Post-residency concert: Razen (B.) & Guilhem All (Fr.) at Volta

In early March, Razen and turntablist Guilhem All, will head to Volta for a multi-day residency. They will also be recording a new album there that is to be released later this year on KRAAK. At the end of their residency, they will hold a showcase moment where their new work will be performed for the first time – and you can be there.RazenRazen has been around since 2010 and has released numerous albums on labels like KRAAK, Marionette, TAL and Hands In The Dark since then. If international interest in experimental music from Belgium has increased in recent years, then that is no doubt thanks to musical collectives like Razen. With their electro-folkloristic intensity and instrumentation they create music that is unique worldwide.Guilhem AllGuilhem All is an instinctive turntable artist from Brest, France, who has a unique and compelling way of working. With three turntables, self-made dubplates and everyday objects like paper and cardboard, he creates syncopated grooves and fuzzy drones. His approach is simple, yet profound: he leans over the turntables, where his discs – that he has found, composed, crushed or connected - spin.He interweaves the raw and tactile elements of sound. The result can put listeners into a hypnagogic trance. Guilhem is never pushy, he simply suggests and invites his audience into a world of subtle, complex soundscapes.This concert is organised by Volta and AB.

Avec trois platines, des dubplates maison et des objets du quotidien comme du papier et du carton, il crée des grooves syncopés et des drones vaporeux. Sa méthode est simple mais profonde : il se penche sur les platines où tournent des disques qu’il a trouvés, composés, écrasés ou reliés entre eux.Tissant des éléments sonores bruts et tactiles, il plonge ses auditeurs dans un état proche de la transe hypnagogique. Op het einde van de residentie houden ze een toonmoment waar ze het nieuwe werk zullen voorstellen en waar ook u kan bij zijn. Razen bestaat sinds 2010 en heeft sindsdien talrijke platen uitgebracht op labels als KRAAK, Marionette, TAL en Hands In The Dark. Als er de voorbije jaren internationaal meer interesse is ontstaan voor experimentele muziek uit België, dan is dat niet in het minst te danken aan muzikantencollectieven als Razen. Dankzij de electrofolkloristische intensiteit en instrumentatie, is de muziek van Razen wereldwijd vrij uniek. Guilhem All is een instinctieve turntable artist uit Brest, Frankrijk, wiens werkwijze zowel uniek als meeslepend is. Werkend met drie draaitafels, zelfgemaakte dubplates en een reeks kleine objecten zoals papier, karton en andere materialen, creëert hij syncopische grooves en vage drones. Zijn benadering is eenvoudig maar diepgaand—hij leunt over de draaitafels waar schijven die hij heeft gevonden, gecomponeerd, verpletterd of verbonden heeft, draaien. Hij weeft en verstrengelt de rauwe, tactiele elementen van geluid. Het resultaat kan luisteraars naar een hypnagogische trance leiden.
