An Exercise in Assembling

Practiced as a series of exercises in examining assembling as a methodology for resistance, “An Exercise in Assembling” is an ongoing study of perpetual recurrences: political, bodily, archival and filmic recurrence of our actualities, past and present. Using film programming as a way of engaging with archival structures and militant film histories, the work is constructed in four chapters of extracted scenes from films made within different cine and revolutionary geographies including Palestine, Cuba, Western Sahara, Guinea Bissau, and France among others. Pertaining to the structure of "An Exercise in Assembling” Subversive Film will speak along some of the film fragments and expand on some of the aspects of this work, in conversation with Bojana Cvejić. • Subversive Film is a cinema research and production collective that aims to cast new light upon historical works related to Palestine and the region, to engender support for film preservation, and to investigate archival practices. Their long-term and ongoing projects explore this cine-historic field including digitally reissuing previously overlooked films, curating rare film screening cycles, subtitling rediscovered films, producing publications, and devising other forms of interventions. Formed in 2011, Subversive Film is based between Brussels and Ramallah. •  Bojana Cvejić is author of several books, notably Choreographing Problems (2015) and Toward a Transindividual Self (co-written with Ana Vujanović 2022). As a practicing dramaturg, performer or director, she has co-created many performances that have extensively toured internationally. Bojana has been active in the self-organization of two collective platforms for experimental artistic production, critical theory and self-education in Europe and former Yugoslavia (Performing Arts Forum, Saint-Erme since 2005; TkH/Walking Theory 2001-17), which have informed her research in social choreography, transindividuality, and anti-fascist political solidarity. Since 2017, she is Professor at Oslo National Academy of Arts.

Pratiqué comme une série d'exercices pour examiner le rassemblement en tant que méthodologie de résistance, « An Exercise in Assembling » est une étude continue des récurrences perpétuelles : récurrence politique, corporelle, archivistique et filmique de nos actualités, de notre passé et de notre présent. Leurs projets en cours et à long terme explorent ce domaine ciné-historique, y compris la réédition numérique de films précédemment négligés, l'organisation de cycles de projections de films rares, le sous-titrage de films redécouverts, la production de publications et l'élaboration d'autres formes d'interventions. Opgevat als een reeks oefeningen die ‘assembling’ onderzoeken als methode van verzet, is An Exercise in Assembling een doorlopende studie van constante terugkeer: politieke, lichamelijke, archivalische en filmische herhalingen van onze actualiteit, van het verleden en het heden. Door gebruik te maken van filmprogrammatie als een manier om om te gaan met archiefstructuren en militante filmgeschiedenis, bestaat het werk uit vier hoofdstukken als geëxtraheerde scènes uit films gemaakt in verschillende cine en revolutionaire geografieën, waaronder Palestina, Cuba, Westelijke Sahara, Guinee Bissau en Frankrijk. Vasthoudend aan de structuur van An Exercise in Assembling, zal Subversive Film in gesprek met Bojana Cvejić enkele filmfragmenten bespreken en aspecten ervan verder uitdiepen.  • Subversive Film is een filmonderzoeks- en productiecollectief dat tot doel heeft een nieuw licht te werpen op historische werken met betrekking tot Palestina en de regio, steun te verwerven voor filmconservering en archiefpraktijken te onderzoeken. Hun langlopende verkennen dit cine-historische veld, waaronder het digitaal heruitbrengen van eerder over het hoofd geziene films, het cureren van cycli met zeldzaam vertoonde films, het ondertitelen van herontdekte films, productie van publicaties en andere vormen van interventies.
