The architectural office Diener & Diener pays close attention to the architectural history of the city and modernity as it develops new types of buildings. This has been evident since its first projects, the residential development in the heart of Kleinbasel and the residential buildings in the St-Alban-Tal, a historically sensitive Basel neighborhood on the banks of the Rhein.

As it continues to develop contemporary residential buildings, the office of Diener & Diener maintains its focus on this subject matter. The results of this focus can be seen in the projects they realized on the on the Warteck site in Basel and Java and KNSM Island in Amsterdam, the Basel Markthalle Tower, or the residential building of the Mustersiedlung Hadersdorf, Vienna, the residential buildings in Lyon Confluence and the latest designs for Hamburg.

Diener & Diener takes a keen interest in creating new types of building. Examples of this interest are the university building in Malmö or the Mémorial de la Shoah in Drancy.

The office has developed various urban design plans to restructure large industrial areas. These include the master plans for the ABB grounds in Baden, the port of Malmö, and the parent plant of the Dräger Corporation in Lübeck.

Planning and design projects also include office and research buildings such as the Swiss Re headquarters on Zurich's Mythenquai, the Baloîse Group in Basel, the Forum 3 on the Novartis Campus in Basel, as well as the laboratory building on the Novartis Campus in Shanghai and the wooden office building on Grosspeter in Basel.

When working on architectural projects in culturally sensitive contexts, Diener & Diener has sought to engage with artists such as Helmut Federle, Steiner & Lenzlinger, Josef Felix Müller and Marc Camille Chaimowicz. In their search for the unique expression of a specific location, the architects and artists would reciprocally seek to radically amplify the respective ideas of architecture and art: only where art becomes an inseparable element of the architectural design while maintaining its independence can art extend architecture.

“The House and the City,” the field of debate and exchange that extends between the poles of modern-day buildings and their historic counterparts within the context of the European cityscape has increasingly become the touchstone and topic of theoretical reflection guiding the architecture and urban design of Diener & Diener. This can be seen most clearly in extensions designed for historical buildings, such as the Swiss Embassy in Berlin, the City Museum Aarau, and the East Wing for the Museum of Natural History in Berlin. For this last project, Diener & Diener received the DAM Prize for Architecture in 2011.

Today, Diener & Diener employs 50 architects in Basel and Berlin from many different nations. Roger Diener established the office Diener & Diener Architects in 1980 with his father and just four years after joining the office Marcus Diener Architect, the office his father formed in Basel in 1942. The Basel offices are located on Henric Petri-Strasse 22, in a building Marcus Diener designed in 1963. In 1998, Diener & Diener opened an office in Berlin on Rosenthaler Strasse 40/41.

Roger Diener has led the office Diener & Diener with Terese Erngaard, Michael Roth, and Andreas Rüedi since 2011.

Le 4 octobre prochain, Lunch with an Architect aura le plaisir de recevoir Roger Diener, de l’agence Diener & Diener Architekten. Un nom qui n’est pas anodin puisque l’architecture est une affaire de famille! Tout commence avec Marcus qui transmet à son fils Roger la passion de l’architecture.

Depuis plusieurs décennies, Diner & Diener s’inscrit dans la longue liste des architectes suisses dont le nom résonne à l’international. L’agence s’est taillée une place de choix dans les rues de Bâle dont il a largement façonné l’identité avant d’atteindre une renommée internationale avec l’ouverture d’un bureau à Berlin et des projets partout dans le monde, dont un projet résidentiel à Bruxelles.

Roger Diener peut être qualifié de bâtisseur qui s’appuie sur l’histoire pour l’ancrer dans la modernité urbaine. Tout en définissant constamment de nouveaux types de constructions, il s’attaque à des projets chargés d’histoire, son processus de conception visant à établir une corrélation entre l’ouvrage de construction et la cohésion sociale de la ville.

Suivant ce fil rouge, Diener & Diener Architekten a développé des bâtiments mettant en relation l’histoire architecturale d’une ville avec la modernité. A titre d’exemples, citons les extensions conçues pour le Mémorial de la Shoah à Drancy ou l’aile du musée d’histoire naturelle de Berlin.

