WORKSHOP - Get Out of Your Head
05april
14:00 - 17:00
Nieuwe Achtergracht 170, 1018 WV Amsterdam, Netherlands
Description
Taught by Richard Jones.
Do you often feel nervous before an improv class, show or other kind of performance?
Have you ever felt confused, frozen or indecisive on stage or in a scene?
Have you found yourself waiting in the wings but held yourself back until the ‘perfect moment’?
We’re often told that the solution in all these situations is to get out of your head. But how?
As a somatic coach, improviser and musician, Richard discovered that the most powerful way to do this is to move his attention away from his thoughts and towards his body. He learned that by tapping into your sensations and emotional responses you can quieten the overthinking that leaves you feeling frozen or confused on stage. And not only that, you can also:
- employ more emotional range in your scenes
- embody more believable and engaging characters (or just become more powerfully you)
- acquire the confidence to make bolder offers and choices
Come and explore somatic techniques in this unique and powerful workshop. The workshop will be focussed primarily on applying the techniques to improv but they can also be employed in a huge variety of settings in life and work including artistic performances, speeches, meetings and interviews.
Over the course of the workshop you will:
- learn embodied practices you can use straight away to start feeling more confident on stage
- play some fun games and scenes to put them into practice; and
- gain tools and strategies to build your somatic awareness, allowing you to get out of your head and into your body more quickly in the future.
Richard Jones is an improviser, musician and somatic coach, based in London, UK. He has trained with UK-based improv schools such as AndAlso (Maydays), Hoopla and Showstopper and regularly performs shows as an improviser and as a pianist in London and beyond.
Richard classes himself as an introvert and more recently identifies as neurodiverse (ADHD and autism). He absolutely loves improvising and performing but the way he is wired creates a number of challenges for him. In particular, when he first started performing he felt very self-conscious and in his head a lot of the time and that held him back from showing up fully.
Richard realised that in order to follow his passion, he needed to up-skill. So, having coached performers and speakers since 2015, he expanded his skill set to include somatics so he could help both himself and his clients to show up with more confidence and impact. He now uses this discipline 1-2-1 and in groups to help them grow as performers or speakers.
