“I’ve always had aches and pains in my body. My knees, my ankles, my back. It’s a family thing. It’s crazy, right? Like, my white friends inherit sums of money, I inherit my grandmother’s heavy legs and compression stockings.”

In Exhibit A, Sihame Haddioui seeks to blend her family history with the Grand Narrative of History – from the intimate to the political. By putting the spotlight on marginalised bodies, the artist brings into question the mechanisms of oppression exerted on her body and those of her family members by the forces of capitalism, colonialism and the patriarchy.

With its evidential exhibits, Exhibit A takes the form of an upbeat trial not dissimilar to the cultural, systemic and structural diktats that weigh on our marginalised identities. A show that is powerful, tender and direct; part stand-up, part family documentary.

“J’ai toujours eu des douleurs au corps. Les genoux, les chevilles, le dos. C’est un truc de famille. C’est fou, non ? Genre mes potes blancs héritent de sommes d’argent, moi j’hérite des jambes lourdes et des bas de contention de ma grand-mère. »

Dans Exhibit A, Sihame Haddioui cherche à mêler son histoire familiale à la Grande Histoire - de l’intime au politique. En mettant la focale sur les corps invisibilisés, au moyen d'un dispositif d'écriture en direct au plateau, l’artiste questionne les mécanismes d’oppressions exercés sur son corps et celui des membres de sa famille, par le capitalisme, la colonisation et le patriarcat.

Avec ses pièces à conviction (exhibits), Exhibit A prend la forme d’un joyeux procès qui n‘est pas sans rappeler les injonctions culturelles, systémiques et structurelles qui pèsent sur nos identités invisibilisées. Un spectacle performance fort, tendre, direct, entre stand-up et documentaire familial.

In Exhibit A probeert Sihame Haddioui haar familiegeschiedenis te verweven met de wereldgeschiedenis - van het intieme tot het politieke. Door te focussen op onzichtbaar gemaakte lichamen stelt de artieste de onderdrukkingsmechanismen in vraag die het kapitalisme, de kolonisatie en het patriarchaat uitoefenen op haar eigen lichaam en dat van haar familieleden.

Met haar bewijsstukken (exhibits) neemt Exhibit A de vorm aan van een vrolijk proces dat doet denken aan de culturele, systemische en structurele bevelen die wegen op onze onzichtbaar gemaakte identiteiten. Een krachtige, tedere en directe voorstelling, ergens tussen stand-up en familiedocumentaire in.
