An active member of ArtContest since 2007, Michèle Schoonjans is hosting a
summer exhibition in her gallery featuring "After Nature", a new installation by
Lithuanian artist Paulius Šliaupa, winner of the 2022 ArtContest, who has just
completed his residency at the Centre Intermondes in La Rochelle.
The exhibition showcases a film and paintings which explore the blurring of
boundaries between nature and culture, human and non-human, and invites viewers
to explore atmospheric landscapes and abstract artefacts. In this context,
ArtContest and Michèle Schoonjans are pleased to invite you on 2 July 2024 from
5pm to 8pm to the opening of the installation "After Nature”.
The exhibition "After Nature" features a new film by Paulius Šliaupa, titled
"Gaia", which depicts the goddess of nature performing rituals at the seaside of
La Rochelle. The film was created during his stay in La Rochelle, where the rich
history and remnants of the past - such as ancient oyster beds and wartime
bunkers - serve as a backdrop to spark imagination.
The paintings in the exhibition "After Nature" showcase natural structures from
various perspectives, layered through time, with Šliaupa meticulously building
up each piece by observing and blending elements like soil, sand, moss, and
more. The result is abstract artefacts that blur the lines between organic and
inorganic forms, inviting viewers to explore the atmosphere and narratives
within.
Paulius Šliaupa's upbringing in a family of geologists instilled in him a deep
appreciation for nature, which is reflected in his work. His rural village of
Barteliai in Lithuania, with its small population of five, serves as a peaceful
retreat where he can draw inspiration from the surrounding landscape and combine
it with motifs from his travels, bringing together disparate images and
atmospheres to create vibrant canvases, painted in the countryside.
About the artist
Paulius Šliaupa (b. 1990) is a Lithuanian artist currently living and working in
Belgium.
Having started with painting, he currently works with video and photography.
Paulius holds a BA in Painting, an MA in Contemporary Sculpture from Vilnius
Academy of Arts, an MFA in Media Arts from KASK, and a postgraduate degree from
the HISK residency program in Ghent, Belgium.
He is a member of SOFAM in Belgium and received their research grant in 2022.
The same year, he won the first prize of the ArtContest. In 2023, he won the
main prize of the INPUT / OUTPUT in Bruges. Over the past years, Šliaupa has
participated in art residencies in Sweden, Belgium, the Netherlands, France, and
Iceland.
His works are in the collections of museums M HKA, Antwerp, Mu.ZEE, Ostend,
IKOB, Eupen, and SMAK, Ghent. Selected exhibitions would include personal
exhibitions: “Night watch“ (2022), Huiden Club in Rotterdam, Netherlands,
“Moonpieces” (2022) Maanstraat in Antwerp, “Neon Poems“ (2021) Casinot XXH in
Malmo (Sweden); “Dès Vu“ (2019), Meno Niša in Vilnius (Lithuania); and the group
exhibitions M Leuven, IKOB in Eupen.

Dans ce contexte, ArtContest et Michèle Schoonjans ont le plaisir de vous
inviter le 2 juillet 2024 de 17h à 20h au vernissage de l’installation"After
Nature”, réalisée par l'artiste lituanien Paulius Šliaupa, lauréat 2022, qui
vient de terminer sa résidence au Centre Intermondes à la Rochelle.
Le titre "After Nature" rappelle l'idée d'aller au-delà des compréhensions et
des représentations traditionnelles de la nature. Il suggère une approche où la
distinction entre la nature et la culture, l'humain et le non-humain, est
brouillée ou redéfinie. Le titre renvoie à une vision tournée vers l'avenir,
dans lequel l'homme est profondément intégré dans le monde naturel.
L'installation présente le nouveau film de Paulius Šliaupa, Gaia - déesse de la
nature effectuant des rituels au bord de la mer à La Rochelle. Le film a été
créé pendant sa résidence au Centre Intermondes. La Rochelle et ses environs
sont riches d'une histoire qui stimule l'imagination. Sur le littoral, des
vestiges émergent de la mer - anciens lits, restes de squelettes de fer
autrefois intégrés à la culture des huîtres, aujourd'hui recouverts d'algues et
de rouille. Des bunkers de guerre ponctuent les plages, noyées dans la
végétation, rappelant une époque révolue.
Les peintures de l'exposition révèlent des structures naturelles sous
différentes perspectives, superposées dans le temps. Il les fait croître, couche
après couche, en observant le sol, le sable, la mousse, les routes gelées, la
neige, les structures hivernales, les ciels d'été et les champs lointains de son
village lituanien. Les sujets deviennent des artefacts abstraits, presque
méconnaissables en eux-mêmes, brouillant les frontières entre l'organique et
l'inorganique, invitant à une exploration atmosphérique.
