Bien que protéiforme, l’œuvre du bruxellois Bob Verschueren témoigne d’une
profonde cohérence. Son parcours artistique se développe en ramifications,
chaque nouveau travail annonce le prochain et se fait l’écho des créations
précédentes. Dès 1978, il abandonne son atelier de peintre pour réaliser les
Wind Paintings, œuvres conçues en extérieur à partir de pigments naturels
répandus au vent dans le paysage. De ce tournant décisif naît son intérêt pour
la nature et le végétal en particulier. Depuis, Bob Verschueren a réalisé plus
de 280 installations en Europe et dans le monde. Il utilise les éléments de la
nature comme moyen d’expression. À partir de végétaux issus du lieu investi, il
transforme arbres, branches, feuilles en sculptures spectaculaires, évoquant à
la fois la splendeur et la déliquescence de toute chose vivante. Chaque pièce
poursuivant une réflexion à la fois sur l’homme, sa vie, sa mort, et sur le lien
que ce dernier entretient avec son environnement naturel. “Chacune a valeur de
métaphore et non de symbole. « Je ne souhaite pas encapsuler mes installations
dans des lectures obligées, univoques. Je préfère les garder ouvertes à la
lecture de chacun, avec sa propre sensibilité, ses propres acquis. Je cherche à
ce qu’elles aient un caractère événementiel. Lorsqu’une installation entre en
résonance avec le lieu qui l’accueille, elle se pose alors comme une évidence,
établissant une tension entre l’intemporel de la proposition et son caractère
éphémère », précise l’artiste. Il explore d’autres domaines tels que le son
(Catalogue de plantes débuté en 1995), les phytogravures (débutées en 1999), la
photographie et les frottages deviennent aussi l’objet de ses investigations.
Pour certaines de ses installations sonores, Bob Verschueren y insère des textes
poétiques de Dominique Sintobin avec laquelle il collabore depuis 2005. Pour
notre édition Rise, Bob Verschueren nous offre à voir et à entendre tous les
aspects de son art laissant le végétal prendre toute sa place dans Flagey le
temps du Festival.

The work of Bob Verschueren, from Brussels, is protean yet deeply coherent. His

across the landscape. It was from this decisive turning point that his interest
in nature, and in plants in particular, was born. Since then, Bob Verschueren
has created over 280 installations in Europe and around the world. He uses the
elements of nature as a means of expression. He transforms trees, branches and
leaves into spectacular sculptures, evoking both the splendour and the decay of
all living things. Each piece reflects on man, his life and death, and his
relationship with his natural environment. "Each is a metaphor, not a symbol. "I
don't want to encapsulate my installations in obligatory, univocal readings. I
prefer to keep them open to the reading of each individual, with his or her own
sensibility and background. I want them to have an event-driven character. When
an installation resonates with the place in which it is installed, it becomes
self-evident, establishing a tension between the timelessness of the proposition
and its ephemeral nature," explains the artist. He has also explored other
fields, such as sound (Catalogue de plantes, begun in 1995), phytogravures
(begun in 1999), photography and rubbings. For some of his sound installations,
Bob Verschueren inserts poetic texts by Dominique Sintobin, with whom he has
collaborated since 2005. For this year's Rise Festival, Bob Verschueren will be
offering us the chance to see and hear all the aspects of his art, with plants
taking pride of place in Flagey for the duration of the Festival.

duchesse est vite contestée par ses opposants. Tant à l’intérieur qu’à
l’extérieur de ses territoires.
En interne, Marie et ses partisans font face à des groupes d’intérêts nobles et
urbains voulant redéfinir l’équilibre des pouvoirs. En externe, ils sont mis
sous pression par les ambitions territoriales du roi de France. Ce dernier
envahit les deux Bourgognes et les Anciens Pays-Bas. Marie est donc contrainte
de défendre sa légitimité par les armes mais aussi par la parole et l’image.
Jonathan Dumont est docteur en histoire, art et archéologie. Ses travaux se
concentrent sur l’histoire politique et l’histoire des cultures politiques dans
l’Europe tardo-médiévale et renaissante. Principalement en France, dans les
Anciens Pays-Bas et dans la Monarchie des Habsbourg. Il est actuellement
Research Fellow/Mitarbeiter à l’Institut für Mittelalterforschung de
l’Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften à Vienne.

