A group of artists were invited to be inspired by the work of the well-known, Belgian filmmaker Chantal Akerman, specifically her film 'News from Home' (1976). The busy city of New York serves as the film’s main character. Meanwhile, we hear Akerman’s voice reading letters from her mother in Brussels. She recounts daily anecdotes from the home front and increasingly urgent requests for news from New York. 

The artists made one film together: each with their own voice, style, and starting point. During the working process, questions arose: how do you as an artist relate to another film practice, how do you create a collective work while maintaining your individuality? 

You’ll see no less than five different films within one kaleidoscopic film:

Details such as letters and metros, and themes such as dislocation, detached city life, alienation versus feeling at home, distance versus proximity, and the mother-daughter relationship echo Akerman’s films. Unfortunately, the artists are no longer able to engage directly with the filmmaker, who passed away in 2015. However, this joint work attests to a way of engaging in dialogue with her work.

Un groupe d’artistes est invité à s’inspirer du travail de la célèbre cinéaste belge Chantal Akerman, et en particulier du film News from Home (1976). La trépidante ville de New York constitue le personnage principal du film, et on entend la voix d’Akerman qui lit des lettres de sa mère à Bruxelles : elle raconte des anecdotes quotidiennes de chez elle et demande de façon de plus en plus pressante de nouvelles de New York. 

Les artistes ont réalisé ensemble un film : chacun avec sa propre voix, son propre style et son propre point de départ. Au cours du processus de travail, des questions surgissent, telles que « comment, en tant qu’artiste, se situer par rapport à la pratique cinématographique de quelqu’un d’autre ? » ou « comment créer une œuvre collective tout en conservant son individualité ? »

Vous découvrez pas moins de cinq films différents dans un film kaléidoscopique : 'Stone, Hat, Ribbon and Rose' d’Eva Giolo, 'Barefoot Birthdays on Unbreakable Glass' de Rebecca Jane Arthur, 'When Things Fall Apart' de Katja Mater, 'Un Âne' du duo d’artistes Sirah Foighel Brutmann et Eitan Efrat et 'The possibility of being sea' de Maaike Neuville. Des détails littéraires tels que des lettres et des métros, et des thèmes comme le déracinement, le détachement de la vie urbaine, le sentiment d’étrangeté versus celui d’être chez soi, la distance versus la proximité, et la relation mère-fille font écho aux films d’Akerman. Malheureusement, les artistes ne sont plus en mesure de dialoguer directement avec la cinéaste, décédée en 2015. Cependant, ce travail commun témoigne d’une tentative d’entrer en dialogue avec son œuvre.

Een groep kunstenaars werd uitgenodigd om zich te laten inspireren door het werk van de bekende, Belgische filmmaker Chantal Akerman, meerbepaald door 'News from Home' (1976). De drukke stad New York fungeert als hoofdpersonage in de film. Ondertussen horen we de stem van Akerman die brieven voorleest van haar moeder in Brussel. Ze vertelt dagdagelijkse anekdotes van het thuis front en vraagt steeds urgenter om nieuws uit New York. 

De kunstenaars maakten samen één film te maken: elk met hun eigen stem, stijl en uitgangspunt. Tijdens het werkproces, ontstonden vragen zoals: hoe verhoud je je als kunstenaar tot andere filmpraktijken, hoe creëer je een collectief werk met behoud van je eigenheid? 

Je krijgt maar liefst vijf verschillende films te zien binnen één caleidoscopische film: 'Stone, Hat, Ribbon and Rose' van Eva Giolo, 'Barefoot Birthdays on Unbreakable Glass' van Rebecca Jane Arthur, 'When Things Fall Apart' van Katja Mater, 'Un Âne' van het kunstenaarsduo Sirah Foighel Brutmann & Eitan Efrat en 'The possibility of being sea' van Maaike Neuville. Letterlijke details zoals brieven en metro’s, en thema’s zoals dislocatie, het onthechte stadsleven, vervreemding versus zich thuis voelen, afstand versus nabijheid, en de moeder-dochterrelatie echoën de films van Akerman. De kunstenaars kunnen helaas niet meer rechtstreeks in gesprek gaan met de filmmaakster, die in 2015 overleed. Dit collectieve werk getuigt echter van een manier om met haar werk in dialoog te treden.

