Mixing Memory and Desire - inspired on Gerry Mulligan's music

Description

Mixing Memory and Desire originates from a project that JanWillem van der Ham started in 2014 to study the music of the Gerry Mulligan-Chet Baker Quartet from around 1950, the first group with two wind instruments, bass and drums, without a harmony instrument. This provides great harmonic freedom in the solos, while in the written material the lines for baritone saxophone and trumpet are very refined.

In the course of the project we have tried to add our own ideas to it with respect for the original pieces, always starting from what the pieces offer. In 2017 a CD with the results of this was released (see link below).

This quartet’s second cd, containing only original compositions, is a further development based on the inspiration drawn from studying the music of the Gerry Mulligan-Chet Baker Quartett. The aim is for musical diversity, with specific ways of improvising for each piece.
