Panafrica: Image, Music, Text

Pan-Africanism is seen primarily as a political project. But in the many guises it takes, it also engages in cultural and aesthetic innovation. Imagining Panafrica as the promised land implied a utopian endeavor, new forms of representation and new strategies of dissemination. Focusing on iconography, orality and poetry, this symposium examines how certain artistic and aesthetic practices of the 20th century shaped Pan-African thought.



Panafrica: Image, Text, Sound kickstarts a multi-year and multi-sited series of public programs connected to Project a Black Planet: The Art and Culture of Panafrica, the first exhibition expressly devoted to surveying modern and contemporary cultural activity through a pan-Africanist lens. The exhibition brings together several hundred examples of creative production in architecture, design, film, literature, sound, and visual art, from the 1920s to the present. The exhibition opens at the Art Institute of Chicago in December 2024, and will subsequently travel to venues including to the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (Summer 2025) and to KANAL-Centre Pompidou (Fall/Winter 2025/2026).

Vu avant tout comme un projet politique, le panafricanisme, dans ses nombreuses manifestations, relève également de l'innovation culturelle et esthétique. La projection utopique d'une terre promise panafricaine a exigé de nouveaux genres de représentation et de nouvelles stratégies de diffusion. En se concentrant sur l'iconographie, l'oralité et la poétique, ce symposium examine comment certaines pratiques artistiques et esthétiques du vingtième siècle ont donné corps à la pensée panafricaniste.



Panafrica: Image, Music, Text donne le coup d'envoi d'une série de programmes publics pluriannuels et multi-sites, liés à Project a Black Planet: The Art and Culture of Panafrica, la première exposition entièrement consacrée à l'étude des activités culturelles modernes et contemporaines à travers le prisme panafricaniste. L'exposition réunit plusieurs centaines d'exemples de productions créatives en architecture, design, cinéma, littérature, son et arts visuels, des années 1920 à nos jours. L'exposition s'ouvre à l'Art Institute of Chicago en décembre 2024, puis voyage au Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona à l'été 2025 pour arriver à KANAL-Centre Pompidou à l'automne 2025.

Het panafrikanisme wordt in de eerste plaats gezien als een politiek project. Maar in de vele gedaantes die het aanneemt, houdt het zich ook in met culturele en esthetische vernieuwing. Het verbeelden van Panafrika als het beloofde land impliceerde een utopisch streven, nieuwe vormen van representatie en nieuwe strategieën van verspreiding. Door zich te richten op iconografie, oraliteit en dichtkunst, onderzoekt dit symposium hoe bepaalde artistieke en esthetische praktijken uit de 20e eeuw het pan-Afrikaanse gedachtegoed hebben vormgegeven.





Panafrica: Image, Text, Sound is de start van een reeks publieksprogramma's op verschillende locaties en over een aantal jaren verspreid. Ze zijn gekoppeld aan Project a Black Planet: The Art and Culture of Panafrica, de eerste tentoonstelling die uitdrukkelijk gewijd is aan het onderzoek naar moderne en hedendaagse culturele activiteiten door een pan-Afrikaanse lens. De tentoonstelling verzamelt honderden voorbeelden van creatieve productie in architectuur, design, film, literatuur, geluid en beeldende kunst, van de jaren 1920 tot nu. Ze opent in december 2024 in het Art Institute of Chicago en reist nadien naar het Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (zomer 2025) en KANAL- Centre Pompidou (herfst 2025).