«Nous sommes convaincus qu’une conception d’un plan d’urbanisme ou d’un projet architectural ne peut se développer sans s’enraciner solidement dans la mémoire d’une ville. C’est notre volonté: imbriquer le lieu et le temps dans un design», revendique le cabinet. Le contexte dans lequel se situe un édifice se veut dès lors une priorité dans ses missions.

Roger Diener s’est également illustré comme concepteur de bâtiments de bureaux et de recherche, comme le siège social du Groupe Bâloise, le laboratoire du campus Novartis à Shanghai, le siège social de Swiss Re à Zurich mais aussi la Maison Davidoff à Bâle.

Enfin,  l’agence est également très impliquée dans l’élaboration de plans d’urbanismes afin de que ce soit Baden, à Malmö, à Genève, sur l’île de Java, à Amsterdam, à Vienne ou encore à Rome.

Une palette des plus diversifiées qui vaut à Roger Diener une reconnaissance particulière traduite au travers de ses nombreuses invitations à enseigner à Harvard, Cambridge, Amsterdam, Copenhague, Zurich et Lausanne et des prix couronnant son travail comme la Grande Médaille d’Or de l’Académie d’Architecture de Paris ou la Médaille d’Or Heinrich Tessenow à Hambourg, que sur le sol suisse, avec le prix Meret Oppenheim et le prix culturel du canton de Bâle-Ville.

Op 4 oktober is Roger Diener, van architectenbureau Diener & Diener Architekten, te gast bij Lunch with an Architect. Een naam die heel wat zegt: architectuur is een familiezaak, en Marcus maakte daar werk van toen hij zijn passie voor architectuur overbracht op zijn zoon Roger.

Diener & Diener is inmiddels al decennialang bekend als een van de toonaangevende Zwitserse architectenbureaus. Het bureau vestigde zich eerst op een uitgelezen locatie in Bazel, waar het naamsbekendheid opbouwde alvorens internationaal door te breken met een bureau in Berlijn en projecten wereldwijd, waaronder een residentieel project in Brussel.

Roger Diener is een echte bouwer, die de geschiedenis als fundament gebruikt en zich verankert in de grootstedelijke moderniteit. Hij denkt voortdurend nieuwe gebouwtypen uit en gaat graag aan de slag met projecten die een sterke historische component hebben. Zijn ontwerpproces is erop gericht een correlatie te scheppen tussen het bouwwerk en de sociale samenhang binnen de stad.

Deze rode draad volgend, bracht Diener & Diener een reeks gebouwen tot stand waarbij de architecturale geschiedenis van een stad hand in hand gaat met de moderniteit. Neem bijvoorbeeld de uitbreiding van het holocaustmonument in Drancy en de nieuwe vleugel van het natuurhistorisch museum in Berlijn.

'Wij zijn ervan overtuigd dat een stedenbouwkundig plan of een architectuurproject alleen van de grond kan komen als het stevig geworteld is in de herinneringen van een stad. Dat is waar wij naar streven: een design waarin de plek en de tijd elkaar vinden', aldus het bureau. De context waarbinnen een pand zich bevindt, krijgt dan ook prioriteit binnen elk project.

Roger Diener verwierf ook faam als ontwerper van kantoor- en onderzoeksgebouwen, zoals de maatschappelijke zetel van de Groupe Bâloise, het laboratorium op de Novartis-campus in Shanghai, het hoofdkantoor van Swiss Re in Zürich en het Maison Davidoff in Bazel.

Tot slot is het kantoor nauw betrokken bij stedenbouwkundige ontwerpprojecten op uiteenlopende plekken als Baden, Malmö, Genève, Java, Amsterdam, Wenen en Rome.

Roger Diener kan kortom bogen op een brede expertise, die hem wereldwijd erkenning heeft opgeleverd. Geen wonder dat hij op vaste tijden wordt uitgenodigd om te doceren in Harvard, Cambridge, Amsterdam, Kopenhagen, Zürich en Lausanne, en dat zijn werk regelmatig met prijzen wordt bekroond, zoals de Grande Médaille d’Or van de Académie d’Architecture in Parijs, de Heinrich Tessenow-medaille in Hamburg, de Zwitserse Prix Meret-Oppenheim en de culturele prijs van het kanton Bazel-Stad.
