3 BRDCST curators reveal their programmes

Anna von Hausswolff will present three artists close to her heart on the opening night. AvH’s musical talent has its roots in her childhood thanks to her father CM von Hausswolff. Swedish musician/composer Filip Leyman is a long-time AvH collaborator who appears on almost all her releases as producer, synth wizard or percussionist. A surprise addition is the Senegalese kora/percussion duo Lansana Sane x Malick Diebate who are resident in AvH’s birth city of Gothenburg.

The BRDCST weekend’s most explosive line-up is the brainchild of Zambian-Canadian rapper Backxwash. In her own words: “I’m incredibly excited about the lineup curated for BRDCST. The selection is challenging, disruptive, at times chaotic - but absolutely unforgettable. From the neoclassical hauntings of Morgan-Paige, who happens to be one of my favourite musicians and performers right now, to the digital hardcore brilliance of LustSickPuppy, one of my favourite acts of this generation. Just add to that the energetic chaos of Violent Magic Orchestra and the visionary artistry of Blackhaine!”

Saxophonist Colin Stetson is a familiar face at AB after six visits, but this is his first stint as curator. Interestingly, aside from his own set, Stetson will also appear as a guest or full-fledged musician on the other sets. The British Keeley Forsyth will demonstrate her soul-rending voice. 10¹⁷ is a brand-new project from Stetson, Norwegian guitarist Stian Westerhus and drummer/percussionist Erland Dahlen.

BRDCST BY NGHT in beursschouwburg

BRDCST recently embraced the night under the moniker BRDCST BY NIGHT. This year, we’re letting our colleagues at beursschouwburg take care of the entertainment for two consecutive nights of partying: On Friday 4 April, New York-based trio Kassie Krut will perform, followed by the producer El Kontessa from Cairo. On Saturday 5 April, Crop Top Core’s tribute to DJ Rashad will be the evening’s highlight. Also taking their place behind the turntables in tribute to DJ Rashad will be iced lattina from Brussels, and The Hague’s Guillermo Schuurman a.k.a. De Schuurman.

BRDCST in the Church of Notre Dame aux Riches Claires

For the second year in a row, BRDCST will take over the Church of Notre Dame aux Riches Claires. Lukas De Clerck, formerly known as Bloedneus & de Snuitkever, will kick things off. Fans of Hildur Guðnadóttir or Jóhann Jóhannsson will no doubt enjoy the work of Iranian composer/pianist Ava Rasti. She operates in the no man’s land between ambient, modern classical and drone. Organ builder Patrick Collon’s classical organ will this year be played by Irish experimental artist Áine O’Dwyer.

The next day, the Belgians take over the show. Kabas will celebrate its tenth anniversary with a brand-new album bathed in transcendental minimalistic improvisation. Abel Ghekiere will once again demonstrate the art of serene beauty with his latest album In de verte, dit uitzicht. Rounding things off is none other than Milan W., whose Leave Another Day was the pre-eminent Belgian album of 2024.

Sunday will highlight two exceptional Polish artists. Martyna Basta’s label Stroom introduced her as “Hints of Caroline Polachek and Eartheater’s gothy pop surround the experimental core reminiscent of HTRK and Arca.” Guitarist Raphael Rogiński has his album Plays John Coltrane to thank for his newfound cult following. The closing day’s most remarkable project will without a doubt be the performance of Hockets for Two Voices by the LA-based composer Meara O’Reilly. The evening is brought to a close in style with the Egyptian/Belgian The Handover.

BRDCST in Palace

BRDCST honours the classics! That’s why previous editions featured the influential krautrock legend CAN, and this year footwork pioneer DJ Rashad and jazz legend John Coltrane will be in the spotlight. DJ Rashad’s influence is unsurpassed. His heritage will be borne by Crop Top Core, which consists of members of SCHNTZL, Vieze Meisje, Brorlab and Fievel is Glacque. Guitarist Raphael Rogiński will present an esoteric tribute to John Coltrane.

BRDCST honours DJ Rashad, John Coltrane and the jazz label International Anthem

The most impressive jazz label in recent years is, without a shadow of the doubt, the Chicago-based International Anthem. BRDCST will celebrate this label with a mini-exhibition of their artwork and a handful of artists who epitomise the label’s soul. Cornet player Ben LaMar Gay released three albums under his own name via IA and was also present on Makaya McCraven’s Highly Rare and Jaimie Branch’s Fly or Die. SML is IA’s newest flagship, made up of key figures from the thriving LA jazz/improv/indie scene. Prominent SML member Jeremiah Chiu has a healthy obsession with (analogue and digital) synthesisers, and SML’s other members – percussionist Booker Stardrum and guitarist Gregory Uhlmann – will play an improv set that evening.

