The planet is burning. What would Lucy, the three-million-year-old Australopithecus discovered in the Ethiopian desert in 1974, have to say? Here she is summoned to the heart of an immersive performance that questions the fantasy of our origins as well as our finiteness and our desire to transcend it. Somewhere between archaeology and future-oriented impulses. 

As the audience roams freely through a space transformed into an excavation site, a voice emerges, that of American soprano Claron McFadden, who conjures up Lucy and the fiction surrounding this ancestral figure: who would she be if she returned today, and how would she view the world we live in? Words, songs, gestures and movements, video footage, visual creations, sounds and music unfurl in a sensory constellation to create a vast metaphorical body. At stake: a history of humanity caught off guard by its own existence, torn between the awareness of its inevitable demise and the transhumanist desire to extend life indefinitely. 

Going back in time, superimposing and extending timelines. Summoning the past to question the present. Lighting the flame of a future that is searching for itself in a world whose end is constantly being predicted. This is the intention that drives the team of artists brought together by Jorge León, in a complex and invigorating collage of related artistic disciplines. Singer Claron McFadden, choreographer Simone Aughterlony, composer DJ Rokia Bamba as well as the writer Caroline Lamarche, performer Milka Kongi and eight other young performers work with the Brussels director and film-maker to articulate a dramaturgy of the fragmentary within a practice of the present moment.

La collision entre le rêve scientiste de se vivre immortel et l’extinction annoncée de l’humanité est le terrain embrasé à partir duquel Jorge León et une équipe d’artistes invité·es explorent les possibilités d’un devenir commun, dans une expérience déambulatoire où les médiums d’expression convergent pour brûler ensemble d’un autre feu.

La planète brûle. Que dirait Lucy, l’Australopithèque de 3 millions d’années découverte dans le désert éthiopien en 1974 ? La voici convoquée au cœur d’une création immersive qui questionne le fantasme de nos origines, interroge notre finitude et notre désir de la dépasser. Entre archéologie et élans prospectifs. 

Dans un espace transformé en champ de fouilles, les spectateur·ices sont invité·es à déambuler librement. Une voix surgit, celle de la soprano américaine Claron McFadden, qui convoque Lucy et la fiction autour de la figure ancestrale : qui serait-elle si elle revenait aujourd’hui ? Quel regard porterait-elle sur le monde dans lequel on vit ? Paroles, chants, gestes et mouvements, images vidéo, créations plastiques, sons et musiques se déploient en constellation sensorielle pour créer un grand corps métaphorique. En jeu : une histoire de l’humanité prise au dépourvu par sa propre existence, écartelée entre la conscience de sa disparition annoncée et l’obsession transhumaniste du prolongement infini de la vie. 

Remonter, superposer et prolonger les lignes du temps. Convoquer le passé pour questionner le présent. Allumer la flamme d’un avenir qui se cherche dans un monde dont on ne cesse d’annoncer la fin. C’est l’intention qui anime l’équipe d’artistes réunie par Jorge León, dans un puzzle complexe et vivifiant de disciplines artistiques sœurs. La chanteuse Claron McFadden, la chorégraphe Simone Aughterlony, la compositrice DJ Rokia Bamba, mais aussi l’écrivaine Caroline Lamarche, la performeuse Milka Kongi et huit autres jeunes performeur·ses inventent avec le metteur en scène et cinéaste bruxellois une dramaturgie du fragment et une pratique de l’instant présent.

De aarde staat in brand. Wat zou Lucy, de 3 miljoen jaar oude Australopithecus die in 1974 in de Ethiopische woestijn werd ontdekt, te zeggen hebben? Hier wordt ze opgeroepen tot het hart van een meeslepende voorstelling die de fantasie van onze oorsprong, onze eindigheid en ons verlangen om daaraan voorbij te gaan in vraag stelt. Ergens tussen archeologie en vooruitblikken. 

In een ruimte die is omgetoverd tot een opgravingsgebied worden toeschouwers*sters uitgenodigd om vrij rond te dwalen. Een stem dringt door, die van de Amerikaanse sopraan Claron McFadden, die Lucy en de fictie oproept rond deze ancestrale figuur: wie zou ze zijn als ze vandaag zou terugkeren, hoe zou ze de wereld waarin we leven zien? Woorden, gezangen, gebaren en bewegingen, videobeelden, visuele creaties, geluiden en muziek ontvouwen zich in een zintuiglijke constellatie om een groot metaforisch lichaam te vormen. Op het spel staat een geschiedenis van de mensheid die wordt verrast door haar eigen bestaan, verscheurd tussen het bewustzijn van haar voorspelde ondergang en de transhumanistische obsessie met oneindige levensexpansie. 

Terugkeren in de tijd, tijdslijnen overlappen en verlengen. Het verleden oproepen om het heden in vraag te stellen. De vlam aanwakkeren van een toekomst die op zoek is naar zichzelf in een wereld waarvan het einde steeds wordt voorspeld. Dit is de intentie die het team van artiesten, samengebracht door Jorge León, bezielt in een complexe en stimulerende puzzel van verwante artistieke disciplines.De zangeres Claron McFadden, de choreografe Simone Aughterlony, de componiste DJ Rokia Bamba, maar ook de schrijfster Caroline Lamarche, de performer Milka Kongi en acht andere jonge performers werken samen met de Brusselse regisseur en filmmaker aan een dramaturgie van het fragment en een praktijk van het huidige moment.
