Guy de Malherbe - 'Pierres d’attente'

One thinks of the “dream stones” so present in Chinese culture, which for the scholars become the passage to poetry and travel. The title of the exhibition also refers to these protruding stones, which are placed from space to space at the end of a wall, so as to be able to link up with a later construction. In this way, Guy de Malherbe’s paintings and the forms found therein cannot be read in open book: they form a bridge towards a meaning to be constructed by the visitor, towards a subtext where the symbolic and the unconscious mingle. Each canvas also functions as a stone of expectation, leading by rebound from one to the other, whether from a rock to a landscape or to a shell which would in turn become a cliff or a precipice.

Guy de Malherbe takes his inspiration here by the sea or in front of a beautiful plate of oysters, which he then interprets freely to immerse himself entirely in the pleasure of materials and colours, giving a very contemporary interpretation of these great subjects of art history.

On pense à ces « Pierres de rêves » si présentes dans la culture chinoises, qui deviennent pour les lettrés le passage vers la poésie et le voyage. Le titre de l’exposition fait aussi référence à ces pierres saillantes ménagées d’espace en espace, au bout d’un mur, de manière à pouvoir faire liaison avec une construction ultérieure. Ainsi, les toiles de Guy de Malherbe et les formes qu’on y trouve ne se lisent-elles pas à livre ouvert : elles forment un pont vers un sens à construire par le visiteur, vers un sous-texte où se mêlent le symbolique et l’inconscient. Chaque toile fonctionnant aussi comme des pierres d’attentes, menant par rebond de l’une à l’autre, que ce soit d’un rocher vers un paysage ou vers un coquillage qui deviendrait à son tour une falaise ou un précipice.

Guy de Malherbe prend ici son inspiration au bord de la mer ou devant une belle assiette d’huîtres, qu’il interprète ensuite librement pour se plonger tout entier dans le plaisir des matières et des couleurs, donnant une interprétation très contemporaine de ces grands sujets de l’histoire de l’art.

De titel van de tentoonstelling verwijst ook naar deze uitstekende stenen die aan het einde van een muur van ruimte tot ruimte worden geplaatst, zodat ze kunnen worden verbonden met een latere constructie. Op die manier kunnen de schilderijen van Guy de Malherbe en de daarin gevonden vormen niet in een open boek worden gelezen: ze vormen een brug naar een betekenis die door de bezoeker moet worden geconstrueerd, naar een subtekst waar het symbolische en het onbewuste zich vermengen. Elk doek fungeert ook als een verwachtingssteen, die door terugkaatsing van het ene naar het andere leidt, hetzij van een rots naar een landschap of naar een schelp die op zijn beurt een klif of een afgrond wordt.