Vincent rêve depuis toujours d’avoir sa place au sein d’une véritable famille de chats... Mais ne voulant pas perdre son amitié avec Maurice, qui lui a sauvé la vie, il est forcé de cacher la souris des gardiens félins du musée. Son ami rongeur a en outre une faiblesse – il adore ronger les œuvres d’art. Les choses se compliquent davantage quand une des peintures les plus célèbres au monde, la Joconde, intègre les collections du musée, tous les rats et souris du monde rêvent de ronger cette œuvre d’art ! Cependant, ce que ni Vincent, ni Maurice, ni même les chats de l’Ermitage ne savent, c’est que quelqu’un cherche à voler le célèbre tableau. Vincent doit à présent trouver le moyen de sauver l’œuvre de De Vinci, tout en protégeant la réputation du musée et en essayant de gagner le cœur de Cléopâtre, la magnifique gardienne de la chambre égyptienne du musée.

LIES WE TELL makes for a deeply involving story of dark family secrets coming up to the surface and an evolving game of wits. Mulcahy’s focused direction is lean, stripping the story back to its essentials and ensuring that each scene has meaning and furthers the narrative. It grips from the opening moments and then gradually accelerates as events take a sinister turn. This is not an airless period piece with an expected wedding at the end. It plays out as a suspenseful drama, driven by Aza Hand’s evocative music and lush cinematography by Eleanor Bowman. There is a careful, refined quality to the filmmaking which bypasses predictability and turns the narrative around to its rightful place without coming across as forced. The discovery of gigantic gas deposits has aroused the appetite of several oil companies such as Gazprom, Novatek, TOTAL, or Chinese National Petroleum Corp. They take over land, pastures and gradually exterminate a Nomad tribe to satisfy energetic and geopolitical interest. Is the fight between these two worlds a losing battle ? How do the Nenets get organized to fight ? Western polaire et environnemental, ce film documentaire nous plonge dans l’émergence de la route maritime du Nord-est et la disparition de l’ultime route de transhumance sibérienne. Le succès de l’un peut signifier l’extinction de l’autre.

In 1975, two boys in the small Irish town of Tuam discovered what turned out to be human remains in a playground. The authorities wrote it off as an old burial ground from the time of the famine. 37 years later, local historian Catherine Corless began an investigation into children born at the former Mother and Baby Home in the area, eventually uncovering so many discrepancies that she was able to persuade the police to investigate its grounds. What followed was the discovery of large numbers of children’s bodies, with 802 children believed to have died at the home during its 36 yeasrs of operation, many from causes which it is difficult not to associate with neglect. 12 women also died there – but that was just the tip of the iceberg. The scandal with subsequently engulfed the island, with socking cases on both sides of the border, involves horrors which are difficult to countenance, not least because the practices from which they stemmed ended as recently as the 1990s. Margo Harkin’s powerful new documentary, Stolen, investigates what happened, with women who were resident in the homes telling their stories, and addresses the cultural issues which made it possible.

Les rythmes de leur travail font place à un nouvel espace de mouvement. ********** English ********** Wayfaring Stranger charts the life of an itinerant character, embodied by seven per formers, across seven days, representing seven decades. Running from the city, through post-industrial edge lands and manicured enclaves, they find themselves in forests, farms, mountains and the shore. Along the way, they undergo a transformation, through the seasons and changing geography, both physically and emotionally, from youth to elderhood, and from a single, alienated being into an accepted element of the wider world. Each ‘day ’ is a ‘station’ that signifies a turning point in a character’s emotional development : from escape, through loss, grief and waywardness, to solidarity and co-existence. ********** Français ********** Wayfaring Stranger retrace la vie d’un personnage itinérant, incarné par sept personnages, sur sept jours, représentant sept décennies. Ils quittent la ville, traversent des zones post-industrielles et des enclaves bien entretenues, puis se retrouvent dans des forêts, des fermes, des montagnes et sur le littoral. Au fil des saisons et des changements géographiques, ils se transforment physiquement et émotionnellement, passant de la jeunesse à la vieillesse, d’un être isolé et aliéné à un élément accepté du reste du monde. Chaque « jour » est une « étape » qui marque un tournant dans l’évolution émotionnelle d’un personnage: de la fuite à la solidarité et à la coexistence, en passant par la perte, le chagrin et l’égarement.
