Victoire Karera Kampire invites Maxime Jean-Baptiste

One of the new associated artists at Beursschouwburg is the Brussels based filmmaker Victoire Karera Kampire. She curates an evening with two films that both look in their own distinct way at the same part of the world: the Southern USA. While rooted in the banal day to day lives of their protagonists/witnesses, both films are haunted by the historical past of this region and its racial representations.

For the aftertalk Victoire is joined by another exciting voice from the cinema scene in Belgium-and-beyond, director and performer Maxime Jean-Baptiste.

Hale County This Morning, This Evening

(RaMell Ross, 2018, 1h 16min)
In the lives of protagonists Daniel and Quincy, quotidian moments and the surrounding southern landscape are given importance, drawing poetic comparisons between historical symbols and the African American banal. Images are woven together to replace narrative arcs with visual movements. Composed of intimate moments of people sharing a community, the film allows the viewer an emotive impression of the Southern USA - trumpeting the beauty of life and consequences of the social construction of race, while simultaneously a testament to dreaming.

(Chantal Akerman, 1999, 1h 11min)
An eclectic and edgy journey through the Southern USA after a Black man named James Byrd Jr. was gruesomely murdered by three white men. This is neither an anatomy of his murder nor the autopsy of James Byrd Jr., whose presence haunts the entire film, but rather an evocation of how this event fits into a landscape and climate both mentally and physically. Akermans lingering gaze unsettles the seemingly ordinary scenery, revealing the violent history that hides in the silence of the South.

Victoire Karera Kampire (1990) is a Rwandan-Belgian director and sound designer. She holds a Master's degree in New Media and Society (VUB), and is a graduate from LUCA School of Arts, in audiovisual arts. At the heart of her artistic quest, is the notion of absence, filling her films - places of hallucinated archives and experimentation at the border of documentary and fiction - with ghostly presences. Working and exploring beyond the single screen experience, she also creates video pieces for theater and for exhibition spaces, (« it is like a finger pointing a way to the moon » in collaboration with Moya Michael @ KVS-WIELS ; « Joy Boy, A tribute to Julius Eastman » in collaboration with Collectif Faire-Part, Fallon Mayanja et Mawena Yahouessi @ deSingel). In parallel to her filmmaking practice, Victoire Karera K. has worked as a documentary research assistant on Johan Grimonprez's last feature film “Soundtrack to a Coup d'Etat”, awarded at Sundance and nominated at the Oscars. She is currently working on a documentary project titled "Ejo", which was selected for the Doc Lab Montreal 2024 from the festival RIDM. And last but not least Victoire is currently one of the 2024–2025 associated artists right here at Beursschouwburg

L'une des nouveux·lles artistes associé·e·s du Beursschouwburg est la cinéaste bruxelloise Victoire Karera Kampire. Elle présente deux films qui abordent l'idée d'une présence fantomatique dans le cinéma et dans l'histoire, et ce dans une même région : le Sud historique des États-Unis et son passé violent.

Hale County This Morning, This Evening

Les personnages Daniel et Quincy évoluent au gré d'instants quotidiens et du paysage du Sud, dévoilant la poésie entre la symbolique de l'histoire et les lieux communs afro-américains. Le mouvement visuel, fait d'images tissées entre elles, remplace ici l'arc narratif. Composé de moments intimes entre les personnes d'une même communauté, le film offre un témoignage impressionniste du Sud historique des États-Unis, empreint de beauté, des conséquences des constructions raciales, toujours sur le mode du rêve.

Un voyage nerveux dans le Sud des États-Unis après l'assassinat d'un Noir nommé James Byrd Jr. par trois hommes blancs. Ni l'anatomie d'un meurtre ni l'autopsie de James Byrd Jr, dont la présence hante le film, le film se vit plutôt comme l'évocation d'un évènement qui se déroule dans un paysage à la fois mental et physique. Le regard persistant d'Akerman déstabilise le décor aux apparences ordinaires, et révèle l'histoire violente enfouie dans le silence du Sud.

Victoire Karera Kampire (1990) iest une réalisatrice et conceptrice sonore belgo-rwandaise. Elle est titulaire d'un master en nouveaux médias et société (VUB) et diplômée de la LUCA School of Arts en arts audiovisuels. Au cœur de sa quête artistique se trouve la notion d'absence, infusant ses films – lieux d'archives hallucinées et d'expérimentation à la frontière du documentaire et de la fiction – de présences fantomatiques. Travaillant et expérimentant au-delà de l'expérience de l'écran unique, elle crée également des pièces vidéo pour le théâtre et pour des espaces d'exposition (« it is like a finger pointing a way to the moon » en collaboration avec Moya Michael @KVS-WIELS ; « Joy Boy, A tribute to Julius Eastman » en collaboration avec le Collectif Faire-Part, Fallon Mayanja et Mawena Yahouessi @ deSingle). Parallèlement à sa pratique cinématographique, Victoire Karera K. a travaillé comme assistante de recherche documentaire sur le dernier long métrage de Johan Grimonprez, Soundtrack to a Coup d'Etat, récompensé à Sundance et nominé aux Oscars. Elle travaille actuellement sur un projet documentaire intitulé Ejo, qui a été sélectionné pour le Doc Lab Montréal 2024 du festival RIDM. Een van de nieuwe geassocieerde artiesten van Beursschouwburg is de Brusselse filmmaker Victoire Karera Kampire. Zij cureert een avond met twee films, die beide het idee van een spookachtige aanwezigheid in film en geschiedenis onderzoeken. Beide richten zich op dezelfde regio: het historische Zuiden van de Verenigde Staten en de gewelddadige geschiedenis ervan.

Voor het nagesprek krijgt Victoire het uitsekende gezelschap van nog een inspirerende stem uit de filmwereld van België-en-ver-daarbuiten, regisseur en performer Maxime Jean-Baptiste.

In het leven van de hoofdpersonen Daniel en Quincy krijgen alledaagse momenten en het omliggende zuidelijke landschap bijzondere betekenis. De film trekt poëtische vergelijkingen tussen historische symbolen en het banale bestaan van Afro-Amerikanen. Beelden worden samen geweven tot een visuele beweging in plaats van een traditionele verhaallijn. De film, bestaande uit intieme momenten van mensen die een gemeenschap delen, biedt de kijker een emotieve indruk van het historische Zuiden van de Verenigde Staten. Het verkondigt de schoonheid van het leven en de gevolgen van de sociale constructie van ras, terwijl het tegelijkertijd een getuigenis is van dromen.

Een eclectische en indringende reis door het Zuiden van de Verenigde Staten na de gruwelijke moord op een zwarte man genaamd James Byrd Jr., gepleegd door drie witte mannen. Dit is geen analyse van zijn moord, noch een autopsie van James Byrd Jr., wiens aanwezigheid de hele film blijft achtervolgen, maar eerder een bezwering van hoe deze gebeurtenis past in een landschap en klimaat, zowel mentaal als fysiek. Akermans langzame, observerende blik verstoort de ogenschijnlijk gewone omgeving en onthult de gewelddadige geschiedenis die verborgen ligt in de stilte van het Zuiden.
