Black History Month - AB

This year’s theme, B(l)ack to Our Roots, is an invitation to explore heritage, identity, and the wisdom passed down through generations. It also marks a return to the festival’s foundational mission: celebrating Black communities’ diversity, creativity, and resilience.

In this light we look forward to Rumba Divas on 16 March, a concept by Monique Mbeka Phoba. Because it doesn’t get more Cultural Heritage than this UNESCO-recognized music genre. Under the artistic direction of outstanding bass and contrabass player Philip Kanza, this concert celebrates the rich legacy of the great female voices of Congolese Rumba. Songs by legendary artists Jolie Detta, Mbilia Bel and Abeti to name a few will pass the revue.

But before this celebratory evening of heritage, let’s talk about black artists today on 14 March. Project and Artist Manager Selene Alexa (Yseult, Black Mamba, Gayance, Marta Da’ro), will tap into her expertise in artist development to provide key industry insights and strategies for emerging Black artists in Belgium. Followed by an engaging panel discussion on the topic of creating a meaningful public presence as a Black artist in the Belgian music industry.

We close off our activities on 21 March with Jabanè Sessions 6. With an all women of color casting curated by Bona Léa. The Brussels native DJ treats us to a club night (AB at Night) and a songwriting workshop by STACE.

Het thema van dit jaar, B(l)ack to Our Roots, nodigt uit om erfgoed, identiteit en de wijsheid die door generaties heen is doorgegeven, te verkennen. Tegelijkertijd markeert het een terugkeer naar de oorspronkelijke missie van het festival: het vieren van de diversiteit, creativiteit en veerkracht van zwarte communities.

In dit licht kijken we uit naar Rumba Divas op 16 maart, een concept van Monique Mbeka Phoba. Want cultureel erfgoed wordt niet veel groter dan deze door UNESCO erkende muziekstijl. Onder de artistieke leiding van de uitmuntende bassist en contrabassist Philip Kanza, eert dit concert de rijke nalatenschap van de grote vrouwelijke stemmen binnen de Congolese Rumba. Nummers van legendarische artiesten zoals Jolie Detta, Mbilia Bel en Abeti passeren de revue.

Maar vóór deze feestelijke avond van erfgoed, gaan we op 14 maart in gesprek over zwarte artiesten vandaag. Project- en artiestenmanager Selene Alexa (Yseult, Black Mamba, Gayance, Marta Da’ro) deelt haar expertise over artist development en geeft cruciale inzichten en strategieën voor opkomende zwarte artiesten. Aansluitend volgt een panelgesprek over hoe je als zwarte artist een betekenisvolle publieke aanwezigheid opbouwt in de Belgische muziekindustrie.

We sluiten onze activiteiten af op 21 maart met Jabanè Sessions 6, gecureerd door Bona Léa. De Brusselse DJ trakteert ons op een club night (AB at Night) en een songwritingworkshop door STACE.

Le thème de cette année, B(l)ack to Our Roots, est une invitation à explorer l’héritage, l’identité et la sagesse transmise de génération en génération. Il marque également un retour à la mission fondamentale du festival : célébrer la diversité, la créativité et la résilience des communautés noires.

Dans ce cadre, nous avons hâte d’assister à Rumba Divas le 16 mars, un concept imaginé par Monique Mbeka Phoba. Ce patrimoine culturel n'est pas des moindres, puisque ce genre musical est désormais reconnu par l'UNESCO. Sous la direction artistique du talentueux bassiste et contrebassiste Philip Kanza, ce concert rend hommage aux grandes voix féminines de la rumba congolaise. Des chansons de légendes telles que Jolie Detta, Mbilia Bel et Abeti seront interprétées.

Mais avant cette soirée de célébration, nous nous pencherons sur la place des artistes noirs aujourd’hui, lors d’un événement le 14 mars. La manager et directrice artistique Selene Alexa (Yseult, Black Mamba, Gayance, Marta Da’ro) partagera son expertise en développement artistique, en offrant des stratégies clés pour les artistes émergents. Ensuite, un panel abordera la construction d'une présence publique forte en tant qu’artiste noir dans l’industrie musicale belge.

Nous clôturerons nos activités le 21 mars avec Jabanè Sessions 6, une curation entièrement féminine et de couleur, programmée par Bona Léa. La DJ bruxelloise nous offrira une soirée club (AB at Night), ainsi qu’un atelier d’écriture de chansons dirigé par STACE.
