GERNOT WIELAND: SQUARE, CIRCLE, SQUARE
21oktober 2023

Brussel|Tentoonstelling
𝚊𝚛𝚐𝚘𝚜 presents Square, Circle, Square, Gernot Wieland's first solo-exhibition in Belgium. The exhibition highlights a selection of audiovisual works, drawings, and a sculptural piece that uncover the dark underbelly of Western civil society. Square, Circle, Square delves into two distinct yet intimately entwined psychological states: a shame of origins and collective repression. The artist links these categories to unresolved pasts and undefined futures associated with growing up in the Austrian countryside, foregrounding them as generative instead of depressed conditions. He does this by zooming in on his surroundings, highlighting things that have affected and influenced him since childhood. Wieland addresses challenging subject matters via intricate modes of storytelling. Using drawings, photos, plasticine figures, animation, voice over, sound, and music, he opens up a space for reflection, suggesting the possibility of personal change despite societal restrictions and limitations. About Gernot Wieland: Gernot Wieland (born in 1968 in Horn, Austria) is an artist whose films, drawings, lecture-performances, and installations comment on the idea of human belonging within inherited social, political, and psychological contexts. Wieland’s works have been shown, among others, at the Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen, Salzburger Kunstverein, Kindl – Centre of Contemporary Arts in Berlin, Kunsthaus Graz, the 3rd BIENALSUR – Bienal Internacional de Arte Contemporáneo de America del Sur and at international film festivals such as IFFR – Rotterdam, IndieLisboa, and Videonale. Wieland has received several awards, which most recently include the main prize of the German competition at the 69th International Short Film Festival in Oberhausen and the German Short Film Award. His film work is distributed by argos. Curated by Niels Van Tomme The exhibition is supported by the Art Department of Land Niederösterreich and the Österreichisches Kulturforum Brüssel. Brussel|Tentoonstelling
Iranian astrologer and scientist Omar Khayyam wrote 1000 four-line verses, more than 1000 years ago. Artist Azam Masoumzadeh grew up with his verses and has now created her own, three-dimensional version of the poems. Inspired by ancient Iranian miniature art, her 8-minute VR experience immerses you in a pleasant and relaxing world with 5 different scenes, each one inspired by a different poem. The poems are told in voice-over, in Farsi, English or Dutch. Sometimes they are sad, sometimes full of humor. And although they are centuries old, they touch on timeless themes: love, death, loss, religion, pleasure, happiness, mental wellbeing ... Khayyam’s age-old poetry is more topical than you would expect. This unique and interactive exhibition is set up on our media annex(e) above the reception and is open to anyone from 9 to 99 years old. About Azam Masoumzadeh “If you draw your dreams, they will come true”. Born in Isfahan (Iran), Azam Masoumzadeh discovers a passion for colors and patterns at an early age. At the age of 18, Azam moves away from her hometown to study Textile Design at the University of Teheran. In 2012, she pursues her studies in Belgium. After graduating with a master’s degree in Illustrations & Comics (LUCA) and in Speculative Narration (erg), she also obtains a postgraduate degree in Digital Storytelling (KASK). As a visual & digital storyteller Azam focuses on animation, virtual reality and augmented reality. C0N10UR and 𝚊𝚛𝚐𝚘𝚜 present Small Acts of Violence. You’re invited to walk through a low landscape of broken ceramics vases, moldy collages and brick walls. Wait in the seating area for a caring guide to welcome you into a fabric cocoon, and experience the artist Aay Liparoto’s immersive cinematic virtual reality work at the heart of this exhibition. Do you consent to participate in this loving experience? Do you choose to stay or will you leave? In this exhibition, you cannot just watch passively. You choose the family situations you gaze on, or turn away from. Small Acts of Violence makes you physically feel how the boundaries constantly shift between safe and unsafe, between love and violence. It’s surreal, recognizable, and elusive at the same time. You enter a loving, volatile universe. Stories of intimate violence are not shunned; instead motivations are explored and unpacked. You’re invited to reflect on your own behaviors and assert your own boundaries. On your path in this sensuous, enticing world, you’re surrounded by soft fabrics and sharp edges. Afterwards, you’ll be cared for by the guide, as you’re invited to reflect on your experience in the seating area. Listen to the story your body is telling you. -- What actions do you perform in the name of love? What bad behaviors do you blame on love? Small Acts of Violence makes you aware of the relationship between love and nonconsensual violence. As your body is immersed in a beautiful, sexual, tender, and grotesque environment, you hear overlapping and melting testimonies and observe domestic scenes. A central figure devotedly guides you through a soft bubble of familiar objects, kitschy and colorful. The stories are based on true personal experiences of women, nonbinary and non-cis male perpetrators of domestic violence and self harm and have been collected in Belgium and the United Kingdom. The testimonies, fused with the intimate performances of a fictional family, challenge assumptions about domestic violence. Who is a victim? Who is perpetrator? With this exhibition, Brussels-based artist Aay Liparoto (1987, New Jersey, USA) reminds you of your autonomy. As often in their work, they explore the (social and institutional) boundaries that define our intimate relationships and the power relations that intervene on our daily lives and bodies. Small Acts of Violence wants you to reflect on how you love. It is an invitation to collectively pursue a love free of violence. Curators: Auguste Orts
