"Body Language" by Joni Brown

Beschrijving

British artist Joni Brown examines themes around mental health and body image. She explores how objectification and culturally constructed beauty standards can shape our relationship with our bodies and evoke feelings of shame when we fall outside these ideals.

“I explore these ideas using words from personal conversations, text from psychology literature, instruction manuals, and British tabloid terminology."

Text and words are an important motif in brown's paintings. She takes words and phrases from popular culture and repositions them in a new context. In this way the words themselves become a visual representation of the conflict between reality and the aesthetic ideal.
