Bob Verschueren : Parcours d’un sculpteur végétal et sonore

Bien que protéiforme, l’œuvre du bruxellois Bob Verschueren témoigne d’une profonde cohérence. Son parcours artistique se développe en ramifications, chaque nouveau travail annonce le prochain et se fait l’écho des créations précédentes. Dès 1978, il abandonne son atelier de peintre pour réaliser les Wind Paintings, œuvres conçues en extérieur à partir de pigments naturels répandus au vent dans le paysage. De ce tournant décisif naît son intérêt pour la nature et le végétal en particulier. Depuis, Bob Verschueren a réalisé plus de 280 installations en Europe et dans le monde. Il utilise les éléments de la nature comme moyen d’expression. À partir de végétaux issus du lieu investi, il transforme arbres, branches, feuilles en sculptures spectaculaires, évoquant à la fois la splendeur et la déliquescence de toute chose vivante. Chaque pièce poursuivant une réflexion à la fois sur l’homme, sa vie, sa mort, et sur le lien que ce dernier entretient avec son environnement naturel. “Chacune a valeur de métaphore et non de symbole. « Je ne souhaite pas encapsuler mes installations dans des lectures obligées, univoques. Je préfère les garder ouvertes à la lecture de chacun, avec sa propre sensibilité, ses propres acquis. Je cherche à ce qu’elles aient un caractère événementiel. Lorsqu’une installation entre en résonance avec le lieu qui l’accueille, elle se pose alors comme une évidence, établissant une tension entre l’intemporel de la proposition et son caractère éphémère », précise l’artiste. Il explore d’autres domaines tels que le son (Catalogue de plantes débuté en 1995), les phytogravures (débutées en 1999), la photographie et les frottages deviennent aussi l’objet de ses investigations. Pour certaines de ses installations sonores, Bob Verschueren y insère des textes poétiques de Dominique Sintobin avec laquelle il collabore depuis 2005. Pour notre édition Rise, Bob Verschueren nous offre à voir et à entendre tous les aspects de son art laissant le végétal prendre toute sa place dans Flagey le temps du Festival.

Het werk van Brusselaar Bob Verschueren is zowel proteïnerend als diepgaand coherent. Zijn artistieke carrière ontwikkelde zich in fasen, waarbij elk nieuw werk het volgende aankondigt en een echo is van eerdere creaties. In 1978 verliet hij zijn schildersatelier om Wind Paintings te maken, openluchtwerken gemaakt van natuurlijke pigmenten die door de wind over het landschap werden verspreid. Vanuit dit beslissende keerpunt ontstond zijn interesse in de natuur en in planten in het bijzonder. Sindsdien heeft Bob Verschueren meer dan 280 installaties gemaakt in Europa en over de hele wereld. Hij gebruikt de natuurelementen als expressiemiddel. Hij transformeert bomen, takken en bladeren in spectaculaire sculpturen die zowel de pracht als het verval van de levende dingen oproepen. Elke installatie reflecteert op de mens, zijn leven en dood, en zijn relatie met zijn natuurlijke omgeving. ‘Elk kunstwerk is een metafoor, geen symbool’, schrijft hij, ‘Ik wil mijn installaties niet inkapselen in verplichte, eenduidige interpretaties. Ik houd ze liever open voor de fantasie van elk individu, met zijn of haar eigen gevoeligheden en achtergronden. Ik wil dat ze het karakter hebben als van een gebeurtenis. Wanneer een installatie resoneert met de plaats waar ze is geïnstalleerd, wordt ze er deel van en ontstaat er een spanning tussen de tijdloosheid en de kortstondige aard ervan." Hij heeft ook andere gebieden verkend, zoals geluiden (Catalogue de plantes, begonnen in 1995), fytogravures (begonnen in 1999), fotografie en wrijvingen. Sinds 2005 werkt hij voor bepaalde geluidsinstallaties samen dichter Dominique Sintobin. Doorheen het hele Festival Musiq3 biedt hij in Flagey de kans om alle aspecten van zijn kunst te zien en te horen, steevast met planten in de hoofdrol.

The work of Bob Verschueren, from Brussels, is protean yet deeply coherent. His artistic career develops in ramifications, with each new work heralding the next and echoing previous creations. In 1978, he left his painter's studio to create Wind Paintings, outdoor works made from natural pigments scattered in the wind across the landscape. It was from this decisive turning point that his interest in nature, and in plants in particular, was born. Since then, Bob Verschueren has created over 280 installations in Europe and around the world. He uses the elements of nature as a means of expression. He transforms trees, branches and leaves into spectacular sculptures, evoking both the splendour and the decay of all living things. Each piece reflects on man, his life and death, and his relationship with his natural environment. "Each is a metaphor, not a symbol. "I don't want to encapsulate my installations in obligatory, univocal readings. I prefer to keep them open to the reading of each individual, with his or her own sensibility and background. I want them to have an event-driven character. When an installation resonates with the place in which it is installed, it becomes self-evident, establishing a tension between the timelessness of the proposition and its ephemeral nature," explains the artist. He has also explored other fields, such as sound (Catalogue de plantes, begun in 1995), phytogravures (begun in 1999), photography and rubbings. For some of his sound installations, Bob Verschueren inserts poetic texts by Dominique Sintobin, with whom he has collaborated since 2005. For this year's Rise Festival, Bob Verschueren will be offering us the chance to see and hear all the aspects of his art, with plants taking pride of place in Flagey for the duration of the Festival.
