The first joint exhibition of Hungarian artist, Árpád Forgó and Brussels-based ceramic artist Abel Jallais takes place at the Front Gallery of Liszt Institute, Brussels as an official off program of Art Brussels international contemporary art fair. At the exhibition, through unusual constellations, Forgó’s delicate shaped canvas compositions get in dialogue with the monochrome ceramic objects of Abel Jallais. Despite of working with different medium, their approach and processes share several similarities. They create non-representational objects, which do not intend to generate direct associations; the content of the work is its colour, shape, texture, size and scale. Both artists developed his own basic forms, from which they build the artworks: Jallais is using additions, cut-outs and repetition in his “Bonbonne” series; Forgó is applying different reflection methods, as well as shifting. They create simple and visually controllable pieces that need to be observed and discovered. Árpád Forgó works with basic geometric forms and through isometric transformations; he builds shaped canvas compositions, visualising structures, shapes, measurements and rhythm, as well as planar and spatial relationships. He developed shaped canvas modules in order to build block-like or hollow, symmetrical or asymmetrical compositions. In the recent years, he experiments intensively with different compound painting processes in order to challenge the viewer’s perception not only by the structure but also by the material. Abel Jallais has an attraction to facing unknown objects; therefore, he peals off the functional territories of the archaic objects and transforms them into a free form of interpretation. They become a fictional territory again to explore, offering the opportunity to the passive user to open a new dialogue with the form. Sighing with the eyes, turning around, manipulating to return to a primitive form of primitive apprehension. His practice moves in this interstice. The fictional sense becomes the functional sense. Both artists work with traditional materials, aiming for industrial perfection, still keeping the craftsmanship of the process. Árpád Forgó is a Budapest-based artist. After graduating, he soon started to focus on geometric abstraction and made paintings with tactile feature. He has always been interested in the periphery of painting and sculpture. Since 2015, he creates shaped canvas works and modular compositions. He has exhibited widely, including solos shows at Anya Tish Gallery in Houston; Schlieder Contemporary in Frankfurt; Viltin Gallery, Budapest and Rómer Flóris Museum of Art and History in Győr, Hungary. He has participated in group shows at Ludwig Museum and Vasarely Museum in Budapest and the Museum Ritter in Waldenbuch, Germany. Artist residency programs play an important role in the artist’s career, he was invited to Norway, Australia, Spain, and several times to the United States. For 2019-2020, he was awarded The Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant. Abel Jallais is a French-born ceramic artist living and working in Brussels. After his studies at the College of Fine Arts in Angers, where he concentrated on sculpture and drawing, he spent a year in Colombia, where he did an internship at Campo de Gutierrez artist residency centre, where ceramics played a major role. He had already been working with clay since his teenage years, and this experience strengthened his desire to explore this material further. On his return to Europe, he joined the master’s programme in ceramics at La Cambre National College of Visual Arts in Brussels, graduating in 2018. Since then, he has divided his time between his art practice at Espace Triphasé art studio and his work as a teacher at the Brussels Art Academy and as a teaching assistant at the ceramics department at La Cambre. His works have been exhibited at numerous galleries and art spaces in Brussels, including Galerie Cohérent, Musée du Cinquantenaire, Puls Ceramics Gallery and Espace La Vallée, as well as at international ceramics platforms in Belgium, The Netherlands and France. /// Curator: Gábor Pintér

********** English ********** GLUON presents Checkin’ Each Other Out, an artistic project by Belgian artist Jerry Galle. The show is the first exhibition in a series showcasing the results of Gluon’s residency collaboration and focuses on Galle’s most recent work, developed during a residency at Belgian research centre Flanders Make, hosted by Gluon. On Saturday 20 April, we will open the expo with a keynote by Darian Meacham (technology philosopher) and panel discussion with Jerry Galle and Marc Engels (COO Flanders Make). Welcome! Checkin’ Each Other Out is a project that questions our understanding of `intelligence’. Through interaction between humans, robots and living organisms, Galle aims to explore alternative forms of intelligence to suggest a broader spectrum of `smart’. Artificial intelligence (AI) constitutes one of these emerging intelligences. At the same time, there is also growing recognition of non-human intelligences in other living organisms such as octopuses and mycelium, which exhibit unique forms of ‘intelligence’. To encourage a shift in perspective, Galle suggests to embrace new approaches that recognise the complexity of intelligence in all its forms. According to Galle, it is crucial to consider robots and artificial intelligence not merely as subordinate entities, but as autonomous subjects. Should we emphasize fostering collaboration and promoting a sense of shared agency and mutual commitment? It is essential to ask questions that explore subjective experiences; such as “What is it like to be you?” rather than sticking to the comparative, binary question “Are you like us?”