Neptunian Maximalism

NEPTUNIAN MAXIMALISM, alias NNMM et ses multiples formules « Arkestra », fut initié par le multi-instrumentiste Guillaume Cazalet à la guitare/basse et voix avec le saxophoniste vétéran Jean Jacques Duerinckx à Bruxelles en 2018, lors d’une résidence avec les deux batteurs Sébastien Schmit et Pierre Arese.

Le résultat de cette rencontre fut une entité bifaciale, appelant tantôt à une transe vaudou primitive aux intonations percussives, dominée par le rythme répétitif et explosifs, des esprits sauvages menaçants émanants d’un chaos originel violent, tantôt vers une méditation psychédélique reposant sur une musique de drone amplifiée où son explorés le temps, l’harmonie, la puissance de la tonique et ses harmoniques iridescentes, le poids, la pérennité, la ruine. Tout cela était le résultat d’un processus musical improvisé librement et capté en 2 journées intenses.

De cette résidence est né leur premier EP, The Conference Of The Stars (2018), sorti sur le label Homo Sensibilis Sounds, puissante expansion universelle manifestée par une progression harmonique lente, lourde et intense illuminé par un saxophone sopranino flamboyant. Il sera suivi d’un album trilogique épique de 02h09min intitulé ÉONS (2020) paru sur I, Voidhanger Records qui demeure la pièce maîtresse de leur discographie tant sa radicalité, sa diversité cohérente et sa singularité ne trouve de pareil égal, mêlant drone/doom metal mystique et chaotique, free jazz pachidermique, l’ensemble animé par une énergie cosmique et psychédélique empreint de forces primaires, habité de possessions spirituelles et prophétiques, résultant en partie du travail d’édition, d’arrangement et de postproduction de Guillaume et exalté par une pochette signée de l’artiste contemporain japonais Kaneko Tomiyuki.

En explorant l’évolution de l’espèce humaine, ils questionnent l’avenir de la vie sur terre dont le narratif se dessine dans des titres aussi évocateurs qu’hermétiques, et dont l’expression prend forme à travers l’utilisation de textes spéculatifs en langage prototypal Homo-sapiens (*Pierre Lanchantin), l’attrait pour la philosophie, le parcours académique en architecture et arts plastiques ainsi qu’une forme d’introspection chamanique visant l’invocation d’identités ancestrales ou animales interieures. Le collectif tentent infine de créer un sentiment d’acceptation de la fin de l’ère «Anthropocène» à travers une expérience musicale sotériologique.

NEPTUNIAN MAXIMALISM, aka NNMM and its multiple “Arkestra” formulas, was initiated by multi-instrumentalist Guillaume Cazalet on guitar/bass and vocals with veteran saxophonist Jean Jacques Duerinckx in Brussels in 2018, during a residency with the two drummers Sébastien Schmit and Pierre Arese.

The result of this encounter was a bifacial entity, sometimes calling for a primitive voodoo trance with percussive intonations, dominated by repetitive and explosive rhythm, threatening wild spirits emanating from a violent original chaos, sometimes towards a psychedelic meditation based on amplified drone music where time, harmony, the power of the tonic and its iridescent harmonics, weight, durability, ruin are explored aspects. All this was the result of a freely improvised musical process captured in 2 intense days.

From this residency was born their first EP, The Conference Of The Stars (2018), released on Homo Sensibilis Sounds, a powerful universal expansion manifested by a slow, heavy and intense harmonic progression illuminated by a flamboyant sopranino saxophone. It will be followed by an epic trilogy album of 02h09min entitled ÉONS (2020) released on I, Voidhanger Records which remains the centerpiece of their discography as its radicality, its coherent diversity and its singularity finds no equal, mixing mystical and chaotic drone/doom metal, pachidermic free jazz, the whole animated by a cosmic and psychedelic energy imbued with primary forces, inhabited by spiritual and prophetic possessions, resulting in part from the editing, arrangement and post-production work of Guillaume and exalted by a cover signed by the Japanese monumental painter artist Kaneko Tomiyuki.

By exploring the evolution of the human species, they question the future of life on earth, the narrative of which is drawn in titles as evocative as they are hermetic, and whose expression takes shape through the use of speculative texts in prototypal Homo-sapiens language (*Pierre Lanchantin), the attraction to philosophy, the academic path in architecture and plastic arts as well as a form of shamanic introspection aimed at the invocation of ancestral or inner animal identities. The collective ultimately attempts to create a feeling of acceptance of the end of the "Anthropocene" era through a soteriological musical experience.
