Bozar all over the P(a)lace - Nocturne February

For this February evening, Bozar is inviting the Brussels-based Afrocentric collective Som·m·e Of Us to come up with an artistic programme to echo the When We See Us exhibition. The evening also marks the launch of the 8th edition of the Afropolitan Festival.
This evening's theme is the collectives of artists and curators who, across Europe and its near neighbours, are bringing to life a certain notion of Black Joy. Among them: the Welsh dance collective Jukebox and the Swiss collective of multidisciplinary black artists OKRA (Akwasi Glenn & KA-RABA).
Performances
In spring 2024, Jukebox Collective presented Of Us, a film as part of Beyond the Bassline at the British Library in London, the first major exhibition to document the rich musical history of African and Caribbean people in Britain. This musical and choreographic film resonates particularly well with the theme of Black Joy, which runs through the When We See Us exhibition at Bozar. This nocturne presents a live version with five dancers from the collective, led by Liara Barussi.
A group of dancers from Brussels, invited by the Som.m.e Of Us collective, will enter into dialogue with selected works from the exhibition, while the Irish poet and performer FELISPEAKS, based in Brussels, will take visitors on a poetic journey through the exhibition.
Music
The Som.m.e Of Us collective has come up with a musical programme for the whole night, a combination of playlists devised by the JukeboxCollective - based on the film Of Us - and a DJ from OKRA's KA-RABA.
Films
Of Us pays tribute to the heritage of one of the UK's oldest black communities, located in Tiger Bay, Cardiff. Through dance and movement, he explores the themes of migration, identity and the enduring ancestral link between body and memory.
Everyday Blackness, introduced by its directo Akwasi Glenn, is a mesmerizing blend of sounds, voices, and polyrhythmic music and visuals, exploring everyday life from an Afro-diasporic perspective, narrated by Basel-based OKRA Collective and collaborators. At the basis of the work are conversations about navigating everchanging environments that feel increasingly tense, but also about communing and how to be genuinely and authentically present with each other.
Exhibitions
The When We See Us exhibition will remain open late into the night. Visitors can also take advantage of interpretation services in several languages, including sign language, provided by Bozar guides on the exhibition circuit.

Performances
Au printemps 2024, Jukebox Collective présentait Of Us, un film s'inscrivant dans Beyond the Bassline à la British Library à Londres, la première grande exposition à documenter le riche parcours musical des populations africaines et caribéennes en Grande-Bretagne. Ce film musical et chorégraphique résonne particulièrement avec le thème de Black Joy qui traverse l'exposition When We See Us à Bozar. Voor de nocturne van februari heeft Bozar het Brusselse Afrocentrische collectief Som·m·e Of Us uitgenodigd om een artistiek programma te creëren dat een weerspiegeling is van de tentoonstelling When We See Us. Deze avond is ook de start van de 8e editie van het Afropolitan Festival.
Alles staat in het teken van de collectieven van kunstenaars en curatoren die in Europa en de buurlanden de Black Joy tot leven proberen te brengen. Onder hen: het Welshe danscollectief Jukebox en het Zwitserse OKRA (Akwasi Glenn & KA-RABA), een gezelschap van multidisciplinaire zwarte kunstenaars.
Voorstellingen
In het voorjaar van 2024 presenteerde Jukebox Collective Of Us, een film die onderdeel vormde van de tentoonstelling Beyond the Bassline, in de British Library in Londen. Het was de eerste grote expo die de rijke muziekgeschiedenis van de Afrikaanse en Caraïbische bevolkingsgroepen in Groot-Brittannië belichtte. Deze muzikale en choreografische film sluit bijzonder goed aan bij het thema Black Joy, dat de rode draad vormt van de tentoonstelling When We See Us in Bozar. De nocturne brengt een live versie met vijf dansers van het collectief onder leiding van Liara Barussi.
Een groep Brusselse dansers, uitgenodigd door het collectief Som·m·e Of Us, gaat in dialoog met geselecteerde werken uit de tentoonstelling. Daarnaast neemt de in Brussel gevestigde Ierse dichter en performer FELISPEAKS de bezoekers mee op een poëtische wandeling door de tentoonstelling.

Of Us (2024) is een eerbetoon aan het erfgoed van een van de oudste zwarte gemeenschappen in het Verenigd Koninkrijk, gevestigd in Tiger Bay, Cardiff. Aan de hand van dans en beweging worden thema's verkend zoals migratie, identiteit en de van oudsher bestaande band tussen lichaam en geheugen.
Everyday Blackness (2024), ingeleid door de directeur Akwasi Glenn, is een betoverende mix van geluiden, stemmen, polyritmische muziek en visuals, die het dagelijks leven verkennen vanuit een Afro-diasporisch perspectief, verteld door OKRA Collectief uit Basel en hun medewerkers. De basis van het werk wordt gevormd door gesprekken over het omgaan met steeds veranderende omgevingen die steeds meer gespannen aanvoelen, maar ook over samenzijn en hoe je echt en authentiek aanwezig kunt zijn bij elkaar.
Tentoonstellingen
De tentoonstelling When We See Us blijft open tijdens de nocturne. Bezoekers kunnen op het parcours van de tentoonstelling een beroep doen op de gidsen van Bozar om te tolken in verschillende talen, waaronder gebarentaal.
