This exhibition traces the atypical trajectory of Belgian filmmaker, writer, and artist Chantal Akerman (Brussels 1950 - Paris 2015). From the very beginning in Brussels to the Mexican desert, from her very first films to her last installations in 2015. This is the first major exhibition on the Brussels-based artist, featuring unique and never-before-seen images, production, and working documents from her archive. Follow all the stages of her career through the years and places Akerman has traversed and filmed. She went there to work with media as diverse as film, television, text, and installation. Chantal Akerman was an inspiration to an entire generation. She remains a role model for a lot of directors and artists today. Expect a journey full of images and archives – from the burlesque to the tragic, from the intimacy of a bedroom to the desert. 
From March 15 to July 21, CINEMATEK organizes a complete retrospective of Chantal Akerman's cinematographic work, accompanied by a carte blanche of the films that were most important to her.A modified version of the exhibition will be presented at the Jeu de Paume, Paris from September 28, 2024, to January 19, 2025.

Cette exposition retrace le parcours atypique de la cinéaste, écrivaine et artiste belge Chantal Akerman (Bruxelles 1950 - Paris 2015). De ses débuts à Bruxelles au désert mexicain, de ses premiers films à ses dernières installations en 2015. Il s'agit de la première grande exposition consacrée à l'artiste bruxelloise, qui présentera des images et des documents de production et de travail uniques et inédits provenant de ses archives. Suivant les eŽtapes de sa carrie`re, cette exposition se propose de reparcourir les anneŽes et les lieux que Chantal Akerman a traversés et filmés tout en embrassant des médias aussi variés que le cinéma, la télévision, les écrits et l'installation. Chantal Akerman a été une source d'inspiration pour toute une génération. Elle reste aujourd’hui un modèle pour de nombreux réalisateurs et artistes. Attendez-vous à un voyage riche en images et archives - du burlesque au tragique, de l'intimité d'une chambre à coucher au désert. 
Du 15 mars au 21 juillet, CINEMATEK organise une rétrospective intégrale du travail cinématographique de Chantal Akerman, enrichie d’une sélection de titres qui furent marquants pour elle.Une adaptation de l'exposition sera présentée au Jeu de Paume, Paris du 28 septembre 2024 au 19 janvier 2025

Deze expo schetst het atypische parcours van de Belgische cineaste, schrijfster en kunstenares Chantal Akerman (Brussel 1950 - Parijs 2015). Van het prille begin in Brussel tot de Mexicaanse woestijn, van haar allereerste films tot haar laatste installaties in 2015. Dit is de eerste grote tentoonstelling over de Brusselse artieste, met unieke en nooit eerder vertoonde beelden, productie- en werkdocumenten uit haar archief. Je volgt alle etappes van haar carrière doorheen de jaren en plaatsen die Akerman heeft doorkruist en gefilmd. Ze ging er aan de slag met uiteenlopende media als film, televisie, tekst en installatie. Chantal Akerman was een inspiratie voor een hele generatie. Ze blijft een voorbeeld voor heel wat regisseurs en artiesten vandaag. Verwacht je aan een reis vol beelden en archieven – van het burleske tot het tragische, van de intimiteit van een slaapkamer tot de woestijn.
