BANAD Festival - Old England - Musical Instruments Museum

In the upper reaches of the Mont-des-Arts, the Old England building is one of the most remarkable examples of Brussels Art Nouveau. The fabric store of the same name commissioned the building from the architect Paul Saintenoy in 1898. Its seven-story structure, made entirely of metal and glass, a technical feat and the first of its kind in the country, made its mark both on the people who saw it and the capital city as such. The building remained in use as a store until 1974, before being bought by the state in 1979 as a home for the Musical Instruments Museum following restoration in the early 1990s. The guided visit of Old England also gives you access to the Museum.

Implanté dans la partie haute du Mont-des-Arts, le bâtiment "Old England" compte parmi les exemples les plus remarquables de l'Art nouveau bruxellois. Commandé en 1898 par les magasins de tissus éponymes à l'architecte Paul Saintenoy, cet édifice et son architecture entièrement métallique marqueront durablement tant les esprits que le paysage de la Capitale. La structure apparente de fer et de verre soutient les sept étages, et constitue une prouesse technique, la première du Royaume. L'immeuble garde la même affectation jusqu'en 1974 et est racheté par l'Etat en 1979, dans le but d'y installer le Musée des Instruments de Musique, après une campagne de restauration au début des années 1990.
