Aborder le logement #1 | Oana Bogdan (&bogdan, Bruxelles)

The world is facing a severe housing affordability crisis, widening the gap in wealth and income inequality. Rents in major cities are skyrocketing, outpacing incomes as property becomes a prime investment. The once vital social mission of modern architecture - to provide a decent standard of living for all - feels like a distant memory. Today, construction often serves investment interests, but the right to quality housing should be a fundamental human right, with architecture as a tool for social justice.

In Brussels, the situation is dire, with up to 40% of households unable to afford housing. The demand for social housing increases every year, yet the supply of affordable housing remains insufficient. Current housing policies are inadequate to meet these urgent needs.

Oana Bogdan will explore viable solutions to this global crisis, drawing on her experience with the Brussels building code reform "Good Living", Romania's Think Tank "Quality Living", the European initiative "HouseEurope !" and several affordable housing projects, public or private, completed or in progress, designed by her practice &bogdan. Join us to discover how visionary clients and innovative architectural commissions, combined with socially committed architectural practices, can pave the way to more equitable and affordable housing for all.

LUCA - Luxembourg Center for Architecture, with the support of the Ministry of Housing and Spatial Planning, is organising a series of four lectures called 'Aborder le logement' ('Approaching housing') that will show how architects, through their work and commitment, can contribute to producing quality affordable housing, even in restrictive economic and regulatory contexts.

The series will feature leading architectural figures from the three border countries and Luxembourg. The aim is to provide an overview of architectural production in the three countries and to compare it with the local context.

Oana Bogdan (architect, founder of &Bogdan, Bruxelles) is the founder of the Brussels-based practice &bogdan. Her problem-solving mentality and collaborative ethos come together to create spatial conditions for collective life and to anchor the work of &bogdan in the ongoing public debate. Embracing her ability to translate to other contexts, she took on the role of Secretary of State for Culture in Romania and chair of the Good Living expert committee responsible for reforming the building code in the Brussels region.
