Camille Saint-Saëns wrote his Second Piano Concerto in barely three weeks at the request of Anton Rubinstein. However, the premiere, with Saint-Saëns himself playing the piano part, turned into a complete disaster because he had not had enough time to rehearse the concerto alongside composing it. Today, this work is by far the most famous of the five piano concertos that Saint-Saëns composed.
Although the famous 'Viennese Waltz' only came into being at the beginning of the 19th century, Richard Strauss used a lot of waltz music in the second and third acts of Der Rosenkavalier. Critics were highly dissatisfied with this anachronism, but the audience enjoyed Strauss' music so much that the orchestral highlights were soon compiled into an enchanting suite.

Camille Saint-Saëns a écrit son Deuxième concerto pour piano en seulement trois semaines sur demande d'Anton Rubinstein. Cependant, la première, où Saint-Saëns jouait lui-même la partie de piano, fut un échec cuisant. Il n'avait tout simplement pas eu le temps de répéter le concerto en plus de le composer. Aujourd'hui, cette œuvre est de loin la plus célèbre des cinq concertos pour piano que Saint-Saëns a composés.
Bien que la célèbre "Wiener Walz" ne soit apparue qu'au début du XIXe siècle, Richard Strauss a utilisé de nombreux airs de valse pour les deuxième et troisième actes de Der Rosenkavalier. Cet anachronisme a déplu à la critique, mais le public a tellement apprécié la musique de Strauss que les moments forts de l'orchestre ont rapidement été regroupés dans une suite envoûtante.

De première, waarbij Saint-Saëns zelf de pianopartij speelde, liep echter grandioos in het honderd doordat hij niet genoeg tijd had gehad om naast het componeren ook nog het concerto in te studeren. Vandaag is dit werk met afstand het beroemdste van de vijf pianoconcerti die Saint-Saëns componeerde.
Ofschoon de befaamde ‘Wiener Walz’ pas aan het begin van de 19de eeuw het levenslicht zag, gebruikte Richard Strauss in het tweede en derde bedrijf van Der Rosenkavalier heel wat walsmuziek. Critici waren hoogst ontevreden met dit anachronisme, maar het publiek kon Strauss’ muziek zozeer smaken dat de orkestrale hoogtepunten al snel werden gebundeld in een betoverende suite.