. Naar aanleiding van het Jetse Artiestenparcours d’Artistes nodigen we je uit om mee te kijken door de ogen van jonge filmmakers. Yto Vanfleteren studeert regie aan het RITC School of Arts. In de jeugdzaal van GC Essegem bouwt ze een videoruimte waar ze eigen werk en dat van vrienden voor de eerste keer vertoont. In de feestzaal kan je kijken naar het werk van Marina Kalleny. Deze Egyptische documentairemaakster is geboren en opgegroeid in Caïro, maar woont sinds twee jaar in Jette. Ze behaalde haar master bij Docnomads, een prestigieus Erasmusprogramma in Portugal, Hongarije en België. Door haar lens duikt ze in de ingewikkelde lagen van persoonlijke en collectieve herinneringen, op zoek naar de link tussen mens en natuur. Met het geheugen en transformatie als centrale thema’s verkent ze de onvatbaarheid van tijd en de diepgaande connecties tussen verleden, heden en toekomst. Gedurende het hele weekend van Artiestenparcours d'Artistes is Taverne Ter Linden geopend. Daar hangt werk van de Iraanse Sara Aref. Sara studeerde beeldende kunst aan de Brera Academie in Milaan, Italië, en woont en werkt momenteel in Brussel. Ze is enthousiast over kleuren, bewegingen, de natuur en licht. Geïnspireerd door Perzische miniaturen, die omwille van de verschillende kleurschakeringen haast muzikaal zijn, maakt ze originele kunstwerken waarin ze haar gevoelens uitdrukt in een abstracte vorm.

********** English ********** From 25 April to 5 May, Brussels will be all about contemporary jewellery! For its second edition, the Brussels Jewellery Week brings together established and emerging artists, collectors and an international audience. Brussels Jewellery Week aims to highlight contemporary jewellery as a creative and innovative craft. In addition to the main exhibition at MAD Brussels, tours, lectures and workshops will be organised at various locations around the city. PARTICLE[S] In physics, "elementary particles" are the smallest elements that form the matter and forces of the universe: in constant motion, these small entities are capable, by fusion, of forming large ensembles, thus forming the basis of all creation and transformation. In grammar, a particle is a small unchanging element: fixed, unassuming, it inflects the meaning of a word by connecting with it. The concept of PARTICLE[S] can be approached from a purely scientific or technical standpoint. But it can also be seen, in a world threatened by pollution, as a metaphor for many human interactions that ultimately form a critical mass. In the world of contemporary jewelry, we see that each material consists of the same tiny particles that together, in subtle arrangements, form a work of art. ********** Français ********** Du 25 avril au 5 mai, Bruxelles se met à l'heure du bijou contemporain ! La capitale européenne réunit des artistes établis et émergents, des collectionneurs et un public international pour la deuxième édition de la Brussels Jewellery Week. Pour rappel, la première édition a eu lieu en 2022, avec l'exposition principale "In Fieri" au MAD Brussels. La Brussels Jewellery Week vise à mettre en valeur le bijou contemporain en tant qu'artisanat créatif et innovant. En plus de l'exposition principale au MAD Brussels, des visites guidées, des conférences et des ateliers seront organisés à travers toute la ville. PARTICLE[S] En physique, les "particules élémentaires" sont les plus petits éléments qui forment la matière et les forces de l'univers : en mouvement constant, ces petites entités sont capables, par fusion, de former de grands ensembles, à la base de toute création et transformation. En grammaire, une particule est un petit élément immuable : fixe, discrète, elle infléchit le sens d'un mot en se liant à lui. Le concept de PARTICULE[S] peut être abordé d'un point de vue purement scientifique ou technique. Naast de hoofdtentoonstelling bij MAD Brussels worden er rondleidingen, lezingen en workshops georganiseerd op verschillende locaties in de stad. PARTICLE[S] In de fysica zijn 'elementaire deeltjes' de kleinste elementen waaruit de materie en de krachten van het universum bestaan: in voortdurende beweging zijn deze kleine lichamen in staat om, door samensmelting, grote ensembles te vormen en zo de basis te vormen van alle schepping en transformatie. In de grammatica is een deeltje een klein onveranderlijk element: vast, bescheiden, het verbuigt de betekenis van een woord door zich ermee te verbinden. Het begrip PARTICLE[S] kan benaderd worden vanuit een puur wetenschappelijk of technisch standpunt. Maar het kan ook gezien worden, in een wereld die bedreigd wordt door vervuiling, als een metafoor voor vele menselijke interacties die uiteindelijk een kritische massa vormen. In de wereld van de hedendaagse juwelen zien we dat elk materiaal bestaat uit dezelfde kleine deeltjes die samen, in subtiele ordeningen, een kunstwerk vormen.