3 commissaires de BRDCST dévoilent leur programme

Lors de la soirée d’ouverture, Anna von Hausswolff viendra nous présenter trois artistes très proches d’elle. Ainsi, le sens de la musique d’AvH lui a été inculqué par son père, l’avant-gardiste CM von Hausswolff. Le musicien/compositeur suédois Filip Leyman travaille de longue date avec AvH et sa présence en tant que producteur, magicien du synthé ou percussionniste est audible sur à peu près tout ce qu’elle a sorti. Le choix le plus audacieux est le duo sénégalais de kora/percussions Lansana Sane x Malick Diebate, qui réside à Göteborg, la ville natale d'AvH.

Après six passages à l’AB, le saxophoniste Colin Stetson n’est plus un inconnu de la maison, mais il fait office de commissaire pour la première fois. Soulignons qu’outre son propre set, Stetson accompagnera chacun de ses artistes sur scène, en tant qu’invité ou que musicien à part entière. La voix de la chanteuse britannique Keeley Forsyth fait exploser les âmes. 10¹⁷ est le projet flambant neuf de Stetson, du guitariste norvégien Stian Westerhus et du batteur/percussionniste Erland Dahlen.

BRDCST BY NGHT au Beursschouwburg

Désormais, BRDCST s’emparera de la nuit sous le nom de BRDCST BY NGHT. Cette année, nous déménagerons le volet nocturne chez nos collègues du Beursschouwburg. Il s’agira de deux soirées festives consécutives : le vendredi 4 avril, les planches appartiendront au trio new-yorkais Kassie Krut et à la productrice cairote El Kontessa. Le samedi 5 avril, c’est l’hommage à DJ Rashad de Chicago par Crop Top Core qui occupera le devant de la scène. Toujours dans le même genre d’esprit que DJ Rashad, on retrouvera aux platines la bruxelloise iced lattina et Guillermo Schuurman, alias De Schuurman, qui nous vient de La Haye.

Le BRDCST à l’église Notre-Dame aux Riches Claires

Pour la deuxième année consécutive, BRDCST investira l’église Notre-Dame aux Riches Claires. C'est l’ancien Bloedneus & De Snuitkever Lukas De Clerck qui pourra y essuyer les plâtres. Les fans de Hildur Guðnadóttir ou Jóhann Jóhannsson apprécieront certainement l’œuvre de la compositrice/pianiste iranienne Ava Rasti. Elle agit en effet dans la même zone frontalière entre ambient, classique moderne et drone. C’est l’artiste irlandaise expérimentale Áine O'Dwyer qui fera sonner l’orgue classique du facteur d’orgue Patrick Collon cette année.

Le lendemain, ce sont les Belges qui mèneront la danse. Kabas fêtera ses 10 ans avec un tout nouvel album, qui baigne dans l’improvisation minimaliste transcendantale. Abel Ghekiere rendra à nouveau hommage à l’art de la splendeur tranquille avec son album tout chaud tout neuf In de verte, dit uitzicht. La tête d’affiche revient à juste titre à Milan W., qui nous a apporté le meilleur album belge de 2024 avec Leave Another Day.

Le dimanche fera la part belle à deux artistes polonais exceptionnels. Pour lancer Martyna Basta sur le marché, son label Stroom a dit : « des nuances de Caroline Polachek et de la pop gothique d’Eartheater entourent le cœur expérimental qui rappelle HTRK et Arca ». Le guitariste Raphael Rogiński plébiscité par ses fans pour son récent album Plays John Coltrane. Le projet le plus remarquable de cette journée de clôture sera sans aucun doute l'interprétation de Hockets for Two Voices de la compositrice Meara O’Reilly, venue de Los Angeles. Pour clôturer en beauté, nous ferons appel au projet belgo-égyptien The Handover.

BRDCST au Palace

Fort du vif succès remporté, BRDCST présentera cette année deux concerts cinématographiques en collaboration avec le Palace. Le compositeur, joueur de luth et guitariste néerlandais Jozef van Wissem dotera d’une nouvelle bande son le film d’horreur, français et muet, The Fall of the House of Usher (de 1928). Le saxophoniste belge Mattias De Craene (MDCIII et Nordmann), quant à lui, présentera une nouvelle bande son pour La Montagne sacrée, le film surréaliste financé par Allen Klein, le manager des Beatles.

BRDCST rend hommage à DJ Rashad, à John Coltrane et au label de jazz International Anthem

BRDCST rend hommage à ses classiques ! Lors des éditions précédentes, l’incontournable légende du krautrock CAN occupait le devant de la scène. Cette année, c’est au tour du pionnier du footwork DJ Rashad et de la légende du jazz John Coltrane d’être mis sous les feux de la rampe. L’influence du pionnier du footwork DJ Rashad reste inégalable. Son héritage sera remanié par Crop Top Core, un groupe composé de membres de SCHNTZL, Vieze Meisje, Brorlab et Fievel is Glaucque. Le guitariste Raphael Rogiński rendra hommage à John Coltrane de manière originale et décalée.

