Description

From Saturday 13 April to Sunday 1 September 2024, the Bruges Triennial brings
Spaces of Possibility to the streets of the historic city centre and Zeebrugge.
The contemporary art and architectural installations are on view for almost five
whole months. For our fourth edition, we’ve invited twelve international artists
and architects to hold a mirror up to the dormant potential of the ever-changing
city. How can a UNESCO World Heritage City, where preservation is central, deal
with concepts such as change and sustainability? And how can contemporary art
and architecture create a new framework for these issues? Through their artistic
interventions, the artists and architects challenge existing sites, connect
urban areas and search for hidden beauty.
– 13.04 - 01.09.2024
– Bruges city centre and Zeebrugge

The festival "Sorry, not sorry" always takes place in a different neighbourhood
outside the city centre. This time around it takes place in the Ghent
neighbourhood Moscou-Vogelhoek-Flora. At the heart of the festival, you can find
the industrial site of the former weaving and spinning mill De Porre.
Street art in the broadest sense of the word is at the centre of the festival.
As always, the focus is on creative ‘underground’ and ‘out of the box’ art. The
festival puts young artists and organisations in the spotlight and breaks down
the walls between mainstream artists and street artists.
The programme offers a rich variety of visual arts, workshops, info sessions and
educational initiatives.
This exhibition examines the similarities and differences between the purchasing
policy of Jan Hoet, the founder of S.M.A.K. (Municipal Museum of Contemporary
Art), and that of the art collecting couple Roger and Hilda Matthys-Colle. Dr.
Roger Matthys stood at the cradle of the Association for the Museum of
Contemporary Art (V.M.H.K.), which had the ambition to open its own museum and
also purchased art. As president of the association, Matthys had a lot of
influence on the purchasing policy of the V.M.H.K. His private collection
included quite some works that were exhibited in or purchased by the museum.
Both collections are closely intertwined and complement each other.
The Matthys-Colle Collection spans fifty years. In an early stage Roger Matthys
purchased works of art for his private collection as well as for the collection
of the V.M.H.K. In his purchases he did not focus on one specific movement, but
rather created a collection that is representative of all art movements from the
second half of the twentieth century.
In 2020, the S.M.A.K. received 39 works on long-term loan, which now constitute
the basis for this exhibition. Both collections include or at one time included
work by every single artist represented in the exhibition.
The archive exhibition on the upper floor delves deeper into the Matthys-Colle
Collection and the figure of Jan Hoet, while in the room of the association of
the Friends of S.M.A.K. you will discover a selection of works by artists
represented in the Matthys-Colle Collection and exhibited by the V.M.H.K.
In visual arts, collaboration is often secondary to the romanticised idea of
individual artistic genius. Challenging the myth of the solitary artist, this
exhibition explores the unique dynamic of collective creativity and looks at how
it influences artistic production.
In addition to works from the S.M.A.K. collection, created between 1959 and 2021
by art collectives, artist duos or one–off collaborations, this exhibition also
displays works deliberately designed to facilitate other works of art.
Includes works by: Philip Metten, Art & Language, Denicolai & Provoost, Bernd &
Hilla Becher, Jos De Gruyter & Harald Thys, Flexboj & L.A., Narcisse Tordoir &
David Neirings, General Idea, Gilbert & George, HAP, David Hammons & Bruna

Join Harshat and Fitz, two experienced comedians from Berlin with very different
cultural backgrounds. One, a brooding bad boy having grown up in the hustle and
bustle of India. The other, a confused small town country kid from New Zealand
trying to adapt to the manic German way of life. Given these two vastly
different backgrounds we have a mix of two competing comedic styles; dark, edgy
and punchy versus warm, cute and absurd - you guess who is who. Both equally
likable and hilarious. We aim to answer the age old question: is funny black and
white? Or are there shades of grey?

The Comedians:
Fitz is a comedian who has performed across New Zealand and Australia to sell
out audiences. He has brought his comedy to Europe having moved here in 2023.
Fitz's comedic style has been described as warm, punchy and energetic. His shows
are jam packed with absurd commentary on life in Europe and wild stories of
growing up on a farm in New Zealand.
Harshat Grew up between the chaotic concrete jungles and the equally chaotic
countryside of India. Currently, he is trying to forget the Bollywood remix
tunes but still bring a Desi angle to his comedy in Berlin. He derives his wit
from his satirical grandmother and his comedy is based on real life observations
and childhood tales. His funny bone was developed as a coping mechanism for his
chaotic upbringing and is now used to gain the attention he craves.
These two comedians couldn't be more different and have become friends in the
most unlikely circumstances. With this show you are really getting it all,
guaranteed laughs and very contrasting perspectives. Be ready to be left in
stitches saying to yourself "funny really is black and white".

d'effacement.