d’humilité et de maturité: aucun.e artiste graphique ne voit son style lui
tomber du ciel, il est la résultante d’une infinité d’informations accumulées et
régurgitées sous d’autres formes et qu’ielle fait rentrer en résonance avec sa
propre histoire et ses engagements. Mais pour choisir la bonne voie et le bon
matériel à plagier nous devons être à l’écoute de notre instinct.
C’est une poursuite de l’excitation profonde que produisent chez nous certaines
formes, certaines couleurs, certaines compositions. Une attention particulière

‘The honest finder’ is set in Flemish Kempen in the late 1990s. Jimmy, who is
going through a difficult time at home, completely revives when the son of a
family of Kosovar refugees comes to sit next to him in class. Jimmy is the
smartest but also loneliest in his class. He sees it as his mission to help
Tristan Ibrahimi through the school year. All the time he doesn't spend
collecting flippos, he spends with the Kosovar family. When the Ibrahimis are
suddenly deported after a year, Tristan comes up with a plan that will demand a
lot from Jimmy.

National Poet in Belgium, Lisette Lombé, will read from her novel ‘Eunice.’
Eunice, nineteen years old, an athlete and a psychology student, has just been
dumped by her boyfriend. Using alcohol and dancing to try to numb the sadness.
Waking up with a severe hangover, the young woman thinks she has hit rock bottom
but the numerous missed calls left on her cell phone by her father foreshadow
the worst. Her mother, Jane, has died after falling into a river after leaving a
nightclub. The investigation quickly concludes that it was a simple accident but
Eunice refuses to believe it. What if a red diary found in a hair salon proved
her right? What if the initials written on several pages were a clue? For
Eunice, it is the beginning of a quest for truth in order to understand who her
mother truly was, about whom she realizes she did not know that well. The shock
of mourning reminds us that every family is a place of buried secrets. The
meeting with the serene and superb Jennah marks a turning point towards
appeasement. Eunice is a story of love, sisterhood, transmission and remission.
It is also an awakening to tenderness and forgiveness.

Maltese author Alex Farrugia will read an extract from his European Literature
Prize 2024 nominated novel Ir-Re Borg (The King of Malta)
The ‘King of Malta’ is a socio-political satirical novel. The story is not only
inspired by Malta’s political crisis in 2019, but also reflects political events
and phenomena in other countries. Mikiel Borg, a small business owner known as
‘Ic-Chopper’, is struggling with a deep depression caused by his trivial fight
with the incredible Maltese bureaucracy. Until finally the idea sparks to launch
‘The Monarchical Party of Malta’. Against all odds he wins the elections
challenging the established two-party system. Fuelled by his success he develops
a populist megalomania. A viral media release initiates the abrupt demise of his
political career. “

Jayrôme C Robinet will read from his novel ‘My way from a white woman to a young
man with a migration background.’
The novel tells a very personal story that takes the reader on a journey between
two genders. As a white French woman living in Berlin, the slow transition into
a man begins. The physical changes bring along the experience of a second
puberty. His new outward appearance does not only give him a new gender
identity, but also makes him appear as a foreigner. In the many small things and
encounters of everyday life, he becomes aware of how perception and behaviour of
his environment suddenly change. Through his own life experience, first as a
woman and then as a man, a direct comparison of both worlds becomes obvious. It
is an exciting discovery that with the transition of gender, origin and age also
appear to change.
In addition to excerpts from this novel, other literary works by the author will
be presented, to widen the insight into his queer everyday life and the
incredible social reactions it brings along.