Issu d'une famille de géologues, Paulius Šliaupa a un lien profond avec la
nature. Son petit village de Barteliai en Lituanie, qui compte cinq habitants,
lui sert de refuge et de microcosme où il peut observer la lumière et réfléchir.
Il y associe des motifs recueillis au cours de ses voyages avant de retourner
dans le vaste monde. Des images et des atmosphères de différents pays se mêlent
aux champs de Barteliai et prennent vie sur des toiles peintes à la campagne.
A propos de l'artiste
Paulius Šliaupa (né en 1990) est un artiste lituanien qui vit et travaille en
Belgique.
Après avoir commencé par la peinture, il travaille actuellement la vidéo et la
photographie. Il est titulaire d'une licence en peinture, d'une maîtrise en
sculpture contemporaine de l'Académie des arts de Vilnius, d'un MFA en arts
médiatiques de la KASK et d'un diplôme de post-universitaire du programme de
résidence HISK à Gand.
Il est membre de la SOFAM en Belgique et il a reçu leur bourse de recherche en
2022. La même année, il remporte le premier prix d’ArtContest. En 2023, il
reçoit le prix principal de l'INPUT / OUTPUT à Bruges. Au cours des dernières
années, Paulius Šliaupa a participé à des résidences artistiques en Suède, en
Belgique, aux Pays-Bas, en France et en Islande.
Ses œuvres font partie des collections des musées M HKA, Anvers, Mu.ZEE,
Ostende, IKOB, Eupen, et SMAK, Gand. Parmi les expositions sélectionnées
figurent des expositions personnelles : "Night watch" (2022) Huiden Club à

Als actief lid van ArtContest sinds 2007 organiseert Michèle Schoonjans een
zomertentoonstelling in haar galerie met “After Nature”, een nieuwe installatie
van de Litouwse kunstenaar Paulius Šliaupa, winnaar van de ArtContest 2022, die
net zijn residentie in het Centre Intermondes in La Rochelle heeft afgerond.
De tentoonstelling toont een film en schilderijen die de vervaging van de
grenzen tussen natuur en cultuur, mens en niet-mens onderzoeken en nodigt
toeschouwers uit om sfeervolle landschappen en abstracte artefacten te
verkennen. In deze context nodigen ArtContest en Michèle Schoonjans u graag uit
op 2 juli 2024 van 17u tot 20u voor de opening van de installatie “After
Nature”.
De tentoonstelling “After Nature” toont een nieuwe film van Paulius Šliaupa,
getiteld “Gaia”, waarin de godin van de natuur wordt afgebeeld terwijl ze
rituelen uitvoert aan de kust van La Rochelle. De film is gemaakt tijdens zijn
verblijf in La Rochelle, waar de rijke geschiedenis en overblijfselen uit het
verleden - zoals oude oesterbanken en bunkers uit oorlogstijd - dienen als
achtergrond om de verbeelding aan te wakkeren.
De schilderijen in de tentoonstelling “After Nature” tonen natuurlijke
structuren vanuit verschillende perspectieven, gelaagd door de tijd heen,
waarbij Šliaupa elk stuk nauwgezet opbouwt door elementen zoals aarde, zand, mos
en meer te observeren en te mengen. Het resultaat zijn abstracte artefacten die
de grenzen tussen organische en anorganische vormen doen vervagen en de kijkers
uitnodigen om de sfeer en het verhaal binnenin te verkennen.
Paulius Šliaupa's opvoeding in een familie van geologen bracht hem een diepe
waardering voor de natuur bij, die wordt weerspiegeld in zijn werk. Zijn
landelijke dorpje Barteliai in Litouwen, met een kleine vijf inwoners, dient als
een vredig toevluchtsoord waar hij inspiratie kan putten uit het omringende
landschap en dit kan combineren met motieven van zijn reizen, waarbij hij
ongelijksoortige beelden en sferen samenbrengt tot levendige doeken, geschilderd
op het platteland.
Over de kunstenaar
Paulius Šliaupa (1990) is een Litouwse kunstenaar die momenteel in België woont
en werkt.
Hij begon met schilderen en werkt nu met video en fotografie. Paulius behaalde
een BA in schilderkunst, een MA in hedendaagse beeldhouwkunst aan de
kunstacademie van Vilnius, een MFA in mediakunst aan het KASK en een
postgraduaat aan het HISK residentieprogramma in Gent, België.
Hij is lid van SOFAM in België en ontving hun onderzoeksbeurs in 2022. In
datzelfde jaar won hij de eerste prijs van de ArtContest. In 2023 won hij de
hoofdprijs van de INPUT / OUTPUT in Brugge. De afgelopen jaren heeft Šliaupa
deelgenomen aan kunstresidenties in Zweden, België, Nederland, Frankrijk en
IJsland.
