uit voor een gesprek en een vertoning. Opgezet als een masterclass, maar ook een kritische reflectie op het concept van de masterclass, gaan de twee filmmakers – afkomstig uit twee verschillende generaties maar met een gedeeld verleden – in gesprek over hun respectieve werk en reflecteren ze op werken in ballingschap.

Filmmaker Hala Abdallah werd 25 jaar geleden uit Syrië verbannen. Haar veelgeprezen documentaire (en debuutfilm!) is een intens persoonlijk portret van haar geboorteland Syrië, waarin ze niet alleen reflecteert op het verlies waarmee zoveel van haar landgenoten worstelen, maar ook op hun enorme veerkracht. De documentaire verweeft interviews met drie van haar vrienden die Syrië al lang geleden hebben verlaten voor Frankrijk, met beelden van haar man Youssef Abdelke, een schilder die na lange tijd wordt herenigd met zijn moeder.

The previous associated artist Rand Abou-Fakher invites the Syrian filmmaker Hala Al-Abdallah for a conversation and a screening. Conceived as a masterclass, but also questioning the idea of the masterclass, the two filmmakers from two different generations but sharing a past, will talk about their respective work, and reflect on working in exile.

Filmmaker Hala Abdallah was banned from Syria 25 years ago. Her acclaimed debut documentary is an intensely personal study of her native country Syria in which she reflects not only on the sense of loss which so many of her compatriots are coping with, but also on their enormous resilience. The documentary integrates interviews with three of her friends who have long ago left Syria for France with images of her husband Youssef Abdelke, a painter who is reunited with his mother after a long time.
