Leandro Souza Musa Insistente

A solitary figure wanders around quoting excerpts from songs lyrics, philosophical texts and speeches by important figures in Western culture. An escape movement is activated by cycles of repetition, entanglement and erosion of the words, in a long twilight, atmosphere of a battle between body and culture. How can choreographic practice open up escape routes from the flattening forces of experience?

Musa Insistente is the result of research into escape and choreography, in which the artist investigated language as a way of representing the world in order to observe the exhaustion of the narratives that sustain it. Escape is that muse that insists on inspiring us and showing us that the way out is to face what is in front of us.

Leandro Souza is a Brazilian choreographer living in the Netherlands. Often working in temporary formations, his choreographic work is developed around concepts such as escape, opacity and entanglement. In his productions, Leandro flirts with the word, the voice, the body, movement, objects and various materialities, at a crossroads between practice and theory.
Leandro Souza holds a master's degree from the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP/Brazil) and studied in the Das Choreography program (AHK/Nederland). In 2018, he received the performance award from the São Paulo Association of Art Critics (APCA/Brazil) for his solo Sismos e Volts. Among his works is Eles Fazem Dança Contemporânea and A Gente é Sutil, Vocês são Explícitos.

Une figure solitaire erre, citant des extraits de paroles de chansons, de textes philosophiques et de discours de figures majeures de la culture occidentale. Un mouvement d’échappatoire s’active à travers des cycles de répétition, d’enchevêtrement et d’érosion des mots, dans une longue pénombre, une atmosphère de bataille entre le corps et la culture. Comment la pratique chorégraphique peut-elle ouvrir des voies d’évasion face aux forces uniformisantes de l’expérience ?

Musa Insistente est le fruit d’une recherche sur l’évasion et la chorégraphie, dans laquelle l’artiste explore le langage comme moyen de représenter le monde, observant l’épuisement des récits qui le soutiennent. L’évasion est cette muse insistante, qui nous inspire et nous montre que la sortie réside dans l’affrontement de ce qui se tient devant nous.

Leandro Souza est un chorégraphe brésilien vivant aux Pays-Bas. Travaillant souvent en formations temporaires, son travail chorégraphique s’articule autour de concepts tels que l’évasion, l’opacité et l’enchevêtrement. Dans ses productions, Leandro joue avec la parole, la voix, le corps, le mouvement, les objets et diverses matérialités, à la croisée entre pratique et théorie.

Leandro Souza est titulaire d’un master de l’Université d’État de Campinas (UNICAMP/Brésil) et a étudié au programme Das Choreography (AHK/Pays-Bas). En 2018, il a reçu le prix de la performance de l’Association des critiques d’art de São Paulo (APCA/Brésil) pour son solo Sismos e Volts. Parmi ses œuvres figurent Eles Fazem Dança Contemporânea et A Gente é Sutil, Vocês são Explícitos.

Een eenzame figuur dwaalt rond en citeert fragmenten uit songteksten, filosofische teksten en toespraken van belangrijke figuren uit de westerse cultuur. Een ontsnappingsbeweging wordt geactiveerd door cycli van herhaling, verstrengeling en erosie van de woorden, in een lange schemerige sfeer van een strijd tussen lichaam en cultuur. Hoe kan een choreografische praktijk ontsnappingsroutes openen uit de afvlakkende krachten van ervaring?

Musa Insistente is het resultaat van onderzoek naar ontsnapping en choreografie, waarin de kunstenaar taal onderzocht als een manier om de wereld te representeren, om zo de uitputting van de verhalen die deze ondersteunen te observeren. Ontsnapping is die muze die blijft aandringen, ons blijft inspireren en ons laat zien dat de weg naar buiten erin bestaat om te confronteren wat recht voor ons ligt.

Leandro Souza is een Braziliaanse choreograaf die in Nederland woont. Vaak werkend in tijdelijke samenstellingen ontwikkelt zijn choreografisch werk zich rond concepten zoals ontsnapping, ondoorzichtigheid en verstrengeling. In zijn producties flirt Leandro met het woord, de stem, het lichaam, beweging, objecten en verschillende materialiteiten, op het kruispunt tussen praktijk en theorie.

Leandro Souza behaalde een masterdiploma aan de State University of Campinas (UNICAMP/Brazilië) en studeerde aan het Das Choreography-programma (AHK/Nederland).
