Célébré pour ses interprétations limpides, le pianiste britannique consacre la quatrième et dernière partie de son cycle aux trois dernières sonates de ce compositeur emblématique. Elles évoquent une sorte de lassitude, sans issue, loin du triomphe que dégage Beethoven. Nous sommes en septembre 1828, et Franz Schubert sait qu'il va mourir. Il quitte la vie deux mois plus tard. Praised for his erudite transparency, the British pianist devotes the fourth and final part of his cycle to the last three sonatas of this emblematic composer. A stark resignation resounds in them, as if there is no way out – no triumph as in Beethoven’s music. Franz Schubert knew back then, in September 1828, that he was about to die. And he did two months later. In the last sonata, "Schubert writes something that comes from another planet," says Paul Lewis, "as though it’s, well, after all our troubles, this is what comes next."
