TCHA LIMBERGER ( VIOLIN), RENÉ BIKAR ( BRÁCS), VILMOS CSIKOS ( DOUBLE BASS) Tcha’s trio of Budapest musicians causes a sensation, with bursts of soaring musical tragedy and czardas madness delivered with an astounding purity of sound and hardly imaginable depth of musical dialogue. In true Budapest gypsy style they switch between soaring intensity and smouldering pathos delivering a passion and technical virtuosity that astounds. MAGYAR NÓTA is music actually composed by the Hungarian nobility, to liven up their noble feasts and parties. They were looking in the 19th century for Hungarian music, that had to be less primitive than the traditional Hungarian music, which was only played by the illiterate peasants. So they invented a new style, based on elements of Hungarian folk music, both textual and melodic-harmonic, all played with a classical Western European sound. They hired gypsy musicians to come and live with them at the castles, where they should learn to play violin, double bass, clarinet and cimbalom in a classical way. Then they should make the new repertoire into one of the most highly regarded forms of popular music. ‘I myself started to learn that style because the Sinti, Gypsies from western Europe, including my own family, very much look up to, and love, this Hungarian music. Manouche and Sinti used to copy that style, but without the necessary know-how and especially without the Hungarian language, which one needs very much to be able to interpret that style well. This is why I started to learn Hungarian at the age of 20 and spent a year and a half in Budapest to master this music. I then founded the Tcha Limberger's Budapest Orchestra. For this concert we speak of the Budapest Ensemble, since it consists of not more than three musicians. ********** Français ********** Née d'une famille cosmopolite, Joe Bel a grandi en voyageant entre les Alpes françaises, la mer Méditerranée et l'Amérique du Nord. Elle développa un amour pour la musique dès son plus jeune âge après avoir été bercée par les vinyles de Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Otis Redding, ainsi que les chants traditionnels judéo-espagnols chers à la famille. Instinctive et autodidacte, Joe fait ses tous premiers pas sur scène seule à la guitare en 2012, juste après la naissance de son premier enfant, à l’âge de 23 ans. Quelques mois plus tard, Asaf Avidan découvre sa soul folk envoûtante et lui offre toutes les premières parties de sa tournée européenne. Son EP remarqué, « Hit the Roads », lui a permis de se produire à travers l'Europe et jusqu'au Japon. En 2020, attendant son deuxième enfant, elle se lance dans l’écriture de son deuxième opus, « Family Tree » : une exploration à la recherche de ses origines multiples, alliant folk, mélodies entêtantes et couleurs méditerranéennes. À travers un son toujours organique, en anglais et en français, mais également en ladino, ancien espagnol que parlait encore son grand-père, elle choisit de se dévoiler un peu plus, dans un album qui invite au voyage de la transmission entre les générations. ********** Nederlands ********** Joe Bel werd geboren in een kosmopolitische familie, en groeide op terwijl ze reisde tussen de Franse Alpen, de Middellandse Zee en Noord-Amerika. Al op jonge leeftijd ontwikkelde ze een liefde voor muziek. Ze werd geraakt door de platen van Paul McCartney, George Harrison en Otis Redding, maar evenzeer door de traditionele Joods-Spaanse liederen die haar familie dierbaar zijn. In 2012, op 23-jarige leeftijd, zette ze haar eerste stappen op het podium, solo en met enkel haar gitaar als begeleiding. Enkele maanden later ontdekte Asaf Avidan haar beklijvende folk soul, en bood haar prompt alle support slots aan op zijn Europese tour. Haar veelgeprezen EP ‘Hit the Roads’ bracht haar ondertussen door heel Europa en zelfs Japan, en in 2020 begon ze te schrijven aan ‘Family Tree’, een plaat waarop ze haar meervoudige afkomst exploreert. Het album is een geweldige combinatie van folk, onstuimige melodieën en mediterrane kleuren, waarop ze zingt in het Engels en het Frans, maar ook in het Ladino, het oude Spaans dat nog steeds door haar grootvader wordt gesproken. ‘Family Tree’ is intergenerationeel, en heeft voor iedereen wel wat te bieden.

