Reappropriation of Public Space

Istanbul’s independent theatre scene is a constellation of creativity, resilience, and innovation that remains largely invisible in dominant Western narratives about Turkey. Beyond the political headlines and urban transformations, these theatres have been quietly transforming the city’s social and cultural fabric since the 1990s.By repurposing vacant places as intimate performance spaces, independent groups have redefined both the boundaries of the stage and the meaning of public space. These spaces do more than host performances—they challenge societal norms, make minority narratives visible, and create arenas where the stories of those excluded from the dominant narrative can be heard and seen.Artistic practices in Istanbul’s alternative theatres reorganise the relationships between audiences and performers, echoing the ways public space itself can be contested and reconfigured. They claim their right to the city, bringing new visibility to marginalized communities and reimagining the role of art in urban life. These acts resonate with broader questions of how cities are framed: Who gets to be seen, and who is excluded?Moments such as the Gezi Movement in 2013 further highlighted the political potential of these spaces, as public squares became stages for collective resistance and creativity. Yet, the true strength of this theatre movement lies in its everyday engagement with Istanbul’s dynamic urban landscape, continuously carving out space for art and sociability amid the city’s constant flux.This lecture invites audiences to explore this little-known dimension of Istanbul, while drawing comparisons with Brussels. What can these alternative theatres teach us about reclaiming urban spaces for creativity, visibility, and community? And how can art challenge the ways cities are framed and experienced?

La scène théâtrale indépendante d'Istanbul est une constellation de créativité, de résilience et d'innovation qui demeure largement invisible dans les récits occidentaux dominants sur la Turquie. Au-delà des gros titres politiques et des transformations urbaines, ces théâtres ont, au fil du temps, été à l’origine d'une transformation discrète du tissu social et culturel de la ville depuis les années 1990.En réaffectant des lieux vacants pour en faire des espaces de représentation intimes, des groupes indépendants ont redéfini les limites de la scène et la signification de l'espace public. Ces espaces ne se bornent pas à accueillir des spectacles : ils remettent en question les normes sociétales, rendent visibles les récits des minorités et créent des arènes où les récits des exclu·es du récit dominant peuvent être entendu·es et vu·es.Les pratiques artistiques des théâtres alternatifs d'Istanbul réorganisent les relations entre le public et les artistes, et font écho à la manière dont l'espace public lui-même peut être contesté et reconfiguré. Elles revendiquent leur droit à la ville, en apportant une nouvelle visibilité aux communautés marginalisées et en réimaginant le rôle de l'art dans la vie urbaine. Ces actes entrent en résonance avec des questions plus générales sur la manière dont les villes sont encadrées : Qui y est vu·e et qui est en exclu·e ?Des événements comme le mouvement de protestation du parc Gezi en 2013 ont mis en lumière le potentiel politique de ces espaces, les places publiques devenant le théâtre d'une résistance et d'une créativité collectives. La véritable force de ce mouvement théâtral réside cependant dans son engagement quotidien dans le paysage urbain dynamique d'Istanbul, en créant continuellement des espaces pour l'art et la sociabilité au milieu du flux constant de la ville.Cette conférence invite le public à explorer cette dimension méconnue d'Istanbul, tout en établissant des comparaisons avec Bruxelles. Que peuvent nous apprendre ces théâtres alternatifs sur la reconquête des espaces urbains pour la créativité, la visibilité et la communauté ? Et comment l'art peut-il remettre en question la manière dont les villes sont encadrées et vécues ?

De onafhankelijke theaterscene van Istanbul is een constellatie van creativiteit, veerkracht en innovatie die grotendeels onzichtbaar blijft in de dominante westerse verhalen over Turkije. Naast de politieke krantenkoppen en stedelijke transformaties hebben deze theaters sinds de jaren '90 in stilte het sociale en culturele weefsel van de stad veranderd.Door leegstaande plekken om te vormen tot intieme voorstellingsruimtes hebben onafhankelijke groepen zowel de grenzen van het podium als de betekenis van de openbare ruimte herdefinieerd. Deze ruimtes doen meer dan optredens organiseren - ze dagen maatschappelijke normen uit, maken verhalen van minderheden zichtbaar en creëren platforms waar de verhalen van degenen die zijn uitgesloten van het dominante verhaal kunnen worden gehoord en gezien.Artistieke praktijken in de alternatieve theaters van Istanbul reorganiseren de relaties tussen publiek en performers, en weerspiegelen de manieren waarop de openbare ruimte zelf kan worden betwist en geherconfigureerd. Ze claimen hun recht op de stad, brengen gemarginaliseerde gemeenschappen nieuwe zichtbaarheid en herdefiniëren de rol van kunst in het stedelijke leven. Deze daden resoneren met bredere vragen over hoe steden worden geframed: Wie wordt er gezien en wie wordt er buitengesloten?Momenten zoals de Gezi-beweging in 2013 benadrukten het politieke potentieel van deze ruimtes, toen openbare pleinen podia werden voor collectief verzet en creativiteit.