Molenbeek-Saint-Jean|Exposition
********** English ********** In this exhibition, K-Dix 80 presents works based on elements that are not, or are no longer, visible in the cemetery. The best example of this is the barrier built by Horta around the tomb, but which has since been lost and of which no representation seems to be available. K-Dix80 wanted to recreate the barrier by drawing on the contemporary collective imagination, and to do so he commissioned artificial intelligence software to reconstitute it. His many unexpected proposals are revealed, as the shadow of one of these virtual barriers is painted on the floor and wall. Other elements evoke the negative of the intervention in the public space, such as the original paving stones replaced by those sculpted by K-Dix80, or the offcuts of the corten steel plates that reproduce the decorative elements sculpted by Horta on the tomb of the Cressonnières family. Emphasis is also placed on the context of the tomb, which stands next to more modest buildings destined to disappear, like those they housed. Various photographic approaches pay tribute to these people in the shadows. ********** Français ********** Dans cette exposition, K-Dix80 présente des œuvres conçues à partir d’éléments qui ne sont pas ou plus visibles au cimetière. K-Dix80 a voulu recréer la barrière en puisant dans l’imaginaire collectif contemporain, et pour ce faire il a chargé un logiciel d’intelligence artificielle de la reconstituer. Ses nombreuses propositions, pour le moins inattendues, sont dévoilées, alors que l’ombre d’une de ces barrières virtuelles est peinte au sol et sur le mur. D’autres éléments évoquent le négatif de l’intervention dans l’espace public, comme les pavés d’origine remplacés par ceux sculptés par K-Dix80 ou les chutes des plaques d’acier corten qui reprennent les éléments décoratifs sculptés par Horta sur la tombe de la famille des Cressonnières. Un accent est aussi mis sur le contexte de la tombe, voisine d’édifices plus modestes, destinés à disparaître, comme celles et ceux qu’ils abritaient. Diverses approches photographiques rendent hommage à ces personnes de l’ombre. ********** Nederlands ********** In deze tentoonstelling presenteert K-Dix80 werken gebaseerd op elementen die niet of niet meer zichtbaar zijn op de begraafplaats. Het beste voorbeeld hiervan is de barrière die Horta rond het graf bouwde, maar die sindsdien verloren is gegaan en waarvan geen representatie beschikbaar lijkt te zijn. K-Dix80 wilde de barrière herscheppen door te putten uit de hedendaagse collectieve verbeelding en om dat te doen gaf hij kunstmatige intelligentiesoftware de opdracht om de barrière te reconstrueren. Zijn vele onverwachte voorstellen worden onthuld als de schaduw van een van deze virtuele barrières op de vloer en de muur wordt geschilderd. Andere elementen roepen het negatieve van de interventie in de openbare ruimte op, zoals de originele straatstenen die zijn vervangen door de stenen die door K-Dix80 zijn gebeeldhouwd, of de afsnijdingen van de cortenstalen platen die de decoratieve elementen reproduceren die Horta op het graf van de familie Cressonnières heeft gebeeldhouwd. De nadruk wordt ook gelegd op de context van de tombe, die naast bescheidener gebouwen staat die voorbestemd zijn om te verdwijnen, net als de gebouwen die ze herbergden. Verschillende fotografische benaderingen brengen hulde aan deze mensen in de schaduw.

Lors de l'exposition de Éric Luc MAQUET, Envol onirique, du 29/03 au 4/05 à la galerie Marc Minjauw à Bruxelles, le week-end du 20 et du 21 avril, Éric Luc MAQUET sera présent à la galerie les deux jours de 15H à 18H pour rencontrer les visiteurs et les collectionneurs et partager avec eux, le verre de l’amitié.