Nicolas Delaigue is a sitar and surbahar player, specialist of north indian classical music. After years of immersion, practice and dedication to this art, he was able to create a bridge between India and the West, and become a reference in the interpretation and teaching of this music in Europe. Nicolas has learned sitar and hindustani classical music with Patrick Moutal, Indrajit Banerjee and have received additionnal training with Sugato and Ustad Shahid Parvez. Today, as a international concert performer, Nicolas have presented his music in many prestigious venues in Europe and around the world. Nicolas teaches sitar, Indian music and modal improvisation in numerous public, private and associative structures throughout France and Europe. In 2022, he was appointed professor of Indian Music and modal improvisation at the National Conservatory of Paris (CNSMDP). An All India Radio Grade A Artist, Sandip Banerjee is playing tabla since 1973. He is well known for his graceful accompaniment and powerful adept solo performance. He is an enlisted artist in ICCR( Indian Council for Cultural Relation) in professional category and SPIC MACAY. He has several CDs with different artists in India and abroad. His book on learning Tabla titled ‘Le Tabla’ has been published from ID Music, France. This book is also available in English now. A rare combination of talent, dedication and good sensibilities have brought Sandip to the top of his art. ********** English ********** This spring, the European Union will convene the eighth Brussels Conference on “Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region,” set to take place on April 30th (Day of Dialogue) and May 27th (Ministerial Event). Over the past thirteen years, the Brussels Conference has emerged as the primary international gathering for Syria, and as a vital platform for engaging the global community in listening to the voices of Syrian civil society and addressing their most pressing needs. As part of this year's conference, the EU is organising “Tales of Art from Syria,” a vibrant cultural initiative aimed at showcasing Syrian arts. From April 30th to May 28th, 2024, Brussels will host a diverse array of Syrian visual artists, performers, writers, and musicians, offering them the opportunity to share their stories, and visions for the future. The program will feature four film screenings, three of which will be accompanied by three panel discussions, two immersive visual arts experiences, a collaborative vernissage, and a closing concert. And to stay alive, you have to bounce back, from one situation to another, from a ballad to an oppressive ostinato, from a drone to a wandering melody. Together they compose a musical hide, with the help of a wild beast that scratches, protects, and stalks with its noise-ist see-saw. It’s jazz. But pop can be heard too, in the abundance of simple melodies that set the tone for the harmony. all. Sometimes noise breaks the line to plunge us into timbre. Emotion glides along sensation. The abstract intertwines with melodic riffs. Dialogues in counterpoint, collages of opposing energies that glide in suspended moments through arpeggios skimmed by the nimble fingers of the guitarist, while the clarinet weeps and lets us hear the humid sound of its mucous membranes. The drum kit overturns the groove to the extent that it scrambles and annihilates fixed pulsation. Space reigns, revealing a dark, silky night. ********** Français ********** FUR est joueur, car la vie c’est comme ça, rien n’est stable. Et pour rester vivant, il s’agit de rebondir, d’une situation à une autre, d’une ballade à un ostinato oppressant, d’un drone à une mélodie errante. Ils composent ensemble de la fourrure musicale à l’aide d’un fauve qui griffe, qui protège, qui traque avec ses mélodies à bascule bruitiste. C'est Jazz. Mais ça sent la Pop aussi, par l’abondance de mélodies simples qui donnent le ton à l’harmonie. La Noise vient parfois rompre la ligne pour nous plonger dans le timbre. L’émotion glisse le long de la sensation. L’abstrait s’immisce à l’intérieur de riffs mélodiques. Des dialogues en contrepoint, des collages d’énergies opposées qui glissent dans des moments suspendus par des arpèges effleurés par les doigts rapides du guitariste, tandis que la clarinette pleure et laisse entendre le bruit humide de ses muqueuses. La batterie, elle, fait chavirer le groove jusqu’à brouiller et anéantir les repères de pulsations. L’espace règne et laisse entrevoir une nuit sombre et soyeuse. ********** Nederlands ********** FUR is speels, want zo zit het leven nu eenmaal in elkaar: niks is stabiel. Wie in leven wil blijven, moet telkens weer opveren, van de ene situatie in de andere stuiteren, de ballade inruilen voor een beklemmend ostinato en de drone omwisselen voor de rondzwervende melodie. Samen vormen ze de muzikale pels van een roofdier dat klauwt, beschermt en de jacht inzet met zijn melodieën die flirten met de noise. Dit is jazz. Maar er zit ook een vleugje pop in, met dank aan de overvloed aan eenvoudige melodieën die de toon zetten voor de harmonie. Dat alles wordt soms doorbroken door een homp noise om ons onder te dompelen in het timbre. De emotie glijdt mee met het gevoel. Het abstracte baant zich een weg naar het hart van de melodische riffs. Dialogen als tegengewicht, collages van tegengestelde energieën die via de arpeggio’s van de vingervlugge gitarist overgaan in momenten die als het ware in de tijd zijn opgehangen, terwijl de klarinet huilt en het vochtige geluid van haar slijmvliezen laat horen. Het slagwerk laat dan weer de groove kapseizen, en vertroebelt en vernietigt de aanknopingspunten van de pulserende beat. De ruimte heerst en laat ons een glimp zien van een duistere en zijdezachte nacht.

"Ta Mavra Moura" is a three-piece band from Athens, Greece. While their repertoire is centered around Greek folk music of the twentieth century like the styles of rebetiko and laiko, their sound also touches upon more traditional flavors and even expands into modern areas like the compositions of Manos Hatzidakis and Nikos Xydakis. The band consists of bouzouki and guitar which is the basis of the urban folk sound of Athens during era of Rebetiko. A unique element of their music is the use of flute that while being unusual in such an orchestra, blends in perfectly and opens new horizons to their sound. Meanwhile, their three voices singing solo or in harmony complete their musical imagery. The two Canadians haven’t been making music together for very long, but their harmonious folk immediately caught on and in no time they were touring the US, Canada and Europe. (In 2022, they even played in AB as support act to Hollow Coves.) One of their tracks was also to be heard in the hugely popular series Grey’s Anatomy.Their soft, acoustic music is mainly about themes such as love and connecting with others. One review even described their music as “the aural equivalent of indigo painted skies and the first summer stars." ********** Français ********** Ocie Elliott, ce sont Jon Middleton et Sierra Lundy. Le duo canadien ne fait pas de la musique depuis très longtemps, mais son folk harmonieux a immédiatement fait mouche et les deux se sont rapidement mis à tourner aux États-Unis, au Canada et en Europe.
