Laura Cortese's Acoustic Evenings

Laura Cortese (The Dance Cards, Bright Light Sessions) is an American songwriter and virtuoso violinist known for her deep roots in traditional music. With a keen ear for sonic gems, groove, and melody, she pushes the boundaries of roots music. Now based in Belgium for several years, Laura has cultivated friendships across the US and Europe, connecting with bluegrass, Cajun, old-time, zydeco, and other roots traditions. For the second year in a row, she is uniting four exceptional songwriters from both sides of the Atlantic for a one-of-a-kind concert experience.

Dirk Powell (Louisiana) learned to play the banjo and fiddle from his grandfather in Kentucky and has been a cornerstone of Louisiana’s thriving Cajun/Creole music scene since his early twenties. A master of the diatonic accordion in the Cajun style, Dirk has toured and recorded with legends such as Joan Baez, Rhiannon Giddens, and Eric Clapton, earning him a place among the most respected names in roots music.

From Scotland, Anna Massie (Blazin’ Fiddles, RANT) brings her extraordinary talent as a guitarist and fiddler. A celebrated folk musician, Anna also hosts BBC Radio Scotland’s award-winning program Traveling Folk. Her captivating voice and skill have earned her numerous folk music accolades, cementing her reputation as one of the finest in her field.

Kaia Kater (banjo, vocals) is a critically acclaimed artist praised by NPR’s Tiny Desk, The Guardian, Rolling Stone, and No Depression. Known for her intricate banjo playing and lush songwriting, Kaia draws on influences from Quebec, the Caribbean, and Appalachia—reflecting the rich diversity of her heritage in every note she plays and sings.

Finally, Nic Gareiss (Hot Spoons, etc.) will bring his breathtaking fusion of Irish and Appalachian dance to the stage. Nic redefines the art of dance, incorporating musical percussive elements into his movements. With a unique blend of clogging, flatfooting, step dancing, and improvisation, he creates a style that seamlessly merges tradition with innovation, elevating dance as an integral part of the musical experience.

A CONCERT AT JAANA'S
Jaana is Finnish, an illustrator and has been living in Brussels for 25 years. She comes from a long line of folk musicians, and it seems the tradition is alive and well, as her daughter is also a musician. For Jaana, hosting the Living Room Music Winter Sessions is a wonderful way to bring life to a neighborhood where cultural activities are rarely organized. A word of caution for those with allergies: a cat also shares the apartment.

As part of its nomadic season, Muziekpublique presents the Living Room Music Winter Sessions. 19 concerts in apartments across the 19 municipalities of Brussels. 19 homes opening their doors, 19 intimate evenings of live music to experience traditional tunes from all corners of the world, and the sheer joy of sharing the love of music with neighbors, friends, or family.

Laura Cortese (The Dance Cards, Bright Light Sessions) est une compositrice et une violoniste virtuose d’origine américaine connue pour son ancrage profond dans la musique traditionnelle. Avec son oreille attentive et son goût pour le groove, elle repousse les limites de la musique traditionnelle. Installée en Belgique depuis plusieurs années, Laura entretient des amitiés avec des artistes aux États-Unis et en Europe et se rapproche du bluegrass, du cajun, du old-time, du zydeco et d’autres traditions musicales. Pour la deuxième année consécutive, elle réunit quatre auteurs-compositeurs exceptionnels des deux côtés de l’Atlantique pour un concert unique en son genre.

Dirk Powell (Louisiane) a appris à jouer du banjo et du violon auprès de son grand-père dans le Kentucky et est, depuis le début de sa vingtaine, une pierre angulaire de la scène musicale cajun/créole florissante de Louisiane. Maître de l’accordéon diatonique dans le style cajun, Dirk a tourné et enregistré avec des légendes comme Joan Baez, Rhiannon Giddens et Eric Clapton, ce qui lui a valu une place parmi les noms les plus respectés de la musique roots.

Originaire d’Écosse, Anna Massie (Blazin’ Fiddles, RANT) est une guitariste et une violoniste talentueuse. Musicienne folk réputée, Anna anime également l’émission Traveling Folk de la BBC Radio Scotland, qui a été primée. Sa voix captivante et son talent lui ont valu de nombreuses récompenses dans le domaine de la musique folk, faisant d’elle une artiste de premier plan.

Kaia Kater (banjo, chant) est une artiste acclamée par la critique et saluée par NPR’s Tiny Desk, The Guardian, Rolling Stone et No Depression. Connue pour son jeu de banjo complexe et la qualité de son écriture, Kaia s’inspire d’influences québécoises, caribéennes et appalachiennes. Enfin, Nic Gareiss (Hot Spoons, etc.) apportera sur scène son époustouflante fusion de danse irlandaise et appalachienne. Nic redéfinit l’art de la danse en incorporant des éléments musicaux percutants dans ses mouvements. Avec un mélange unique de clogging, de flatfooting, de step dance et d’improvisation, il crée un style qui mixe harmonieusement tradition et innovation, faisant de la danse une partie intégrante du concert.

Laura Cortese (the Dance Cards, Bright Light Sessions) is een Amerikaanse songwriter en topvioliste die vanuit rootsmuziek steeds op zoek gaat naar pareltjes in klank, groove en melodie. Ze woont nu al enkele jaren in België, maar leerde doorheen het toeren in de VS en Europa veel vrienden kennen in bluegrass, cajun, old time, zydeco en andere rootsmuziek. Voor het tweede jaar brengt zij vier songwriters van beide kanten van de Atlantische oceaan samen voor een uniek concert.

Dirk Powell (Louisiana) leerde banjo en viool van zijn grootvader uit Kentucky en maakt sinds zijn vroege twintiger jaren deel uit van de bloeiende Cajun/Creoolse muziekgemeenschap in Louisiana. Hij is een referentie op diatonisch accordeon voor de cajunstijl. Hij toerde en maakte opnames met muzikanten als Joan Baez, Rhiannon Giddens, Eric Clapton,… Uit Schotland komt gitariste en violiste.

Anna Massie (Blazin’ Fiddles en RANT). Ze presenteert ook het bekroonde folkprogramma van BBC Radio Scotland: Traveling Folk en is een begenadigde zangeres die talloze folkawards won.

Kaia Kater (banjo en zang) grossieert in lovende kritieken van NPR’s Tiny Desk, The Guardian, Rolling Stone en No Depression. Door haar kunstzinnige banjospel en weelderige songwriting put Kaia uit invloeden die geworteld zijn in Quebec, het Caribisch gebied en de Appalachia, die allemaal de diversiteit van haar achtergrond weerspiegelen.

Tot slot zal danser Nic Gareiss (Hot Spoons,…) zijn meesterlijke samensmelting van Ierse en Appalachian dans toevoegen aan het geheel. Nic tilt dans naar een nieuw niveau en voegt als dansend muzikaal percussie toe aan het geheel. Met een unieke mix van clog, flatfoot en stepdance, improvisatie creëert hij een dansstijl die traditie en innovatie samenbrengt.

Jaana is een Finse illustratrice die al 25 jaar in Brussel woont. Ze komt uit een familie met een rijke traditie van volksmuzikanten, en die traditie leeft voort, want haar dochter is ook muzikant. Voor Jaana is het organiseren van de Living Room Music Winter Sessions een prachtige manier om nieuw leven te brengen in een buurt waar zelden culturele activiteiten plaatsvinden. Let op voor mensen met allergieën: er woont ook een kat in het appartement.