De Zweedse muzikant/componist Filip Leyman is haar longtime collaborator en te horen als producer, synth wizard of percussionist op zowat al haar releases. Meest verrassende keuze: het Senegalese kora/percussieduo Lansana Sane x Malick Diebate dat resideert in AvH’s geboortestad Göteborg.

Opmerkelijk: naast zijn eigen set zal Stetson telkens als gast of volwaardig muzikant aantreden. BRDCST BY NGHT in de Beursschouwburg

Recent dook BRDCST steeds de nacht in onder de noemer BRDCST BY NGHT. Dit jaar verkassen we met het nachtluik naar onze collega’s van de Beursschouwburg. En dat voor twee feestelijke avonden op rij: Op vrijdag 4 april speelt het New Yorkse trio Kassie Krut en de in Cairo residerende producer El Kontessa. Op zaterdag 5 april staat het eerbetoon aan Chicago’s wijlen DJ Rashad door Crop Top Core centraal. In de geest van diezelfde DJ Rashad nemen ook achter de draaitafels plaats: de Brusselse iced lattina en de Haagse De Schuurman.

BRDCST in de Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-ter-Rijke-Klarenkerk

Voor het tweede jaar op rij palmt BRDCST de Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-ter-Rijke-Klarenkerk in. (Ex-Bloedneus & De Snuitkever) Lukas De Clerck mag daarbij spits afbijten. Fans van Hildur Guðnadóttir of Jóhann Jóhannsson zullen het werk van de Iraanse componiste/pianiste Ava Rasti zeker kunnen smaken. Ze opereert namelijk eveneens op het grensvlak van ambient, modern klassiek en drone. Het klassieke orgel van orgelbouwer Patrick Collon eeuw wordt dit jaar bespeeld door de Ierse experimentele artieste Áine O'Dwyer.

Een dag later maken de Belgen het mooie weer. Zo viert Kabas zijn 10-jarig bestaan met een gloednieuw album dat baadt in transcendentale minimalistische improvisatie. Abel Ghekiere eert op zijn kersverse album In de verte, dit uitzicht opnieuw de kunst van verstilde pracht. Meer dan terechte afsluiter: Milan W. die met Leave Another Day dé Belgische plaat van 2024 afleverde.

Zondag staan twee uitzonderlijke Poolse artiesten centraal. Martyna Basta werd door haar label Stroom in de markt gezet als “Hints of Caroline Polachek and Eartheater’s gothy pop surround the experimental core reminiscent of HTRK and Arca”. Gitarist Raphael Rogiński heeft zijn cult following vooral te danken aan zijn album Plays John Coltrane. Het opmerkelijkste project op die slotdag wordt zondermeer de uitvoering van Hockets for Two Voices van de in LA residerende componiste Meara O’Reilly. Afsluiten in stijl doen we met het Egyptisch/Belgische The Handover.

Filmconcerten in Palace

Wegens succes presenteert BRDCST dit jaar zowaar twee filmconcerten in samenwerking met Palace. De Nederlandse componist, luitspeler en gitarist Jozef van Wissem zal de Franse stomme horrorfilm The Fall of the House of Usher (uit 1928) van een nieuwe soundtrack voorzien. De Belgische saxofonist Mattias De Craene (MDCIII en Nordmann) zal op zijn beurt de door de Beatles-manager Allen Klein gefinancierde surrealistische film The Holy Mountain van een nieuwe soundtrack voorzien.

BRDCST eert zijn klassiekers! Zo stond de afgelopen edities de invloedrijke krautrock legende CAN centraal, dit jaar is het - zoals eerder al vermeld - de beurt aan de nalatenschap van footwork pionier DJ Rashad en jazzlegende John Coltrane.
Het boeiendste jazzlabel van de jongste jaren is zonder meer het in Chicago gevestigde International Anthem. BRDCST viert het label met een mini-expo van hun artwork en met een handvol artiesten die mee de ziel uitmaken van het label. Kornettist Ben LaMar Gay bracht op IA drie albums uit onder eigen naam en was hij o.a. te horen op Makaya McCraven’s Highly Rare en Jaimie Branch’s Fly or Die. SML is IA’s gloednieuwe vlaggenschip bestaande uit sleutelfiguren uit de bloeiende LA-jazz/improv/indie-scene. Prominent SML-lid Jeremiah Chiu heeft een gezonde obsessie voor (zowel analoge als digitale) synthesizers en de andere SML-leden - percussionist Booker Stardrum en gitarist Gregory Uhlmann - spelen die avond een improv set.
