Where do the worlds of haute couture and football intersect? For the Art + People festival, our resident Ahilan Ratnamohan brings these two (Brussels-based) communities together. Just as in the performances Klapping and Le Maillot - One Size Fits All, the performance artist here departs from the context of theatre and scrutinises the world of fashion and design.There are applause from the VIP grandstand, flashing photo cameras and an array of grandiose costumes. Football x Fashion effortlessly mimics a fabulous runway and the show proves to be anything but superficial. Between the thumping beats, Ratnamohan winks critically towards the dubious ethics of sports giants like Nike, Adidas or Puma. All the models here are footballers, and the fashion consists of upcycled football kits with a high DIY content, made by designers with different skill levels. Ratnamohan seeks an answer to the question ‘who gets to participate in these two worlds, and who should be benched?' • Ahilan Ratnamohan creates cross-disciplinary performances in collaboration with non-classically trained performers. After attempting a professional football career in Europe, he has focused on performing arts since 2007, first in Sydney and later from Antwerp.With sport and language learning as his main interests, he is developing three trajectories in his practice: research into the choreography of football; research into the performativity of language lessons; and collaboration with the Star Boy Collective. Ratnamohan is currently Kaaitheater artist-in-residence.

Où se rencontrent les mondes de la haute couture et du football ? Dans le cadre du festival Art + People, l’artiste en résidence Ahilan Ratnamohan réunit ces deux communautés (bruxelloises). Comme dans les performances Klapping et Le Maillot - One Size Fits All, l'artiste part du contexte théâtral pour scruter le monde de la mode et du design.Applaudissements depuis la tribune VIP, flashs d'appareils photo et costumes grandioses : Football x Fashion imite sans effort un fabuleux défilé de mode. Le spectacle n’a pourtant rien de superficiel. Entre les martèlements des beats, Ratnamohan adresse en effet un clin d'œil critique à l'éthique douteuse des géants du sport comme Nike, Adidas ou Puma. Tous les mannequins sont des footballeur·euses et la mode se compose de kits de football recyclés, fabriqués par des stylistes de tous niveaux. Ratnamohan cherche ainsi à répondre à la question suivante : qui peut concourir dans ces deux mondes, et qui devrait être mis sur le banc de touche ? • Ahilan Ratnamohan crée des spectacles interdisciplinaires en collaboration avec des artistes n'ayant pas reçu de formation classique. Après avoir tenté une carrière de footballeur professionnel en Europe, il se concentre depuis 2007 sur les arts de la scène, dans un premier temps à Sydney, puis à Anvers.Le sport et l'apprentissage des langues étant ses principaux centres d'intérêt, il développe trois trajectoires dans sa pratique : une recherche sur la chorégraphie du football, une recherche sur la performativité des cours de langues et une collaboration avec le Star Boy Collective. Ratnamohan est actuellement artiste en résidence au Kaaitheater.

Waar raken de werelden van haute couture en voetbal elkaar? In het kader van het festival Art + People, brengt artist in residence Ahilan Ratnamohan deze twee (Brusselse) communities samen. Net als in performances Klapping en Le Maillot - One Size Fits All, start de performancekunstenaar vanuit de theatercontext om de mode- en designwereld onder de loep te nemen.Applaus uit de VIP-tribune, flitsende fotocamera’s en een waaier aan grandioze kostuums: Football x Fashion bootst moeiteloos een fabuleuze runway na. Oppervlakkig blijkt de show allerminst. Want tussen de bonzende beats knipoogt Ratnamohan kritisch richting de dubieuze ethiek van sportgiganten als Nike, Adidas of Puma. Alle modellen zijn hier voetballers, en de fashion bestaat uit geüpcyclede voetbaltenues met een hoog DIY-gehalte, gemaakt door ontwerpers van elk niveau. Zo zoekt Ratnamohan een antwoord op de vraag: wie mag meedoen in deze twee werelden, en wie moet op de bank? • Ahilan Ratnamohan maakt interdisciplinaire voorstellingen in samenwerking met niet-klassiek geschoolde performers. Na een poging tot een professionele voetbalcarrière in Europa, richt hij zich sinds 2007 op podiumkunsten, eerst in Sydney en later vanuit Antwerpen. Met sport en taalleerprocessen als grootste interesses, ontwikkelt hij drie trajecten in zijn praktijk: onderzoek naar de choreografie van voetbal, onderzoek naar de performativiteit van taallessen en de samenwerking met het Star Boy Collective. Ratnamohan is momenteel Kaaitheater artist in residence.
