The punk culture that emerged in the mid-1970s focused partly on aesthetics but even more so on an attitude: the possibility of undermining the functionality and productivity of the world. In opposition to hi-fi cultures that see noise as polluting the signal one wants to send, lo-fi cultures view noise as a state to be inhabited rather than a disturbance to be eliminated. This noise protects the world from being too legible. But how can a choreography embrace this state of noise? Katerina Andreou is a Greek artist whose previous creations were notable for their singular choreographic language, which completely subverts the harmony of the body and the canon of dance: the steps are disjointed and furious, with a syncopated energy that catches us off guard. With this first collective creation premiering at the festival, Andreou unveils the chaotic resistance of punk and noise as a state of mind to a world that wants to be increasingly transparent and simplified. Together with an incredibly skilled group of performers, she embraces this energy, the frank and direct gestures and steps, carrying elements of playfulness and absurdity. This carefully constructed confusion might appear as a territory in which one is not lost, but perhaps more solid and secure. Bless this mess!

Lors de son apparition au milieu des années 1970, la culture punk n'était pas uniquement basée sur une esthétique, mais aussi et surtout sur une attitude : la volonté d’ébranler les aspects fonctionnels et productifs de notre société. En opposition à la culture « hi-fi », qui perçoit le bruit comme un élément à éliminer car il pollue un signal, la culture « lo-fi » considère le bruit comme un état à habiter, comme quelque chose qui nous protège d’un monde trop aseptisé. Mais comment une chorégraphie peut-elle embrasser cet état de bruit ? Dans ses précédentes créations, Katerina Andreou s'est distinguée par l'utilisation d'un langage chorégraphique singulier qui bouscule complètement l'harmonie du corps et les canons de la danse : les pas sont désarticulés, comme furieux, dans une énergie syncopée qui nous prend au dépourvu. Présentée en première au festival, cette nouvelle création expose la résistance chaotique de l'esprit punk à un monde qui se veut de plus en plus transparent et lisse. Avec un groupe de performeur·euses à la technique impeccable, Andreou intègre à cette énergie des gestes et des pas francs et directs, porteurs de jeu et d'absurdité. La confusion y apparaît comme construite ou même stable et rassurante, mais jamais déroutante. Bless this mess (« vive ce désordre »)

De punkcultuur die halfweg de jaren ‘70 opkwam, wordt gekenmerkt door een bepaalde esthetiek en een sterk verlangen om de functionaliteit en productiviteit van de wereld onderuit te halen. In tegenstelling tot ‘hifi’-cultuur die lawaai ziet als een verstoring van het signaal dat men wil uitzenden, beschouwt ‘lofi’-cultuur deze ruis eerder als een toestand die kan worden bewoond en de wereld beschermt tegen een te grote leesbaarheid. Hoe kan een choreografie deze staat van ruis omarmen, vraagt de Griekse artieste Katerina Andreou zich af. In eerdere creaties viel haar unieke choreografische taal op die de harmonie van het lichaam en de danscanon volledig ondermijnt: de passen zijn onsamenhangend en wild, met een gesyncopeerde energie die de toeschouwer van zijn stuk brengt. Met deze eerste groepscreatie die op het festival in première gaat, demonstreert Andreou het chaotische verzet van punk en noise tegen een wereld die steeds transparanter en eenduidiger wil zijn. Samen met een groep virtuoze performers vangt ze de energie van punk, via oprechte en directe bewegingen met speelse en absurde elementen. De geregisseerde verwarring die hieruit ontstaat, wordt een territorium waarin we niet per se verdwalen maar net meer standvastigheid en veiligheid kunnen vinden. Bless this mess!
