Dis-Education: Dismantling frameworks that built a workforce, not a future

"Colonial patterns in education: Can we dismantle and reimagine the framework that built a workforce, not a future?"

Education is a core foundation of any society.

It’s commonly know that education systems across the world are about 100 years out of date. What’s lesser known is that a lot of education systems in Global South were weaponised and patterned on colonialism — and still do today. Meanwhile education systems in the Global North skip over colonial histories.

What is also alarming is that, as an act of novelty, the Global North is 'decolonialising' themselves by appropriating and misusing concepts birthed in the GS with their own rebrand. Once again, exploitation and extraction!

How can we recognise the colonial patterns in education systems, and re-pattern them in a decolonial way?

"Attention - The Time for Feasting is Over" Dialogue Sessions

Join The Outspoken Native for an interactive and transformative session on 16th February 2025, 16:30, as part of our exhibition "The Time for Feasting is Over."

This session, titled Dis-Education, delves into how colonialism dismantled indigenous education systems to create a colonial workforce. Discover the historical, cultural, and personal impact of this erasure and how it continues to affect knowledge systems and identity today.

💬 What to Expect:

  • Reflect on your own educational experiences through stories and group discussions.
  • Learn about the systematic replacement of indigenous knowledge with colonial structures and its long-lasting implications.
  • Engage in meaningful conversations about how education has shaped your perspective—whether as a beneficiary or as someone disconnected from their roots.
  • Leave with actionable steps to reconnect with marginalized knowledge systems and advocate for more equitable education practices.

Bring a Friend! To ensure diverse perspectives, we encourage you to invite someone with a different heritage in terms of historical relationship to colonialism.
