Brussels Philharmonic & Patrick Hahn

Ready for a journey back in time? For one night, festival artist Patricia Kopatchinskaja will transport us to the 1930s, to experience musical milestones from that turbulent period in a unique concert triptych. The setting: the striking Flagey building, which dates from the same period.


The evening’s main event is a concert with Brussels Philharmonic, conducted by Patrick Hahn. Patricia Kopatchinskaja pairs Stravinsky’s neoclassical Violin Concerto with her own double concerto, A Play, for violin, cello, and orchestra, with Anastasia Kobekina on cello. Olivier Messiaen’s symphonic meditation Les Offrandes oubliées will also be featured.


But the excitement extends beyond this orchestral feast. As a prelude, Brussels conservatory students take on Edgard Varèse’s Ionisation, a pinnacle of the percussion repertoire. Rounding off the evening, a film screening of Ursonate will show Patricia Kopatchinskaja and colleagues interpreting Kurt Schwitters’ brilliantly Dadaist sound poem. Between segments, ‘PatKop’ and pianist Anthony Romaniuk will perform short works in the same spirit.

Prêts pour un voyage dans le temps ? Le temps d’une soirée, l’artiste invitée du festival,
Patricia Kopatchinskaja, nous ramène dans les années 1930. Trois concerts
exceptionnels mettront à l’honneur quelques succès de cette période
trépidante. Le tout dans le magnifique bâtiment Flagey, construit à cette même époque.

Le clou de la soirée est un concert du Brussels Philharmonic dirigé par Patrick Hahn.
Kopatchinskaja associe le Concerto pour violon néoclassique d’Igor Stravinsky à sa
propre composition A Play, un double concerto pour orchestre, violon et violoncelle, la
partie de cet instrument étant assurée par Anastasia Kobekina. Sera en outre donnée
Les Offrandes oubliées, une méditation symphonique d’Olivier Messiaen.

Mais Flagey bouillonnera aussi d’activité avant et après cette fête orchestrale. En
prélude, les étudiants du Conservatoire de Bruxelles se risqueront à un sommet du
répertoire pour percussions, Ionisation d’Edgard Varèse. En apothéose sera projeté tard
dans la nuit le film Ursonate, dans lequel Kopatchinskaja interprète avec quelques
collègues le fabuleux poème sonore dadaïste de Kurt Schwitters. Entre les divers mouvements, « PatKop » et le pianiste Anthony Romaniuk joueront des œuvres brèves dans le même esprit.

Klaar voor een tijdreis? Eén avond lang neemt festivalartiest Patricia Kopatchinskaja ons mee naar de jaren 1930. Enkele muzikale mijlpalen uit die turbulente periode passeren de revue in een triptiek van unieke concerten. Plaats van de actie: het schitterende Flageygebouw, dat uit diezelfde tijd dateert.

Dé blikvanger van de avond is een concert met Brussels Philharmonic onder leiding van Patrick Hahn. Kopatchinskaja plaatst het neoklassieke Vioolconcerto van Igor Stravinsky naast haar eigen dubbelconcerto A Play voor viool, cello en orkest. Anastasia Kobekina neemt de cellopartij voor haar rekening. Daarnaast klinkt Olivier Messiaens symfonische meditatie Les Offrandes oubliées.

Maar ook voor en na dit orkestrale feest bruist Flagey van bedrijvigheid. Als prelude wagen Brusselse conservatoriumstudenten zich aan een hoogtepunt uit het percussierepertoire: Edgard Varèses Ionisation. Uitsmijter in de late uurtjes is een vertoning van de film Ursonate. Daarin verbeeldt Kopatchinskaja samen met enkele collega’s het heerlijk dadaïstische klankgedicht van Kurt Schwitters. Tussen de delen door spelen ‘PatKop’ en pianist Anthony Romaniuk korte werken in dezelfde geest.
